Tliurston nines' armory , gaylj- decorated
ii honor of the event , was filled last even-
MB with a representative convention of
Nebraska l > uslness mcn , coniixisltig the State
'harmaccutlcal association , wlilcli U now
lolJliiK Its annual nsscmblago In this city.
The convention wan called to order nt 8
'clock by President Henry R. Gerlng of
lattsmottth. Hcv. S. Wright Ilutler Invoked
Ivlno blessing oil the delegates. Mayor
leinls delivered an address of welcome , In
vhlch ho extended the hand and heart of
Omaha and cordially greeted the visitors In
> chalf cf the city. M. K. Schultz was on
ho program 'for a response , but was de-
alned at Lincoln and was thus unavold-
bly absent. President Qerlng briefly
oiccd the appreciation of the delegates for
he kindly sentiment expressed by the
mayor.
Uov. S , Wright Ilutler made a witty
speech , during which ho kept his listeners
n convulsions ot laughter. Ho said , among
other things , that ho welcomed them to
) malia In behalf of the people whom they
md left behind , as It would gtvo those
joople at home , who were sick , a chance
o get well.
The reading- the minutes of the previous
neetlng was dispensed with. The feature
of the evening , the annual address of Prcs
dent Goring , followed. H was :
PRESIDENT GIOUING'3 AUDHI3SS.
Ladles iiml Gentlemen , fellow Plitirmn
Msts mid Members of the Nebraska State
Pharmaceutical Association : It becomes
my duty as president of thH association to
glvo you n review of the work nnd progress
of the * past year , but to begin , I will say
that I did not think there was ns much to
Io nnd so much to do that I was unable
to do.
All of the committees appointed linvp
done their work , and done It well and with
a will , as their reports will show. They
have awakened nn Interest In this meetIng -
Ing , In spite of the very bard time * , anil
there will be n well attended meeting nnd
no lark of Interesting discussions.
The tpeclal committee to whom wa1 ? referred -
ferred the question of securing legislative
enactment on a poison law drafted houst >
roll No. 2C2. This bill was rcforrod to the
legislative committee for Its approval , and ,
being approved , was Introduced In the house
of representatives by Hon. W. D. Hnlli-r
of Hlalr , Who made a great effort to have
the bill passed , but before It came tip" " for
fliml action a sifting committee was ap
pointed , to whom all bills not yet pa Hed by
the legislature were referred , and H was
thus that It was lost. House roll No. 531
niol the same fate.
The most Important qtir-stlon brought up
during the year Is the tax on alcohol or
free alcohol , ns under the Wilson tariff bill ,
and I hope you will thoroughly discuss this
all Important question.
ASSOCIATION IS GUOWING.
While times liavo been very hard during
the past year , llnanclal failures nmon ?
druggists have been few , comparatively
speaking , and the association has made
riipld progress In getting new members ,
thanks to the committee on membetshlp
for Its very thorough work , which 1ms made
the Nebraska State Pharmaceutical asso
ciation rank fifth In point of numbers , and
nearly first In percentage of membership ,
ns compared with the 'population , with all
the states , and this alone should make us
feel proud of our association.
The report of the trade Interests commit
tee and the committee on pharmacy and
queries have prepared n splendid list of
questions , which can bo discussed with
prollt and good results for the association.
If It were not borrowing from the work of
another , I would recommend , ns did Presi
dents Koenlgstoln nnd Sherman , "that
cverj' proprietor of n drug store should be
a registered pharmacist. "
I would also recommend that our associa
tion be Incorporated and Its name changed
from Nebraska State Pharmaceutical asso
ciation to Nebraska Pharmaceutical asso
ciation.
Another verv Important question Is the
establishing of n college of pharmacy In
the state , either Independent or In connec
tion with the State university.
Two very Important publications have
been issued by the Department of Agricul
ture. One Is a compilation of alT'of phar
macy , poison and drug laus of the United
States under the direction of Mr. H. W.
Wiley , chief chemist of the depart
ment ; the other is a report by Special Agent
Wcdderburn on food and drug adultera
tions in the United States , both of which
can be obtained by making a request of
lion J. Sterling Morton , secretary of agri
culture , Washington , D. C.
The llnanclal condition of our association
Is a source of great prldo to the olllcers of
the association , and show. how faithful and
diligent have been the efforts of the secre
tary and treasurer to meet all llnanclal lia
bilities and FtiH have n balance on hand ,
with no outstanding Indebtedness.
But one of the greatest of all great things
ot our association Is the splendid attend
ance of the Indies , whose radiant faces make
us feel happier and better.
The American Pharmaceutical association
meets In Denver. August II , 1893 , and It
would be well If Nebraska were represented
not only by the delegates , but by an many
members as can go.
DUATHS DUKING TUB YHAIt.
Pharmacy , in common with the entire
sclentlllc world , has been called upon to
mourn the deaths of two of her great sons
during the last year. Herman von Helm-
hotz , who passed to the great beyond Sep
tember 8 , 1S91 , at the ripe ago of 72 years ,
and Frledrlch August Muckiger , who died
December 11 , 1S3I , nt the advanced ape of
Cfl years. The memories of both will live
and bo honored for years to come. Hut
the saddest deaths are those of our own
rank , and those whom we have known per
sonally ; they were Mr. CV K. Goodman of
Omaha , January 11 , 189."i , and O. K. John
son of PlattJtnoutli. March 25 , 1833. and
Dr. 1C. it. Parks of Omaha , Juno 1 , 1S35.
All joined the association In 183' ' .
Mr. C. I' , Goodman was our vice presi
dent In 18S.1-4 , and our president In 1889-90 ,
and also a member of many of Its Im
portant committees , and did much for the
advancement of the association. Ho was
the first member of the same from this
state and ono of the oldest druirclsts of the
state , and was honored by the association
and lo\ed by Its members ,
Dr. H. M. Parks was our president In
1SS2-3 , also In 188.1 nnd 1891 , and was to have
read a paper before this convention , but the
angel of death has taken him to a higher
meeting.
In closing , let me thank each and everyone
ono of you for your kind attention nnd earn
est endeavor to assist In. making this a
most successful meeting.
Nonleu'fl orchestra was stationed In the
balcony and gave an excellent musical pro
gram.
HAD A SPELLING SCHOOL.
This was followed by a druggists' spelling
school , under the supervision of Mrs. Julia
Hooblor. The words were medical Jaw
breakers , and In thirty minutes there were
only three survivors of the contest on the
floor. The winners and prizes were as fol
lows : First prize , Seymour cash register ,
won by J H. Schmidt of Omaha ; second
prize , ladles' pearl handled 'fan , won by F.
Martin Mueller of Omaha ; third prize , one
Perfection prescription file and cabinet , won
by 0. II. Worth of Omaha.
The convention took a recess until this
morning. Today's order of business wll

