CHICAGO , May O.-Wlicnt went up with a
rush on crop tlnmngc report ! ) , July closing1
2Wc higher ; July corn Kilned c nnd July
oats 'AC. ' Provisions nlso made modest
Kilns.
Wheat opened otrong nt C3c bid for July ,
compared with , C2Ho nt the close yesterday ,
and It continued firm and with att advancing
*
tendency all forenoon , selling up to C3',4c anil
maintaining Itself near the top most of the
time. It did react about 11 o'clock to KHic ,
but that reaction was taken advantage of
by the early buyers to taka'more , nnd It
had another cpurt to G3ic before 12 o'clock.
It waa claimed that n considerable line of
short wheat was covered for a heavy local
bear speculator. Numerous reports from
various sections of the winter wheat belt re
ceived hero today would almost lead to the
conclusion that a disaster to the crop was
threatened , nnd this , together with much
smaller receipts , added to the strength with
which the bulls held their grip upon previ
ous purchases nnd the readiness with which
they added to them. Minneapolis nnd L > u-
luth received ICO earn , compared with 233 a
year ago , und the total of the primary mar
ket receipts was 102,000 bu. , against 1S3 , < XK )
bu. a year ago , Exix > rt clearances from the
Atlantic seaboard In wheat and Hour to-
pether amounted to 31S.OOU bu. The export
buHlness was more completely barred liy
today's rise In price than It was before , nl-
though Liverpool kept under the parity of
prices ruling here , the reports from
there Indicating pome apprehension regard-
Inp their ability to get nil their wants sup
plied from elsewhere. The matters last re
ferred to and the great uncertainty of haw
tomorrow's government report will be re
ceived by the crowd kept the market strong
and about 12:30 : p. m. the price was Clllc bid
for July. Borne cargoes of No. 2 red were
Bold c. I. f. Huffalo to Daltlmore for New
York handlers of cash grain. U wns re
ported that forty boat loads of No. 2 spring
had been sold In New York for export. Al
though the continental closing cables came
\venk and lower , the market rulsd strong to
the close on the domestic situation , July
closed at 6l4c.
The corn market wan firm , but encoun
tered rmiclL opposition from houses which
handle the cash grain. The receipts were 10'J
cars this morning , In place of 85 , as esti
mated , nnd for tomorrow 218 cars are esti
mated. Primary market receipts were 109,000
bu. , compared with ll,000 ! bu. a year ago.
New York reported Borne Inquiry there from
exporters , nnd sales of eight or ten boat
loads. The opening price for July was 61Vo
nnd U'/iC ' simultaneously. The selling by re
ceiving houses referred to caused a reaction
to WHic , but the great strength displayed by
wheat carried the market beyond the con
trol of the sellers and caused a second ad
vance to filV4c , with from OlUc to ClV&c the
closing price.
Business In oats was of only fair volume ,
nnd fluctuations were left to follow the
other grains. June started at 29c , sold at
Zfliic. declined to from 28VJC to 28c nnd
closed nt from 28c to We. July ranged
from 2Sio to 2Sc , rcstlnc nt 2&c.
Provisions were firmer , but did not gain In
nctlvlty , although making n slight Improve
ment In price In sympathy with the advance
In corn. Hog receipts were 23,000 head , nnd
17.0CO head Is the extent of the estimated run
for tomorrow. Compared with yesterday's
close , September pork Is about 5c higher
nnd July unchanged. Lard Is 7',4o higher
for both July and September , nnd ribs arc
up 7Hc for July and oc for Septcmbjr.

Speculation In Scoiirltlei Yeltonlny Wnii
Strong nncl Actlrr.
NEW YORK , , Mny 9.-Speculatlon on the
Stock exchange today opened strong and active ,
the trading continuing very heavy throughout
the day and bringing the aggregate of the sales
up to the unusually latse total of about 4C5i > oi )
shares. During the first quarter of nn hour the
market advanced on good buying , a large pro
portion of which wns for the foreign account.
The appreciation In values ranged up lo 1C per
cenl , the latter In lialtlmore & Ohio. At the
higher figures realization ! ) set In , and thin was
selling' for the shott account In expectation of a
gcnvint break , but the reaction effected did not
extend a fraction , except In Sugar and Distill
ing , which Uot IH per cent each.
