THE Oai'AH A DAILY 1)18101 ) BUND AY , MAY 12 , 1805 , CONDITION OF OMAHA'S ' TRADE in a Jobbing Way Roraalns Prac tically Unobangodi PROSPECTS BRIGHTER IN MOST LINES Price * ( Irnnrnlljr Firm with n Timdrncr l Ailrnnce nn Many ICIndu of Ma'rchnn- Ul c JlntmfnoturorA * Hainan Pro duce mill l''rnlt Mutters , Iluslness conditions during the past six < lays have reflected little or no change from these which prevailed last week. Throughout the country the continuance of favorable weather hna Invigorated the de mand of retailers , and a fairly large busi ness bus lieen done on the part of con sumers. IlounteoUB rnlns. where they were moxt needed , have fallen und Imparted life to the growing crops. Agricultural labor has been nnd Is well employed and every thing Is activity In the country. There appears to be n little strip of country - try down In the southwestern part of the stata where there has not been cmough moisture to satisfy the farmers , but aside from that the report arc all favorable. Jobbers generally report n fair business that la fully equal to expectations llusl- ness In Iowa Is especially improved and very liberal orders are being received from that territory. To go more Into detail It may be said that the hardware business Is reported In fully ns good condition as a week ago , though It was anticipated that there would be a little lull In the demand , due to the fact that the farmers wou'.d be naturally very busy In the fields There Is n stronger feeflng In the market nnd the llrmne s Is likely to be Increased by the hardening In the value of metals and base material gen erally. The dry goods trade has been of about the h.une general character as a week ugo with fevy changes worthy of note. At manufacturing centers the labor question has been tn some Instances a dlslurblng factor , but It Is claimed th.U the total number of the disaffected nnd unemplo > ed la lesa than usual nt this season of the year. At eastern points a quiet trndo has micceeded the large dealings of a short time back , at the same time It is claimed that there Is no reason why there should be nny changes In value developed be cause of the quiet. As noted a week ago the shoe business , considering nil things , Is of a fairly sat isfactory character The volume of sales Is fully up to what might reasonably be ex pected and no one In the trade Is disposed to complain. The most Interesting feature Is the stiff advance In prices The market con hardly be said to have as yet assumed stable conditions. Many manufacturers were so fully supplied with materials be fore the prices on them advanced that they were not compelled to ndvnnee prlcfs on the finished product ns rapidly as the raw material advanced On Ibis account a good deal of stock has been sold at prices that would have Involved a loss had they been ba cd on the present prices of Rather A good many manufacturers , however , have closed uiouj.li contiact.s to use up what I en 111 or they had on hand nnd are now forced to demand prices HUlllcient to cover the In creased test of manufacture It la flguied that the Increased cost of production Is equivalent to lOftSOc per pair A good many manufacturers have old so many Hhoes that they are indifferent about selling any more unless thc > can get all the advance. Until Pole leathet advanced the Increased price of shoes was restricted to oil grain , pebble anil Move grain , buff , 1" split and kip , but sole leather has no ap preciated that all kinds of shoes are now Belling at higher prices Some Idea of the revival In the shoe trade may be gained from the fact that the shoe shipments from the Unverhlll , Mass , fac tories last week v\ere ahead of all previous records and reached n mark never b'fore attained In the shoe business of that city. Just 11.7& . cases were sent out from that city during ihe sK days , excesdlng the largest previous lecord by 802 cases. 'Ihe United States Leather company con tinues to boom the leather maiket and pi ices are being forced up as rapidly as possible. During the pist week the com pany announced the pi Ice of sole leather as advanced to 33 cebtn per pound , the pilco before the bulge- having been JO cents per pound. There has been a good deal of com plaint among manufacturers that the prlc" was being pilt up faster than the circum stances would warrant. 1"Y Omaha's wholesale giocery business has held up to the pace established a week or ten days ago and has been quite satisfac tory 'Iho nnlvnl on the market .of new- vegetables iilways makes ome difference with thu trade In certain lines , but no more so this season than usual. It Is a fact , how ever , that berries and vegetables are earlier this season than customary , so that they have become a factor In trade sooner than usual. ANOTHCU KVIDHN'CU. Notwithstanding the fact that the Agri cultural department of the United State' government questioned the reported short- nge of cattle , the tendency of the market on a mimb r of products would seem tc verify thu statements of cattlemen. At noted above , It has been possible to advance leather enormouslj and now comes the Statement that canned meats nre In llghl supply nnd on the up grade The packer * Y have claimed that the supply of cattle milt. able for canning purposes has been shorl b ever since Inu winter and the evidence h strong that much lesa than the us > ua nmount of beef has been packed In cans It Is claimed that .some paclceiH uro unubl ; to nil orders In full and jobbers complalr that they cannot secure coined b'ef as rnpldly as they deslro Ihe advance maili In prices a short time ago Is bMng strlctlj adhered to und warning is given that quo tatlons will again be raised very shortly. 1'llODUCi : AND FHU1T. The wholesale fruit merchants of the cltj nre Just now considering the question 01 having a fruit auction the coming sum mer. The tclogrnm sent out from Chicago Friday night that the Hurllngton , through a circular , announcing that It would piy $5 to ngcnta on secured westbound business between Chicago cage nnd Colorado common points , had com menced to piny harrl karl with rate ? , scorns , Iti the light of the best Information , to be a Mnnchauscn ] ol < o Mr A II. Smith , as sistant general passenger agent of the I ) , & M , said In reply to a question "NYo are living absolutely up to tlio agreement of the Western Lines Passenger association. All commissions nro authurbcd by Chairman Caldvvcll. Ileyond these the Hurllngton has nothing \vhatover to do with the payment of commissions. The Idea of a general pas senger agent Issuing a circular raising com missions is n little the best thing I have read In a lung time The Darlington Is not paying commissions cither cast or west , ex cept those authorised under the agreement , and therefore I am constrained tu believe some newspaper man In Chicago Is being misled" . At Union Pacific headquarters the circular alleged to have been Issued by theHurllng ton people was scouted un the theory that a general pasicngei agent was nnt in the habit of Riving such manipulation away to other lines In such a public manner. Hates will bo restored May 19 , unles.3 something at present ttnforsecn should ariseto prevent tha advance. It wus learned yesterday at headquar ters that the Hiirllngton had filed a notice with Chairman Kljmi of the Colorado associ ation that It would withdraw from that or ganization Mny 15. No reason was as signed for this action , There are mere , however , who believe that the Uurllngtoii takes this step in order to force the Union Pacific Into an Ironclad agreement on west- tern passenger association business. Another theory is that it Is In the Interest of economy , and notwithstanding Its severance ot rela tionship with tlio nssoclntlcn , It will still agree to any reduced excursion rates that the lines remaining in the association may make. Mr. Smith of the passenger department , stated that the action was taken bccauso It had no Interest In Colorado whatever , and that It was cnly a useless expenditure , of money , without corresponding returns. Ho disavowed any Intention to pieclpltato matlera by this action , vvhlc'u , lie bald , was purely In the Interest of economy. . lust IttiiiniiiK < in ihu I'cnniylvnnln , The olllclal report of the performance of the special newspaper train between Phila delphia and Atlantic City Sunday , April 21 , shows some wonderful bursts ot speed.