CHRONICLES
HEWITT
CHAPTER II.
( Copyright. IS1 * ! , by the Author )
At a sign from Hewitt the loaf was re
moved. Then Hewitt pulled the small table
closer to the Frenchman , nnd- pushed the
pen and the sheets of paper toward him.
The maneuver had Its results. The man
looked up and. down the room vacantly
once or twice , and then began to turn the
paper over. From that he went to dipping
the pen in the Ink pot , and presently ho
was scribbling at random on the loose
sheets , Hewitt affected to leave him en
tirely alone , nnd seemed to bo absorbed
In a contemplation of a photograph of a
police division braes band hanging on the
wall , but he saw every scratch the man
made.
At first there was nothing but meaning
less scrawls and attempted words. Then
rough sketches appeared of a man's head ,
a chair , or what not. On Iho mantel piece
stood a small clock , apparently a sort of
humble presentation piece , the body of the
clock being set In a horseshoe frame , with
crossed whips behind It. After a tlmo the
Frenchman's eyes fell on this , and ho
began a rude sketch of It. That
ho relinquished and went on with
other random sketches and scrlbbllngs
'Good day , " Hewitt said pleasantly to the
younr ? man.
on the same piece of paper , sketching nnd
scribbling over the sketcMes In a half mo-
chanlcal bert of way , as of one who trifles
with a pen during a brown study. UeglnnlriR
at the top of the left-hand corner , ho traveled
round It till he arrived at the left-hand bottom
tom corner. Then , dashing his pen hastily
across his last sketch , he dropped II , and with
great shudder turned away again , and Slid
lis face by the fireplace.
Hewitt turned at once and seized the
papers on the table. He stuffed them all Into
Ills coat pocket , with the exception of the
last , which the man had bean encaged on ,
and t'als , a facblmlle of which Is subjoined ,
he studied earnestly for several minutes.
"Well ! " the Inspector said , "Not much
to bo got out of him , Is there ? The doctoi
will bo sending for him presently. "
"I fancy , " said Hewitt , "that this ma )
turn out a very Important case. Possibly
qulto possibly I have not guessed correctly
and so I won't tell you anything of It till
I know a little more. But what I want
now Is a messenger. Can I senJ somebody
at once In a cab to my friend Mutt at his
chambers ? "
"Certainly ; I'll find somebody. Wont to
write a note ? "
Hewitt wrote and dispatched a note which
reached mo In less than ten minutes. Then
he asked the Inspector : "Have you searched
the Frenchman ? "
"Oh , yes ; we went all over him when wo
found ho couldn't explain himself , to see If
wo could trace his friends or his address.
Ha didn't seem to mind , but' there wasn t
a single thing In his pocket not a single
thing , barring a rag of a pocket handker
chief with no marking on It. "
"You noticed that somebody had stolen
his watch , I suppose ? "
"Well , ho hadn't got one. "
"Hut he had ono of those little vertical
buttonholes In his waistcoat , used to fasten

