CHICAGO , April 19.-\Vheat today went up like a rocket and down like the stick , 1'ardrjdge contributing to the Inlluence both way * . Itls covering of an enormous short line of 4,000,000 to C.000,000 bu. caused the advance , nnd when his line was In prices dropped from luck of support , May closing unchanged after a l ! c bulge. May corn and oats each cloned He higher and pro visions made slight gains. Wheat was again In good demand when the market opened , although some little May wheat was sold at as low as GSc nnd July ns Ionan C9c nt and around the open- Ing. About two hours nfter the opening shorts were eagerly bidding K > Uc and taking It nt C3',4o ' when sellers appeared reluctant. The Inllucnccs were largely of a local character , but Liverpool , London , Paris and Iterlln all ucnt higher quotations at the opening. The demand for Hour was reported from nil directions to l > c good nt dally Improving prices. I'rlmary market receipts were light. The exports from Atlantic ports were much lighter than on the day before , but the shipping demand here for wheat to go citst was early In the day reported to be ex cellent. Among other matters was the con tinuation of the dry weather. An advance to C95gc took place before the May shorts were allowed breathing space , but at that price , which was IVfcc per bu. more than It was worth nt the close yesterday , there was n general taking of profits , followed by a very quick reaction of Ic per bu. from the top , Ki'XiC ' being the trading price for May about five minutes nfter 12 o'clock. The extraordinary demand for May wheat , ns compared with the desire for July wheat , Is seen In the fact that while May on the advance rose to from GSc to IBSic , July In the same time only Improve-d from r.9o to COUc , the spread thus narrowing to Ho per bushel , ns against the recent differ ence of nbout Ic. . The business In the pit was broad. 1'ardrldgu covered n great deal of May wheat today through houses other than 1'ardrldge & Leemlng , his usual brokers. With the relief afforded by the selling out nt n profit of much long wheat the pit ( tuletexl down nnd the few buying orders which came In In the afternoon were supplied by the scalpers. May settled down around CS'Ao ' and stayed there for a con siderable time without life enough to move. In the last twenty minutes of the session It became common rumor that Pardrldrc had covered between 4,000.000 and 5,000,000 bu. of his May and July wheat and was now practically ashore. He certainly covered freely , but Is not supposed In well Informed circles to have bought In one-half of his line. The market became heavy toward the end. May sank gradually to 6Sc , and closed at GSV&c bid. The corn market was firm , with a ten dency early In the day to follow the fluc tuations In wheat , but later , when the friends of wheat had deserted It , the corn market did not "respond to the other's weak ness nnd closed a shade higher for the day , the latest trading In May being at 45c. It Bold as high ns 46'Sc when wheat was on Its high horse. The receipts were 187 cars and shorts covered rather freely. Onts met with a fairly good sale. The ad vance In wheat was followed only on n moderate scale and offerings Increased ns the price was added to It. Carrlngton , Han nah and Hartiett-Frazler sold heavily. May started at 28Hc nnd sold up to 2S4c. There was rnthor scant buying at that price nnd a drop followed. The decline went ns. far ns 28c , at which price the market closed. July EOld from 27V1C to 27c , lip to 27c to 27'/c , end rested nt 27 ! c , % c higher. The provision market opened weak on receipts of 3,000 more hogs than had been estimated and 5c decline In their value. Later the market became firm with wheat nnd In lots quite strong , with Uie early decline turned Into nn advance. In the end pork' closed with n net gulh of 12&C , lard advanced 2&c nnd ribs Gc. Dun & Co.'s weekly review of trade , which Ipsues tomorrow , will say ; In every speculative department the business Is growing , but this Is really the least satisfactory feature of the situation. Cotton , oil nnd wheat climb above the export price , so that the marketing of products abroad must be checked , and money Is absorbed which ought to be emptied In productive Industries and In dis tribution of products to consumers. Everybody knows that oil has not risen 200 per cent be cause It la Intrinsically more valuable , nor Is wheat actually worth more than It was two or three weeks ago , but the expansive and uplifting force has fortunately taken to speculation rather than to production , nnd BO we have hlRher prices In all speculative markets without a Inrge demand for consumption. Stories of combina tions between the Standard OH company nnd Russia ns to partition of the consuming terri tory by no means account for recent prices of petroleum , which nppear to l > e entirely fictitious. There Is no evidence that cotton Is In larger de mand than It was when the price was n. cent lower , but prices have been BO law for months that an upward movement was easy wllhsut much reason , though clocks here and abroad are 300.000 bales larger than at the same date after the greatest crop ever produced heretofore , and spinners here and abroad have taken about 1.000,000 bales more than they have consumed. The rise tends to prevent the decrease of ncre < age , which Is Its one reasonable excuse. Wheat has advanced over 3 cents during the past week , and the western receipts are small , only 1,002,846 bushels , ngalnet 1,760.829 last year , but Atlantic exports for three weeks of April have IHVII only 5,6C6,4S1 bushels , flour Included , against 6,080,366 last year , and there Is no Indi cation that the foreign demand will Increase , while the prospects for this year's crop are con sldered excellent. Western receipts are nn' large , and It would be strange If they were , with prices FO low , but advancing. Exports continue to Indicate that the European demand will not txi particularly heavy this season. Outside of speculative markets the most Im portant feature Is the rise In the price of beef , but which Is largely due to the control ol sources of supply by n few strong corporations. There ought to be , but apparently Is not , suffi cient power In the hands of the government to meet any such conspiracy ngnlnst the public , nnc the proposal of Kecrelary Mortwi to admit Mex ican cattle nnd cattle from Canada on easy terms for the benefit of consumers Is heartily commended , though It Is not likely to have much Influence. The actual decrease In receipts 01 cattle at tlu > four chief western markets has been 200.000 head during the first quarter of U95 and the quantity killed has only been 80,000 hen less than last year , about 10 per cent , but facts havu little to do with prices In this case , as In the case of oil. In Iron and steel the situation Is ralher dlsap pointing , although the output continues large , as the demand for tlnlxhed products does not seem to Increase. Structural forms nre In large de mand , but soles of wire are aNiut 30 per ceni less than last year , and In other branches there Is no perceptible gain , It Is still nn open ques tlon whether the consumption will support the. manufacture nt the present rate , which Is an eighth below the present maximum. The cotton mills nr encouraged by Improving prices , nnd are fairly busy. Sales of wool nt the three chief eastern markets have been 18.334,0cx pounds for three weeks of April , against 14.C02,80i la.it ycnr , which Indicates that the production o goods Is. at present larger than It has been n any time for nearly two years , nnd while foreign competition la seriously felt In some branches the manufacturers nre making a vigorous effoi 13 retain the homo market , even In lines which at one time they expected to abandon. Failures this week have been 241 In th , . United States , against 219 laat year , and W In Canada , against 45 last year. OIL. FALLS 8iViitAL : CENTS. That left very few fat cattle on sale anil not enough to really make a market , even had other conditions been favorable. The beef market was simply demoralized , nnd It was not merely a question of price , but of soiling at any price. On such a tnntuct It Is Im- pos.Hlblo to say with any degree of assur ance exactly how much lower the market was than yesterday. Some were calling It lOc to 15c lower , while others were going farther back nnd were figuring on a de cline of fully 75c since the high time. There were only about three loads of cows and heifers on sale , nnd , though there were so few- they , too , sold lower. Stockers and feeders were In Il ht supply and lighter demand.
