Hewitt rang and sent for a copy of each
morning paper of the previous day. Then lie
took from a large wardrobe cupboard a decent
but well-worn and rather roughened Inll luit.
Also a coat a little worn and shiny on the
collar. Ho exchanged the-so for his own hat
and coat , and then substituted an old ncckle ;
for his own clean whlto one , and Incased his
legs In mud-spot ted leggings. This done , ho
produced a very largo and thick pocketbook ,
fas'ened by a broad , elastic band , and said ,
Well , what do you think of this ? Will it

In tl.e Btreot , and It had a natty little coach
house Just visible up the sldo entrance.
There were red blinds hung with heavy lace
In thi ? front windows , and behind ono of these
blinds Hewitt was able to catch the glint of
a heavy gas chancellor.
He stepped brltkly up the front steps and
knocked wharply at the door. "Mr. Merston ? " '
he njked , pocketbook In hand , when a neat
parlor maid opened the door.
"Yes. "
"Ah" Hewitt stepped Into the halt and
pulled ofr his hat "It's only the meter.
There's been a deal of gas running away

TUB girl hesitated. "I'll I'll ask master , "
she ald.
"Very well. I don't want to take It away ,
you know only to give It a tap or two , and
o on. "
. Hewitt followed the girl to the basement ,
apparently looking straight before him , but
In reality taking In every detail of the place
The gas meter was In a very large lumber
cupboard under the kitchen stairs. The girl
opened the door and lit the candle. The
meter stood en the floor , which was littered
with hampers nnd beta and odd sheet * of
brown paper. Dut n tiling that at once ar
rested Hewitt's attention was a garment of
some sort of bright blue cloth , with largo
brass buttons , which was lying In a tumbled
heap In a corner , and appeared to be the only
thing In the- place that wa > not covered with
dust , Ncverlliplesi Hewitt tosk no apparent
notice of It , but stooped down and solemnly
tapped the meter three limes with hli pencil
and listened with great gravity , placing hU
ear on the top. Then he shook MB head
Bnd tapped again , At length he si'di "It's
a bit doubtful. I'll Just get you to light tha
gas In the Ultchen a moment. Keep your
hand to the-burner , and \vlun I call out shut

The girl turned and entered ( lie kitchen ,
and Hewitt Immediately seized the blue coat
for a coat It waa. It had a dull red piping