a wotchguard to , and It was much worn
and frayed. So that ho must be In the
habit of carrying a watch , and It Is gone. "
"Yes , and everything else , too , eh ? Looks
like robbery. He's had a knock or two In
the face notice that ? "
"I saw the bruises and the cut , of course ;
and his collar has been broken away with
the back button somebody has taken him
by the collar or throat. Was ho wearing a
hat when ho was found ? "
"No. "
"That would Imply that ho had only just
left a house. What street was ho found
In ? "
"Henry street , a llttlo off Golden square.
Low street , you know. "
"Did the constable notice a door open
near by ? "
The Inspector shook his head , "Half the
doors tn the street arc open , " ho said ;
"pretty nearly all day. "
"Ah , then there's nothing In that. 1
don't think he lives there ; by the bye , I
fancy he comes from more tn the Seven
Dials or Drury Lane direction. Did you
notice anything about the man that gave
you a clue to his occupation , or , at any
rate , to his habits ? "
"Can't say I did. "
"Well , Just take a look ttl the back ol
his coat before he goes away Just over the
loins. Good day. "
As I have said , Hewitt's messenger was
quick. I happened to be In , having lately
returned from a latlsh lunch when he ar
rived with this note :
"My Dear II. : I meant to lunch with you
today , but have been kept. I expect you
arc Idle this afternoon and I have a case that
will Interest you perhaps be useful to you
from a Journalistic point of view. If you
care to see anything ot It , cab away at once
to FlUroy square , south tide , whore I'll meet
you. I will wait no later than 3:30. : Yours ,
"M , H. "
I had scarce a quarter ot an hour , co I
seized my hat and left my chambers at once
As It happened , my cab and Hewitt's burst
Into Fltzroy from oppcaltc aides almost at
the tame moment , io that we lout no time.
"Come , " tald Howtt | , taking my arm and
marching mo off , "we are going to look for

umall attention to the rtntilcs themselves ,
ind looked sharply about him , with his gaze
n the air.
"I know thl part of London pretty well. "
Hewitt observed , "and I con only rcmem-
lirir ono other range of stabling near by ; wo
must try that. As n matter ot fact , I'm
coming here on llttlo more than conjecture.
ho"gh I shall be surprised If the o Isn't ome-

"I have heard of It , of course , though I
can't say I remember over knowing of a

"I have seen ono today very curious
case. The man's a Frenchman , discovered

only thing he can say that has any mean *

knowing what ho Is saying. And ho can't

scrawls , together with another thing or

sketches and explain things geniTally ;
there's no time now , and I may want your
help for a bit. In which case Ignoranoo
may prevent you spoiling things , you clumsy
rulllan. Hullo ! here we are , I think. "
Wo bad stopped nt the end of another
stable yard , rather dirtier than the first.
The stables were sound but Inelegant sheds ,
and ono or two appeared to be devoted .to
other purposes , having low chimneys , on
ono of which an old basket was raklshly
set by way of conl. Ilcsldo the entrance a
wornout old board was nailed with the
legend. "Stabling to Let , " In letters for
merly white , on n ground formerly black ,
"Come , " said Hewitt , "we'll explore. "
We picked our way over the grassy cob
blestones and looked about us. On the left
was the wall Inclosing certain back yards ,
and on the right the stables. Two doom
In the middle of these were open , and n
butcher's young man , who , with his shiny
bullet head , would have been known for a
butcher's young man anywhere , was wiping
over the new-washed wheel of a smart
butcher's call.
"Good day , " Hewitt said pleasantly to the
young man. " 1 notice thcro'n some stabling
to let here. Now whore should I Inquire
about It ? "
"Jones , Whltfleld street , " the young man
answered , giving tha wheel a final spin.
"Hut there's only ono little place to lot now ,
I think , and It ain't very grand. "
'
"Oh. which Is that ? "
"Next but one to the street there. A

"Ah , that's a pity. Wo'ro not particular.
but want something big enough , and wo

we might make arrangements with some
body here who has a stable. '
The young man shook hU head. "I
shouldn't think so , " ho said doubtfully ;
they're mostly shop people as wants all
the room themselves. My guv'nor couldn't
do nothlnk , 1 know. These 'ere two stables
ain't scarcely enough for all 'o wants as It
Is , Then there's llarkctt , the green grocer
'ere , next door. That ain't no good. Then
next to that there's the llttlo place as Is to
let , and at the end there's Grilllth's at the
butter shop. "
"And those the other way ? "
"Well , this 'ere llrst one's Curtis' . Euston

Hewitt turned thoughtfully away.
"Thanks , " he bald. "I suppose wo can't
