CHICAGO , Mny 1C. Wheat shorts were
ecu red today by n deadly combination of
chinch bugs , hesslan Ily nnd frost damage
reports , and July closed lo higher. July
corn closed } Jc higher , July outs Vic higher
and July pork 12'c ' higher.
Wheat opened under the Influence of very
General rain In ths western belt nnd lower
cables , but very noon changed Its tone. A
report Issued by B. M. Thomnn , giving the
amount of wheat In farmers' hands on May
1 at 87COCOO bu. , was an clement Inducing
the traders to sell at the opening , but the
effect of that was aulckly swallowed , along
with the lower cables , by the reports of InJury -
Jury to wheat by the ravages of hesslan
Hies , chinch bugs and frost. The reports
were In many Instances accompanied by
buying orders. July wheat sold for a few
minutes after the opening at from Olc up
to C5'ic , but soon began to creep upward
until It readied 65V4o. There was an ani
mated struggle around the last named price ,
but the bulls soon began to work ahead ,
and , that price being passed , the advance of
another cent to O6',4o was easy , quick , but
excited. The ordinary market news , apart
from the crop damage , was bearish. The
weather , notwithstanding what was heard
from the country , was considered here to
be favorable. Liverpool was quoted > , i
lower ; Paris 10 centimes higher for May
Hour , 25 centimes lower for later deliveries ,
10 centimes lower for May wheat and un
changed for later months , nnd llerlln from
114 marks to 1 % marks lower. The Mlnne-
apollH anil Dultith receipts were 108 curs ,
against 176 n year ago. Primary market
receipts were heavier than on the corresponding
spending day last year , amounting to 253.000
bu. , compared with 14G.OUO bu. a year ago.
The export clearances of wheat and Hour
from the Atlantic seaboard amounted to
SOO.OUO bu , , half of It In wheat. The price ,
after getting to 66V4c , sold bock to C5 ! c ,
but recovered again to G6 * c. where It was
about fifteen minutes from the close , with
the Bhorts apparently rather anxious. The
price , after several quick changes , was CGHc
ut the close.
Corn was In demand and ruled higher on
the average after a rather easy opening.
July , which closed yesterday ut DOftc , start
ed at from that to W ic. Not much , how
ever , changed hands at the latter price.
The fluctuations soon came under the influ
ence of the strong wheat market , and to
that was added the taking of 201,000 bu.
lor direct export from here In the course pf
the day. The price rose to GlKc. reacted to
from. GlHc to 51Vic , and at the close was
at Us highest point from 51c to CIVic. Ite-
celpts' today were 233 cars , and 355 are esti
mated for tomorrow. Favorable weather Is
Generally reported for planted corn , and en
larged deliveries from farmers. Two prom
inent local llrms , who were supposed to be
short , bought freely. . . . .
Oats were quiet and the strength devel
oped was In sympathy with wheat and corn.
July opened lie lower at 27c. sold from
27ic to 28c and closed at 28J4c.
In the provision market receipts of 38,000
hogs today and estimates for 32,000 tomor
row opened It weak , and a recovery which
took place later was ascribed to big buying
by brokers for Cudahy & Co. The advance
was confined to pork , which , compared
with yesterday's prices , Is IZVbc higher ; lard
Is 5c lower and ribs unchanged.
Lake and rail lines reduced rates on corn
to Buffalo to lo and took loads for several
boats at that llgure. Charters for Kings
ton for corn , 2Hc.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat ,
23 cars ; corn , 353 cars ; oats , 310 cars ; hogs ,

The sum total of the dealings In bonds
today shows a considerable decrease from
the aggregate Bales of the past few days.
The decrenne Is largely due to the cessation
of the foreign buying , which had the effect
of keeping local purchasers also out of
the market. The trading was largely con
fined to the speculative issues , which were
undur pressure throughout. In the Inactive
mortgages some material advances were
recorded. The sales aggregated $2,866.000.

WEDNESDAY , Mny 15.
There was the usual light run of cattle
oilay , but fair receipts of hogs and sheep.
The total , however , only footed Up ninety-
'our cars. Cattle receipts for the three
days , ns compared with receipts the first
lalf of last week , show a decrease of over
i.OOO head , while hogs have Increased 4,300
head nnd sheep 1,300 Head.
Of the twenty-nine fresh loads of cattle
on sale today , eight loads , or nearly 2i ) )
lead , were Texas cattle that Cudahy bought
yesterday nt Kansas City , so that offerings
today were not much over 400 head. The
quality of the offerings was Just fair. There
was nothing strictly cnotce on sale , while
on the other hand there was very little that
was strictly poor. The market was one of
those very mean affairs where receipts are
light , but the demand lighter. There was
no urgent demand from any quarter , nnd It
ook the hardest kind of work on the part of
sellcis to realize within 10c of Tuesday's
irlces , while the average run of cattle sold
all of 23o to 40c lower than a week ago.
Had markets east was generally given OH
: he reason for the bad market here , nnd In
the absence of a better excuse that had to
? o. The top was $3 for n load of choice 1,351-
b. beeves , but very good fat and smooth
,200-lb. steers sold for $1.70. Dressed beef
men bought about all the cattle finally , but
t took nil day.
The market for cow stuff was active and
strong. Supplies have been too light and
the demand too good to admit of much de
cline on this class of stock. The market
for veal calves continues In good shape
with prices strong1. Hough stock of all
clnds , however , was slow sale , nnd rather
veak than otherwise. In stockers and feed
ers there was practically nothing doing. The
few cattle olfered sold readily at good
trong prices , the demand being considerably
n excess of the supply. Good to choice
'eedsrs ore quotable at from 73.35 to $1 , faire
o good nt from J3 to J3.35 and common
trades from $3 down. Representative sales :

ST. PAUL , May 16. Judge Sanborn of
the United States circuit court today handed
down his decision In the receivership con
troversy of the Union I'.iclflc and Oicgon
Short Line railways. U Is practically a vic
tory for the petitioners for the appointment
of a separate receiver for the Short Line.
If the conditions arc met It I ? conceded that
the recelvtrs will be John M. Kgan , who has
already been appointed by Judge Gilbert at
Portland , Ore. The matter came up ten days
ago , the American Loan and Trust company
of Boston , holders of the second mortgage of
$10,893,000 , moving for n separate receiver
ship. The Union 1'aclflc opposed the motion.
The action proposed hero Is the same as
had already been taken In Judge Gilbert's
court as applied to the proprty In his cir
cuit. Under Judge Sanborn's order the re
ceivers are directed to prepare a statement of
monies In their hands applicable to paying
Interest on the first mortgage against the
Oregon Short Line. Thu order further pro
vides for a hearing , at which will be deter
mined the amount which will be necessary to
pay Into court to satisfy the- Interest of the
mortgage , and , In case such amount Is paid ,
to arrange for the form of order for the
transfer of the property to the receiver ap
pointed under this last bill of the second
mortgage. The petitioner had agreed to pay
this Interest In CJEO a separate receiver sfcouM
be granted , so theseparatc receivership seems
assured. As John ( M. Kgan has been ap
pointed for part of the road by Judge Gil
bert , and his appointment > * desired by the
petitioners , he seems assured as receiver
for the entire Oregon Short Line.

The trip of General Manager George W.

to be In connection with the desire of the

Into Butte , Mont. , from the present junction
of the road at Billings. Mr. Holdrege goes

such an arrangement as indicated , with the
