THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : SUNDAY , MAY 5 , 1895. CONDITION OF OMAHA'S ' TRADE Business in a Jobbing Way Shows Borne Little Improvement , PROSPECTS BRIGHTER IN SOME UNtS * _ I'rlcm Show n Temlonrjr Tovrnrd ririnncsi Miiiiufiicturcru Considering tha Ail- visibility of liming nn Kxpoil- tlon Produce Pointer * . As notcJ a week ago the Jobbers of Hie city ure talking In a more encouraging tone about the present condlllon and the future prospects of business for Ihe coining summer and fall. The rcvUnl of business la necossailly slow , but It U an Indisputable fact that progress Is being inaile tovvanl a more satisfactory situation In most lines of the Jobbing trade. According to most accounts the Jobbing trade In groceries has been of larger volume during the past week than for Hume little time ThlH does not appear to be due to nny great revival In nny particular Hoctlon of the country tributary to this market , but to a general Improvement all along the line. The mates west of Nebraska have l > cen quite large buyers , whllo the Iowa trade has been good. In Nebraska the volume of huslnes Is really larger than most Jobb rs had reason to expect that It would be this early In the season liven In those Bectlorm of thu state where the drouth vvai the most severe there appears to foe eon- Hlderable money In thu nands of farmers. Several in1 ! chants have been In thu city during th ( past week fiom the western part of th' state anil report that people who have been helped through the winter with charity goods me now commencing to buy supplies nt the stores , tor which thev am able to pay cash. The supposition Is that tlies1 people were not ic-illy us miuh In need of assistance as they pretended , but those who ale familiar with the VCT > high prices that nre being puld foi rough cattl1 , commonly known In the market as butchers' Block , and which In ordinary seasons are worth almost nothing , may see some other explanation for the money found In th" hands of farmers In the vveitern portion of the state. As u rule the retail trade Is buying for the Immediate demands of their trade only and there is Btlll no perceptible Inclination toward speculativebuying. . In hardware local jobbeis report the out look ns very much brighter. There ap pears to be u better feeling In all branches of th trade. The volume of business has been Homovh.it larger dining the sK clays under review , and the pnsi month as u whole shows somu gain in the amount of goods sold , ns compared with a > cnr ago. It Is not pretended that any great anima tion piovulif In the market , or that the \olumc of trade oqitils the dealings common at this season of the jem In thu old times The dullness prevailing In the building trades In the city and countiy Is n serloui drawback and Is one of the main causes for the reduced volume of sales as compared with former years. The market Is lltmlng UP a little , though there has been no gteat tfaln In the matter of prices The reports fiom jobheis engaged In the handling of boots and shoes all agree th it thereIs n fair demand for -oods In their Hw , ' ami that trade during the pist week has been fully as good as could be expected under the present conditions. The maiket on most all lines of bo > ts and sines Is firming up nnd prices nre now consldeiafoly higher ttnn they were n Hhort time ago As explained last week th' advance Is dii- to the rapid Increase In the price of hides , owing to the shortage of cattle and Ihe con sequent advance In leather During the past week the manufacturers of New Eng land met nnd agreed to advance the prices on shoes The amount of the ndvanre will range nil the way from C cenls to 2j cents per pair. The drj goods trade has been without any verv noteworthy feature during the past week There has been n fair trade In seasonable lines of goods , but no great activity The re-cunt advance In the price of cotton goods Is attracting n good deal 01 attention At the bcglnlng of March the demand for cotton goods was limited , the tone dull nnd prices frequently unste.idv on the lowest basis evei recoi lot ! Today the demand Is good , even after a very large business tiansacted In the Interval , the tone Is strong , prices are materially higher In most directions nnd show a continued up- waid tendency. For some time after the courseof the market changed there was consldciable skepticism on the j ) irt ot the general run ot buyers as to the genuine character of the movement , nnd even yet doubts nre occasionally expressed of Its permanency. An Impartial review of the situation suggests , however , that sucl douhtH nro based on sentiment rather than on pievalllng conditions , or , nt the best , on the fact that the llrst Impulse to the upvvar movement came from the cotton marks rather than from the mirket for cotton K ° ° ' 1' ' ' MVH STOCK SITUATION. During the past month there have been received at South Omaha 3JI'.D ' head of cat tle , 87.001 hogs and 27 107 sheep Of this number there were consumed at South Onmha lii,7S > ! > cattle , 7S,9i1 hogs nnd C'Jt > 5 Hhcep In other words , the South Omaha packing houses used a llllle over ono-half of the total number of cattl- received , al most all tha hogs nnd about one-quarter of the sheep Comparing these ilgures vvllh the receipts for April , 1SJI It will be shown that then- has been a decrease during the past month amounting to Sfi.OM head of cattle nnd fn.37.1 hogs , but a gain In the Bheep receipts of U.1UJ It will be noted thu the cuttle receipts hav fallen off dur ing the past month over one-half , as com pared with the sam * month a year ago. From January 1 up to the ptescnt date there has been a decrease In the arrivals of stock as cv-mpared with the tortespond- ing peilod of Ibul amounting to U7.1M cat tle , 70,770 hogs and 1G.1SS she p. The shortage In cattle , especially In this section of the country , becomes more ap parent every day