. t THE OMAHA. DAILY BEE ; , % yrKPAY , APRIL 21 , 1895. 13 Recent Bains Have Restored a Feeling of Confidence , OUTLOOK FOR BUSINESS GROWS BRIGHTER Now liver/thing Depends Upon the Coin Ing Crop-nith It Anurc.l Nclmtika Will Again Jllonoin Mice the Hoio Immigration on the Move. There has been but little feature In the jobbing trade durltiB the week Juslt closed. The Inspiration of the encouraging rainfall Is still In evidence and the tendency Is con- Htantly toward Improved condltlotm. The Improvement that followed the rains con tinues anil the week has been very Balls- factory In all lines. As a rule , business Is no better than It wns last year at this time. The volume Is greater In BOIIIO lines , but on the whole no material Increase Is noticeable. It must be remembered , however , that up to this time last year business was very Kood. Then the drouth brought loss and Discouragement and consequent falling oft , nil around. Since then tho. country business men have reached hardpan. Many of them were entirely discouraged nnd did not hesi tate to declare that business In Nebraska was ruined for years to come. Taking this Into consideration the present situation IH more than encouraging. That confidence has been restored nnd that merchants are buying lll5f , n1i"ber.al.ly ns last sprlnf ? Is a ( latter- - Jniftestimonial of the recuperative powers of the young commonwealth. It affords Abundant promise that unless another mis fortune shall Intervene next fall will see the. biggest business that has ever been done In Umahu ut that seHBOii. I * Ut It Is worthy of note that the bulk of the business Is on staple lines. While retailers ] 'ave not gathered enough confidence to Justify them In ntocktng up with fancy Kood.t to any great extent , they nre buying their usual quota of staples. This would Indicate that the bulk of the people are still confining their wants to necessities and learning from their previous misfortunes to llvo within their means. There Is one factor In the Jobbing trade this spring that has not been generally taken Into account. This Is the Immense number of carloads of supplies that have be n shipped Into Nebraska by the various relief organizations and distributed among thousands of families In every part of the state. These supplies have unquestionably relieved many who were Buffering , but the jobbing trade cannot fall to be more or leps damaged. Kvery car of supplies that has been shipped In from other states is just so much trade lost to the Nebraska Jobbers nnd retailers. The records of the relief commission Indicate that the iiggregate of these supplies Is something enormous and If It was added to the sales of the Nebraska merchants It would be a material Item. Local Jobbers have had a good business up to last night. The traveling men report fair success , with the most encouraging prospects. There have been no fluctuations' ' In staple lines and prices show very little variation from the quotations of a week ago. In dry goods the demand runs to staples nnd these are very llrm. Summei underwear Is more active then previously nnrl there Is an active business In all lines of cotton goods. The grocery trade Is Improving , but It I : without Incident. All staple lines are stead > HI former prices. There are some Indica tions of a better demand for higher grade goods nnd the feeling Is noticeably Im proved , but so far the highest grades art not called for to any extent. All reports Indicate a material Improvement - ment In collections. This has been cspeclallj marked since the rains , which seem tc have Induced a general loosening up ten dency. Requests for time are not nearlj ns frequent ns they were n year ago. nm while money Is still scarce , most of tin country dealers are settling up their bllli when they become due. AS BEI1N JJV HUN1.- ) With Uootl Crop ! this Will Ha n I'rnupcrou ! Voar. W. II , Roberson. manager of R. G. Dui & Co.'s mercantile agency In Omaha , speak Ing of trade conditions for the week , says : "The hopefulness of the communlt ; grows with each successive day. Abundan moisture , good working weather , an earl ; miring nnil appreciating prices all stlmu late agricultural operations. The peopl are rapidly reaching the conviction tha 18U.J will be a memorable crop year. Th total failure of last year leaves the FO | with more than Its usual growing strength AVlth rains , therefore , the yield of cereal must be larger than for years , and posslbl the largest In our history. Everybody 1 banking on the