in the teams and was of Iho swallow-tall paU
tern-M livery coat , In fact lie held It &
moment before him , examining Its pattern
and color , and then rolled It up and lluns It
again Into the earner.
night ! ' he called to the servant. "Shut
off ! "
The girl emerged fronv the kitchen as h
left the cupbotrd. "Well , " she asked , "ar
you satlsllod now ? "
"Quito satlsfli'd , thank you. " Hewitt re
plied.
"U It all right ? " she continued , Jerking
her hand toward the cupboard.
"Well , no , it Isn't ; there's something
wrong1 there , and I'm glad ) I came. You cm
tell Mr. Mcrstim , If > ou like , that I expect
his gas bill will be a , good deal less next
quarter. " And there was a suspicion , ot
chuckb In llDultt's voice as he crossed the
hall to leave. For a gas Inspector Is pleased
when he finds at length what he has been
searching for.
Things hud fallen out better than Hewitt
had darc < l to expect. He saw the key of the
whole mystery In that blue coat , for It waa
the uniform coat of the hall porters at one of
the banks th.it lie had visited in the morn
ing , though which one he could not for the
moment remember. He entered the imroit
postotllce and dispatched a telegrJin to I'lum-
tner ; tli n ho hailed the first available cab
and luurlcd toward the city.
At Lombard street he alighted and looked
In at the door of each bank till he canto tu
Duller , Clayton , Lndds & Co.'s. This waa
the bank ho wanted. In the other banks the
hall porters wore mulberry co.iU , brick-dust
coats , brown coats , nnd what not , but hero ,
behind the ladders and scaffold poles which
obacund the entrance , he could see a man
Hewitt Immediately seized the blue coat.
In a blue coat with dull red piping and brass
buttons. He sprang up the steps , pushed
open the Inner spring door and finally satis
fied himself by a closer view of the coat , to
the wearer's a.'tcnlshment. Then ho regained
the pavement and walked the whole length
of the bank premises In front , afterward
turning up the paved pabsage at the side ,
deep In thought. The bank had no windows
or doors on the sldo next the court , nnd the
two adjoining houses wor& old and snppbrted ,
In places by wooden shores. Iloth were
empty , and a great board announced that
tenders would bo received for the purchase
of the old materials of which they were con
structed In a month's tints ; also that some
part of the site would be let on a long build
ing lease- .
Hewitt looked up at the grimy fronts of
the old buildings. The windows werb
crusted thick with dirt , all cxc'pt the bottom
window of the house nearer the bank , which
was fairly clean nnd seemed to have been
quite lately washed. The door , too , ot this
house was cleaner than that of the other.
though the- paint was worn. Hewitt , reached
and fingered a hook driven Into the left-
hand door pest about six feet from tha
ground. It was new and not at all ruitwU
also , a tiny splinter had been displaced
when the hook was driven In , and clean wood
showed at the npot.
Having observed these things , Hewitt
stepped back and read at the bottom of tha
big bojrd the name "Wlntor & Woekes ,
Survepors and Auctloners , Abchurch Line. "
Then he stepped Into Lombard street.
Two hansoms pulled np near the postofllce ,
and out of the first stepped Inspector rium-
m er and another man. This man and tha
two who alighted from the second hansom
were unmistakably plaln-c'othes constables
their air , gait and boots proclaimed It.
"What's all thU ? " demanded Plumrner as
Hewitt approached.
"You'll coon se ? , I think. But first , hava
you put the watch on No. 197 Hackworth
road ? "
"Yes. Nobody will get away from thera
alone. "
"Very good. I'm going Into Abchurch
lane for a few minutes. Leave your men
out here , but Just go round Into the court
by Bullcr. Clayton & Ladd's , and ke p your
eyn on the first door on the loft. I think
we'll find something soon. Did you get rid
of Miss Shaw ? "
"No ; she's behind now. nnd Mrs. Laker's
with her. They met In the Strand and cimo
after us In another cab , Rare fun , ch ?
They think we're pretty gresn. It's quits
handy , too , So long UH they keep behind mi
It saves all trouble watching them. " And
Inspector Plummer chuckljd and winked.
"Very flood. You don't mind peeping
your eye on that dooor , do you ? I'll be back
very sMn. " And with that Hewitt turned
off Into Abchurch lane.

n Corpse.
One of the most curlouj burial customs
still existing In Ireland and In Somerset
shire. England , Is that of placing salt upon
the breast of a corpse as soon as It has
been properly "laid out" on the coollnpc
board. In Rngland , where the custom * Htlll
prevails cmong n people who hoot the Im-
putat'Qn ' of being superstitious , It Is claimed
that it h done in order "to prevent air from ,
getting Into the corpse , and thus swell and
bloat It. " Campbell and Moresln both refer
to the practice as a survival of old-time cu-
pcrstltlous burial rites. They quote largely
from ancient writers to prove that vaily
Christians all regarded bait as nn emblem
of Immorality and eternity , and that on such
accounts It was anciently used In tha man
ner above mentioned. Harman Is authority
for the statement that the early Germans
not only put salt under the tongues of tholr
dead , but also put little cylinders of rock
s.ilt In the right hands of the sick as soon
as It was learned that such persons u > tra
near death's door.
In most heathen countries , where all llnds ;
of superstition prevails , salt li used as a
chnrm In frightening away evil spirits , and
it Is alleged that the ratngonians frequently
strangle their children to death by forcing