On some days during the past week there have not been enough beef cattle In the yards at South Omaha to make a mntK'-t , and the pai kers have been com pelled to buy cattle In other markets and ship them here In order to keep their houses running. Since the flr t of the- year the shoitage In cattl- tit the four leading markets of the country amounts to 3.3UOO. ! ns compared with la t jear , and SGj.WW as compared with two vears ago. Althcugh cattle nro PO scare tha de mand for beef during the few weeks pist has been fa light that the market on live animals has been slow nnd dull much of the time The figures given below will fur nish n veiy good Idea of the actual situation so far ns receipts are concerned. During the two e irs past they have made nn exhibit at he state fair at Lincoln Last jear the ssoclntlon had some tiouble with the fair eople , the latter refusing to refund certain \pendltures which they promised. As a esult the manufacturers voted that In the uture they would go their own way alone md let the fair association do the same I'hls action was taken by the association vhlle the fair was still located at Lincoln mil the motion was supportel by the Lln- oln as well as Omaha members After It was decided to locate the fair at Omaha IL itrong effort was made to Induce the manu- 'actiners tn reconsider their action nnd ote to make nn exhibit nt the state fair U the last meeting of the association the natter was brought up , but the Omaha lumbers , who were In the majority , did not feel like taking luck what they had said n the past. Just because the fair had been thanht'd fiom Lincoln to Omaha , nnd the most that thej would do was to appoint n committee to confer with the talr people This committee has been talking the matter over , but Is no nearer a solution of the dllll- ulty than befoie Kven If the differences letween the fair people anl the manufactur- TS were wlp l out , It does not appear how -he Manufacturers' association could make un exhibit nt the fair grounds Ihe fair issocintlon has provided one building for a merchants' and manufacturers' exhibit , which Is thrown open to exhibits from nil iirts of the country , and would not be arge enough to accommodate the membeis of the Manufacturers' association even If hey were given the whole jpacc The mein- icrs nnd olllcers ot the Manufacturers' as sociation disclaim any disposition to work igalnst the fair enterprise , but they do not see bow they nre to make an exhibit If there Is no building for them U has been suggested that the fair association put ui a building especially for the manufacturers , > ut this Is said to be an Impossibility Some ot the manufacturers mo In favor of having an Independent exposition They nre advo- intlntr the erection of a temporary building lown town and the holding of an exposition to commence one week In ndvaneof the fair , and then continue open evenings dur ing the fall week. The plan Is to put up a building In such n manner that the lumber ci ulil be taken back again by the compiny furnishing It. which would work a large saving In the cmt It Is estlmited that IT building 10Sx200 feet would be largo rnougl to meet the requirements ot the as'oclntlon s members Suih a building would fiirnh'l- 115 spaces foi exhibits , nine feet wide bj ten to twenty feet In length. Several manu factuicrs have ? ald that they would go era a guarantee bond to put up such a building. . ouri.ooic is .MUCH SIKICIITKII. Everything Now Point * to a Season o ( ! rei\t Prmporltv. The representative for the Snow , Churc & to. mercantile agency In summing up the business outlook expresses himself ns follows' The trade situation In Omaha during the past week has not materially changed from that of the piecedlng week , although every thing Indicates that there has been n healthy Increase In all lines of business and a very decided feeling of encouragement on the part of both wholesalers and retailer1. In nil lines There have been bcattered rains which have practically covered the entire t.tate , which have done much toward rendering the farming element very happy , and nil things now point to the conclusion that Nebraska will this > ear have n crop of which she may be proud. Ueilers In furniture have been extending their territory very largely and report a decided betterment In trade and good pros pects for the future. Some of the energetic furniture dealers of Omaha have sent their men as far west as Oregon nnd Washing ton , and report In that territory a good tr.ide , nnd that Omaha stands well as .1 furniture center Dealers In carpel * , dra peries nnd kindred lines report a llnanl growing business , and say that they have no spare time to worry about the possibilities of a failure of crops or of a falling oft In business. There has been no material change In col lections , although they jro a * had > be t-r tlnn during the preceding week. Dealers In building hardware report n healthier feeling nnd antlclpita considerable trade In their line during the summer nnd tall , ( . 'rmtraetors nnd builders report many Inquiries ns to prospective builders , and the } look forward to a busy summer. The stale fair Is b-lng pushed ne rapldl > as any one- could wish , and during the past week the project was regularly Incorporated and the committee \vhMc dutv It Is to pro cure the MarJl Orns floats at New Orleans are now at that point , and It Is to bo hoped that they will meet with no opposition and will successfully perform the duties allotted to them. There have been no heavy failures In the west tributary to Omahii duilng the past w eek * Hank clearings nre growing steidlly anl Indicate a healthy revival In conclusion It might be said that Omaha Is on the high road to her old position In the mercantile world , nnd there Is nothing In sight to warrant a fear of dlsastei or n sot back , but on the contrary everything to Indicate a revival In nil llii"s of business.