crop and nobody will b disappointed. "Locally , trade Is not rushing. Good ot tiers are reported from Montana and th far west , and fair business In western lows but our own ntat Is 'buying shy , ' and busl ness Is necessarily quiet. The fall order coming In , however , Indicate a better fee ] Ing nnd give promise of an exceptional sea ton. ton."The busiest mart In Omaha today Is tha made by the commission dealers of th city. They have gathered themselves tc gather and they ore handling a grea many goods , though the demand Is not o largo ns In former seasons. "Out In the state the active land ager t Is beginning to hunt up customers , an land seekers nre not by any means uncorr mon. C. C. Hunt of Ilemlngford was 1 iny ofllce the other day , having como to th city to push Uox Butte county Into alter tlon. He surprised me with some of th facts he made known regarding his set tlon. No aid was asked and none require by the farmers nnd ranchers and they at now boasting that * hen ? o many oth ( regions sent up a wall of distress the kept right on growing stock and gettln ready for this year's crop. From M Hunl'H statements I should conclude tha the coming year will witness a very nctlv ninrkel for Nebraska farm lands. "The country Is pretty well bereft t cattle nnd hon and Smith Omaha Is then lore rather a disappointing market to HUO ns ship here , but one of our clients brougl In J20.000 worth of far west catlle In single shipment this weak. The nmrki was not all a shipper might wish , but prlco were high und stiff. Unless Secretnr Morton has managed to bridge over tli short crop of cattle by the admission < Mexican stock , prices will go still hlghe Meantime South Omaha must not forgi I that Chicago and Kansas Ulty are marke whose active commission men never slec nnd who nre anxious to stick the stlleti .Into the vital.organism of the youngest < the three great stock markets of Amerlc "Business men are quite disposed l lethargy In times when business Is dull nti tmprolltnblc. She hi the pluck , the location and the capital maintain herself and these elements are ground work for prosperity which cann. . bo undermined If vigilance , public xplr and contldcncu will reinforce and gland I them. In commenting upon the business situ tlun Snow , Church & Co.'s mercantl agency nays : "The remarkable Increase In prices some llnca of goods Is the most uotal : feature In general trade conditions nt tli time. "There Is no apparent reason why t Increase In prices should be merely lei porary In fact , they have ben ut mich low figure , that the Improvement can on be looked urxm , lit a measure , as a rail There li no doubt that Ihe result will beneficial to trade In general. "According to reports from the east , the lo Increased confidence In the general situa tion. I/ically , the favorable condition ot the weather has done much to encourage merchants , There has been no Immediate lnciFe ! n the volume of trade , but the general tone Is betler and Ihere Is no ques- tlon as to the ultimate Increase In business that Is bound to come with the Improve ment of crop profpeclit. "Merchants , both In wholesale and retail lines , look forward to several months of dull business , but there Is no question that If present favorable conditions , both as to crops and ns to general Improvement In the markets , continue , the fall will open up fairly well , "Collections are coming In fairly well. The light for the freight differential Is once more on , and Omaha Jobbers are hope ful that the final and favorable settlement of thin Important matter may be reached very soon. The managers of the stale fair nre using Ihelr ulmost exertions and claim that Ihe fair Ihls year will be grealer llian ever. "Tho new Ihealcr Is progressing very well , nnd there are oher enlerprlses which seem on the point of consummation. "Reports lo the effect that there nre many farmers coming to the state continue to come In. A careful summary of the situa tion shows continued dullness of business for the present , nnd nn Indication of mile Improvement In the actual volume of trade for the next few months , but the pro pects nrp exceedingly bright , nnd unless nil favor able conditions full , there Is little doubt thai Ihe full will uglier In the gradual Improvement - provement In trade HO often predicted , and so long In coming. "Unless there Is n decided relapse , nnd a failure In crops , both contingencies , or either of them being hardly probable , this fall will see the beglnlng of a new era of Improvement , slow , but well established , on the sound foundation of well grounded pros perity. