tig foreign shipments , weak cables and bet
ter crop reports wheat was rescued today
by short * , nnd closed but I'.lc lower than
on Saturday. July corn closed 'Sin higher ,
September oats lie higher nnd provisions
without change. More long wheat was
for sale at the opening , nnd no buyers
could be found for It nt that time , within
from 9ic to lo per bu. below the price It
clewed nt on Saturday. The first trnnnuc-
tlons In July were from " : % c to 74'c ,
ngalnut 7Hio at the close of the session on
Saturday. On Saturday June sold .as high
ns 8Ui' , BO that In exactly ten days a do-
cllno of 8c per bu. took place. The addi
tional weakness was due to an early lull-
nation In a Liverpool cablegram , received
before the opening , that the cither export
ing countries of the world had moro than
made up for the falling oft In the shipments
from this side. It quoted Id lower In the
prlco and added the significant remark
"shipments large. " Later In the day , whenever
over 9,000,000 bu. was found to have been
put afloat last week , although this coun
try and Canada hud only contributed 1,700-
000 bu. of the quantity , the weakness with
which business for the day began was In-
tcnHlflcd by the covering purchases of wheat
previously sold short , which were heavy
enough for about half nn hour , becauce of
reaction from around 74-c nnd "I'/to ' to 74c ,
but the Immense amount of the week K
shipments told how they were regarded
by the crowd when about lOiSO o'clock n
drop to 73"iC had taken place. The market -
kot became weaker nnd weaker 118 the ses
sion progressed up to about 12 o'clock , when
the decline was arrested. The reaction
which followed the further decline to 72'ic
was not due to any noticeable buying out-
sldo of what was being taken to cover
shorts. Crop news was not as plentiful a ?
for some days back , but such ns came to
hand showed no general Improvement.
From MIsFourl the tenor of the majority
of the dlppnlchcs was that the damage In
that state had been overstated , placing the
outlook at no more than half a crop , nnd
that It would turn out about 75 per cent.
Fiom Ohio , on the other hand , the extent
of the damage was described In almost
Ecnsatlomil terms , and was mch as to lead
lo a probable destruction of one-half of the
wheat nnd oats crops. Indiana and Illinois
appeared to have ceased mentioning their
damage , but the trade for the most part
accepts the fact that the most extensive
harm to wheat has appeared In those two
states and In Kansas. The visible supply
decreased 2,022000 bu. , and the total Is now
down to 47,717,000 bu. , compared with C7.-
105,000 bu. In 1S9I , and CC.375.000 bu. at the
conespondlng time In 1S93 , The northwest
ern receipts were 235 cars , compared with
272 cars a. year ago. Atlantic port clear
ances since last reported on Saturday were
pqual In wheat and flour to only 1G3.000 bu.
One Item of the day's news , which helped
the bears , was a cablegram from Odessa ,
saying that the nusslan grain crops
promised to repent the heavy yields of 18'.O ,
rye being especially good. The price began
to Improve from 12 o'clock , and trading
nt 7lc for July was In progress within a
few minutes of the close , the market end
ing at 73c.
The corn market was under n spell of
weakness at the opening , which lasted till
the agony was parsed In wheat. The feelIng -
Ing In corn did not nt any time approach
the heaviness of that In wheat , and after
the receipts estimated for tomorrow became
known as only IfiO earn , Instead of weak
ness , there ensued n feeling of confidence.
The receipts were 174 cars , nnd 11,000 bu.
by canal. The visible supply decreased
797,000 bu. , against 411,000 bu. decrease n
year ago. The total In sight now Is 10,785-
000 bu. , compared with 7,00:1,000 : bu. at the
corresponding time last year. Argentine
shipped 587,000 bu. to Kuropo last week , but
the amount on ocean passage now Is 80,100
bu. less than It was last week. July corn
opened at 4S'iiC , compared with 48iic at the
close on Saturday. The tendency after the
first few minutes was toward Improvement
nnd after following wheat for nn hour or so
It struck out for itself and landed at 'ID c.
A very nctlve market was reported for
oats. The early session was remarkable
for the weakness created by free selling by
New York , and also generous offerings of
long stuff. Later on the buying become
general , and from that time on n firm mar
ket was noted. I'rlces rallied and closed
steady for July , nnd higher for September.
September ranged from 27c to 28c , clos
ing nt 2SJc.
The provision market was nffected for an
hour after the opening by the various
changes In wheat , but later on In the day
It took corn for Its leader and recovered n
small decline made nt the start , leaving off
firm without change from Saturday's clos
ing rates. Hog receipts were 23,000 head.

