OMAHA LOSES A HUT GAME
Jimmy Manning Snntchcs Defeat from the
Tire by ( ho Little Eun.
CLOSE CONTEST FROM FIRST TO LAST
Homo Train'Vtnknem In the 11 ox and iloo
Lntnn Arm ICrnpoiiilliln for
tlio Defeat Individual Work
of thn Fielders.
That was a great game of ball at the
Charles Street i rk yesterday afternoon be
tween Jimmy Manning's Kansas City nines
and Joe Walsh's I toil Sox. It was chock full
of vim and vinegar from the very Jump and
should have been easy for the Omalms.
There were two contingencies , however , that
rendered this nil. One was that Donnelly ,
who pitched the first four Innings , was la
mentably weak , and the sejond that Joe
Walsh Is unfit for actlvo service. Ho has alamo
lame wing , and It IB agonltlng to watch
him attempt to got It across to first. Ho
should lay off until his arm Is fully restored.
Ho Is taking an unnecessary risk In tlicso
exhibition games , and Is liable jo further
aggravate his deficiencies. What Joe needs
Is a good rest , with moderate exercise , from
now until the championship season opens ,
one week from Tuesday next.
Donnelly , In the four Inulugs ho ofllciatcd ,
was hit safely seventeen times , Including
four doubles. The result of this drubbing
was nlno runs , four of which were earned ,
attesting the fact of his lack of condition.
Kagan , who succeeded him , was Infinitely
better , and ho held the husky lllucs down to
six hits and flvo runs. Ho Is cool and col
lected at all times and looks as If ho was
going to prove the team's mainstay In tbo
box.
box.Lohmati
Lohmati caught well and Shaffer deported
ll himself like a real ball player , smashing
young 3 Mr. Stoltz right and left , stealing
four 1 bases , making three runs and fielding
beautifully. Ulrlch was alive , ns usual , In
the struggle from beginning to end , and
asldo from his unlucky batting , playing ball
for all It Is worth. Staple , too , by his
masterly fielding , continued to evoke the
respect of the fans , and I'aco put up a stiff
article of the game.
On the other side all played first-clans
ball , and their batting was timely nnd ter
rific. Dig Bill Kinsman , Ilcrnon and Nat-
tress ere a mob by themselves , while Man
ager Jim's work was up to his well known
old time standard. Despite their excellent
work , however , as anomalous as It may
seem , Omaha should have won. This after
noon "Amos" Huslc , the Kansas City giant ,
will show his brethren frc- . . off the Kaw
what he can do In the way of conrolutlng
the sphere. The score :

SAN JOSE , Cal. . April 19. San Jose has
Justified her claim that she has the- fastest
track In the world. The city celebrated the
opening of the Garden City Cyclers' new
three-lap cement track In grand style. The
day was a holiday. It was the llrst meet
of the season sanctioned by the
League of American Wheelmen. There
were not Ic. ° s than I.CCO people pres
ent , among them wheelmen from all over
the state. Kddle Halt ! of Uuffalo. N. Y. .
again demonstrated that he is a champion
by the manner In which he won the two-
mile scratch , class H. Kvcry one was In
anxious expectancy of Ihe final heat In the
two-mile race. In which were entered Kd
wards , of whom much was expected , Foster ,
Tcrrel , Hat-bottle , Coulter and liald. The
riders were paced by tandems. Xclglur
failed to qualify. It wns a race from the
crack of the pistol till Hnlil passed the tape
with another world's record to his credit
1:15 : 1-5 for two mile * , the former record
being 4:21 : 2-5 , made by Xclgler In Denver.
Hald look the lead for the llrst mile. The
pickup by the second tandem was beautiful ,
and It was aeen from the pare set that a
record was sure to be made. On the second
mile ItMwards took the lead , with Foster
second and the others close up. On th ? last
lap Foster came with a rush that caused
the crowd to go wild with excitement. Hut
In the last 100 yards Hald came from the
rear with a. rush that carried him over the
tape half a wheel ahead of Coulter of To
ledo , O. , who was lopped by Kdwards , with
Foster a close tourth. The other races were
well contested , particularly the final of the