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Wheat Opened with Surprising Strength in View of the Conditions. Knormous covering by Panlrldgc nnd other shorts sent wheat up at a dizzy gait again today. The market gained nbout 2c per bu. since Ihe close yes- lerduy , nnd on Ihe ctitb , after the close of the session , there was a struggle for cults for Monndy on May wheat at from CHic to C3c. Corn had a somewhat similar expe rience with wheat , and rose under It le per bu. , and oats gained 'He. Provisions ruled dull but llrm nnd tnada moderate gains. Wheat opened with surprising strength. The facl lliat Pnrdrldge had covered be tween 4,000,000 nnd 0,090,000 bu. of shorts yes- Icrday did not prevcnl p.ople In Ihe counlry from silling up lo send nlghl messages to buy wheat at the opening this morning. The pit appeared to be full of buying or ders at the start , and Instead of sellers of May uttrom GS'.ic to USUc , as at the close of yesterday's session , there were buyers nt from GS'/ic to Gbc. Under such condlllons of the local holdings nn excited advance In Ihe llrst half hour was unavoidable. The demand for July wns the most urgent. It closed yesterday nt HUfcc , and In less than twenty minutes It was bringing GUic. Com paring that with CCMc , which It sold at on Monday last , shows that the market Is doing quite well. I'ardrldge & Lcemlng , whose principal customer Is Ed I'ardrldge , bought freely of July ; Kosenkrnnz , who stood out on his short wheat through yes terday's razzle , come In this morning , nnd some buying In of wheat on acount of what they bought of I'ardrldge was done by two or three houses with whom thlM sp 'culutor In ( lucstlon had been slow In pulling up nargins. The local speculative conditions , 'ere the chief factors In the market. The rlnclpal Item is that practically nil the vallable whent east of the Heckles Is In Jhlcugo , and the dally accruing evidence liat It Is needed both for export and horns onsumptlon. The k-eek's exports were S.lfti.GO ) bu. from both oasts , compared with 2,931,000 bu. on the veek before. Primary market receipts for he day were 203,000 bu. , against 210,000 ' bu. i year ago. Country millers bought' 20,000 m. of No. 2 red here nt the May price. The hrcwdest traders in the pit were woefully leceived In the course of the market after ts llrst lively advance to CWc for May and jO'/iiC for July. In the last twenty minutes of the session the excitement was re- loubled. May rose to COc and July to Clc , md those were the prices at the close. Th ° corn market was also all torn tip by he distracted condition of the shorts , rap- aln Phillips was the most prominent locnl short and commenced early In the day to buy In Fhort corn. St. Ixmla followed later , md with their competition , added to limited offerings , the market became very active and the prices shot up excitedly and closed with May at 47i' ! and July nt 47ic. OatH developed considerable activity and n heavy business was transacted. I'rlcea closc.il at ths high iKJlntsj of the day. The advance was principally the result of n icare among shorts , and buying wns heavy by nil. Wheat and corn showed such ex- reme strength they were very .Influential n marking out the course of oats , although the Jlrmness wns principally Independent. May sold from 28',4c to ! * % & : % ( . up to J9 > jc , and closed there. July started at )7' f , sold up to 2SVic , and rested ut that iirlce. Provisions were llrm , but comparatively steady. There were less than srii ) fresh cut. tie , a DUO decrease , as compared with n week ago , and with not enough of any one kind to Interest buyers , the trade was dull. Some pretty good cornfed beeves sold nl $5.25 , but there wore so few on sale that buyers were Indifferent , and while there was no quotable change In prices from yes terday this Indifference made It hurd work for sellers to clean up. The market hat Kone off fully 2ofr30c this week , nnd K CCOc as compared with the high time , and with the decline In price the demand has fallen off. There were only three or four loads ol cows nnd heifers on wale , and the tradi was like the steer market , dull , lluyers were bearish because of unfavorable reports fiom other points nnd bids were close to n quarter lower than the llrst of the week Sellers were not inclined to make the con cessions asked , and consequently business drugged , nuils and veals showed llttlt change.