The depression lasted for about nn hour , when
the purchasing movement was renewed , the
conl stocks taking the lead In the ensuing nd-
vnnce , The shorts In Reading nnd New Jersey
Central ruihcd to cover on n report that Inter-
esta closely allied to Jersey Central hail secured
a large Interest In Rending , and thai effuils
would be made lo reorganize on terms more
fnvornhle to stockholders. II was rumored also
that n sctllcment of the conl troubles was Im
minent , but this Induced purchases for both
Recounts In all stocks of the coal group , The
upward movement was very general nnd was
not checked until about delivery hour , when
sale * to take the profits accruing from thin rise
caused a reaction of a fraction generally , 1 per
cent In Sugar nnd l'i per cent In Delaware &
Lncknwanna. In the later trading speculation
ngnln came Into good tone , wllh n partial rally
and Ihe market closed strong. In most cases
prices showed a gain , The Iwnd trading today ,
as on yosteiday , was very slrong nnd animated.
The sales were J4,431,000 , of which JC87.000 were
Texas & Pacific seconds , .
The Evening Posl Knys : On May 1 sight
sterling bills cold nt J4.S3't. Today sales were
made nt ! 4.S7',4 , and Indication * point to still
lower rates tomorrow. The sharp break , nccnnl-
Intc tn prominent dealeis , Is due to pressure to
sell bltH : iinlnsl the purchases of securities for
foreign accounts within Ihe past three monlhs.
So far thla week the purchases of stock on ar
bitrage for foreign nccount amounts to over
1DOif M Him res , and Ihom has also been heavy
purchases of bonds by fore'gn houses. One of
the moHt prominent dealers In foreign exchange
today said : "Within the last thtce nviiths
Europe has taken 100,000.000 of our securities. "
Tile Evening 1'tst'a London cnblegiam says :
The decrease In the coin and bullion In the
Rank of England this week was enthely due to
cash gone Into home circulation , the rxtfm.il
movement of gold for the week being only 5,001
rent to Ilrazll and 5,000 Imported fiom Paris.
The stock markets were strong ttday. The
Knllh- fever Is aiming- and a healthy no Ivlty Is
spreading over all deparlmcnls. Americans were
nrllve nnd buoyant. The German buying was
viY large and .the rise , both In bonds nnd
shares , very general. After a reacllon- prices

strike news. Judging from the Increase In busi
ness and the enormous shipments of stocks ar
riving by each mall , money Is likely to be much
wanted In the American departmenl for Ihe nexl
account. American gold bonds are being largely
boughl by Insuionce olllces. There Is a famine
here In Investment securities. No stock under
the trust account can now be obtained nt c
price equal to even 3 per cent advance. Ar
gentlno stocks are booming on the president's
mocsage. There waa a further excited rise in
copper. The United Stales loan was 10'.4 per

UNION PACIFIC MAD : A STRONG SHOWING
nuthrrti 1'nclflc Made I.lttlo Hcndn-ny In
Inducing thn Overland to Coino Into
the Snn 1 riuirlstii Local
Association.
CHICAGO , May fl , A meeting of western
Ines was held today , and steps tnkcn to
irevent tlic demoralization that has been
reeplng Into the rates ever slnco the In-
itiRurntlon ot the hoincscekcrs' excursions ,
"lie present eastboimJ rnte ot $10 from Den-
i'cr to the Missouri river expires by llmlta
Ion on May 10. It was decided that bit
ither cut rates , whether made because of
ho homcEcelters' excursions , or because cf
ho Denver-Missouri river rate should be
dropped on that date.
No further cut rates will be allowed , and
steps will be taken to prevent any reduc-
Ion In the regular tariffs through the busl
ness of the two additional excursions which
are yet to bo run. llcforo the meeting
convened there was some fear that the
Union Pacific would not abandon Its Inten-
lon of making the $10 rate from Omaha to
Denver , as well as from Denver to Omaha.
The Union Pacific , however , showed that It
liad no Intention of demoralizing rates , and
t moreover made out a very strong case
n backing up Its assertion that the cut In
ho eastbound rate between Denver and the
Missouri river was due more to the fine
ivork of some competitors of the Union
' 'aclflc than to anything done by that line
tself. H agreed entirely with the resolu-
lon providing that the markets should be
cleared and all manipulations stopped on
May 19.