strikers at the United Salt works went to
the plant late last night armed with clubs
and compelled those at work to quit. The
strikers demand an Increase In wages of 60
cents per day , One hundred and llfty men
reported for duty this morning , but the com
pany decided not to attempt to start up nt
present. The works are now being guarded
by the police , and any attempt to put new
men to work \ \ 111 likely causu serious trou
ble.

Cotton press , situated nt the come.4 of South
Peters street nnd Terpsichore streets was
ho Gccno of a tcrrlhlo explosion today
which resulted lu ono man being killed and
a dozen wounded and seven or eight missing ,
The Union press Is ono ot the largest
ircsBcs In the city and was operated by the
Inn of Frankcnbush & IlorlanJ , the struc
ture covering nearly the cutlro square run-
ilng from South Peters street to S. N. W.
Lovco streets. Its compress opens on
Terpsichore street and tncro always nro
a dozen or moro men around the huge com
press when It Is at work. Tho. boiler room
s near the compress nnd It was owing to
Its close proximity that so many fatalities
resulted.
At the time of the explosion the boilers
were being tested by W. J. Hammond of
Kosclusco , Miss. , representing tlio firm of
Kelly , Blank & Co. Ono of the boilers sud
denly exploded without warning and In an
instant thcro was n volume of hot water
ejected on nil sides. The walls around
the boiler room caved In and there men
who had escaped the water. It Is believed ,
were burled In the rutus. Mr. Penroso was
standing within ten feet of the boiler at the
tlmo and he was struck by n brick .and also
received the full stream of boiling water In
the face. Ho was horribly burned , and
when picked up a few minutes later was
Tound to bo dead.
Mr. Frankcnbush was near Mr. Penrose
and was struck by the bricks and water.

Workmen arc now busy delving Into th&
ruins , as It Is known that there are at least
half a dozen people , mostly laborers , burled
beneath them. Mr. Penroso was a prom
inent citizen. Ho was a part owner of the
compress , nnd was a member of the school
board. Thep rcss Is demolished ; the walls
of the cotton yard were torn tn pieces for
nearly a square.

canal , which oonnccts the Hudson liver with
Long Island sound , was formally opened this
afternoon with a monster aquatic and land
parade , In which the United States army
and navy , the state militia and naval reserve -
servo , the city police and flro departments
and numerous civic bodies were repre
sented.
The parade was watched by CO.OOO or more
people stationed along the line of march and
on the banks of the canal. The ceremony
of pouring two barrels of water from the
great lakes Into the canal symbolizing the
union of the lakes with the sound wa : ac
companied by the firing of cannon by the
United States.crulsers Atlanta and Cincinnati.
Among the visitors were Governor Coflln of
West Virginia , Governor Wertz of New Jer

LOUISDURG , Cape Breton , June 17. Under
the auspices of the Society of the Colonial
Wars ancient Loulsburg Is today engaged In
celebrating the 150th anniversary of the
capture by New England troops of what was
one of the most formidable fortresses In
America. The army , which , after a siege of
nearly seven weeks , forced the French to sur
render the stronghold which cost over $5,000-
000 , was mainly made up of men from
Massachusetts , New Hamshlre and Connecti
cut , but New York , New Jersey , Pennsyl
vania and Vermont and Rhode Island con
tributed to the contest by furnishing muni
tions of war and supplies , and all of these
states were well represented by the delega
tion of members of the Society of Colonial
Wars , which arrived here on a special train
today. The town is gaily decorated , the
vessels in the harbor are bedecked with
bright flowers and thousands of visitors that
throng the streets contribute to make the
holiday the liveliest In years. The monument
ment to commemorate the capture ot the
fortress will be dedicated this afternoon.