Vlca President Stubbs of the Southern PA-
Iflo had a long conference today with Gen
ral Passenger Agent Lomax of the Union
'nclflc over the California rate situation.
Some time ago , a local association was
"ormcd In California for the purpose of re
moving demoralization and of keeping Ihs
market In a healthful condition. The Union
Vaclflc declined to Join the association. It
ivas found , however , that the association
could not be much of a success with the
Union Pacific on the outside. Mr. Stubba
was anxious to have It become a member ,
but his efforts today did not avail to any
great extent.
WANT TIIJE COUPON TICKET CASKS.
Differences Itetween Southern 1'nolflc nml
Other Itimtls tit Min Francisco.
Hardly Is one question settled In the rail
road world before another springs up to con-
'ound the representative heads of depart
ments of the great systems of rails extcnd-
ng to the Pacific coast.
San Francisco Is now the battle ground for
a principle , and several of the roads , which
have heretofore been eating the dry husks ,
are now enjoying a cuisine In keeping with
California production.
It has been a custom of the Southern
Pacific company to grant a case of tickets
o Its Immediate rail connections doing busi
ness In San Francisco , discriminating In this
particular case against the Burlington and
Rock Island , whose offices In 'Frisco were
permitted to purchase tickets from the South
ern Pacific office In blank , to use a technical
phrase. The Burlington people , although not
an Immediate rail connection , have felt the
unjust discrimination and have never failed
to Intimate to the Southern Pacific road that
the conditions exacted were particularly hard.
Dut they bore with fortitude their grievances.
Lately an attempt was made to form a
local association In San Francisco , and pre
vious to this association formation the South
ern Pacific pulled out all cases of tickets
from other than their own city office , going
upon the theory that ono city office was
enough for any road. And the formation ol
the local association followed. Dut the Union
Pacific and Canadian Pacific refused to sign
the agreement , the former upon the theory
that It Is the Immediate connection of the
Southern Pacific and should bo permitted to
sell tickets over the rails of the Southern
Pacific and Union Pacific without subjecting
prospective travelers to the discomforts ol
running about town looking for Southern
Pacific offices. The refusal of the Union
Pacific to enter a local agreement has re
sulted In the Southern Pacific granting the
right to all roads doing business In San Fran
cisco to sell tickets In blank. The pro
visional agreement between the roads party
to the contract expires today and It wll
then bo determined whether all the roads
represented In San Francisco will unlto tn
protecting eastbound rates.
JtlUvrnuknp Isiue * n Munlfo'tn.
General Passenger Agent George II. Heat-
ford of the Milwaukee sent out to connect
ing lines yesterday the following circular , re
ferrlng to the action of the passenger de
partment of the Union Pacific : "On am
after May 1 , the Union Pacific sys
tern will decline to accept over Its
line between Council Bluffs and Omaha
tickets having coupons reading over other
lines west of Omaha. Would request , there
fore , that all such tickets be withdrawn from
sale at once.
"In order to avoid possible- misunderstand
ing on the part of our connections as to the
Intent and meaning of the circular referred
to above , you are hereby advised that this
company , by lease of the Omaha brldgo anc
Omaha terminal facilities , runs Its owr
trains over that brldgo between Councl
Bluffs and Omaha , no bridge coupon being
required.
'Therefore , nil tickets Issued via the Chicago
cage , Milwaukee & St. Paul railway to points
beyond Omaha may read over the lines 01
any ot our connections from Omaha , excepi
the Union Pacific.
"Tickets reading over the Chicago , Mil
waukee & St. Paul railway In connection
with the Union Pacific to points west of
Omaha , should , however , read only to Coun
cil muffs via our line , thence via the Union
Pacific. "

General Passenger Agent Lomax of the
Union Pacflc has gone to Chicago with the
determination of placing bcforo the chairman
of the Western Lines Passenger association
his evidence against the Burlington , collected
during the pa t six months , showing that the
road now making charges against the "Over
land" has been culpable In a multiplicity o
cases.
While the fight over rates Is not over by
any means , Mr , Lomax feels that his redress
lies with the chairman of the Western Lines
Passenger association , and he has gone to the
direct head with Ills complaints. Incl
dentally ho will remain to attend a callo
meeting of transcontinental lines with a view
of the formation ot a transcontinental asso
elation.
