Ho had him arrested en the charge of arson , but East was cleared In police court on an alibi. East then sued for $10,000. charging false and malicious arrest , bringing suit on March 6 , shortly after the flre. Cotton has filed his answer , detailing how It came about that ho charged East with the crlmo nnd why he claims he acted In good faith. He states that ho was told by Charles Vleld , Ilarney Connolly and William Gray , pevcral weeks bcforo the lire , that East had ( old them that Cotton would sell no Ice from thu Ice house this summer , nor would any bo peddled from It , as ho Intended to get oven with Cotton. On the night of the flre ho says . a man answering East's description was seen running away from the burning building , and that ho Informed Sergeant Whalen nnd At torney Day of these facia and under their direction flled the complaint. Ho left $23,000 of property. Walter Thackcry and the Omaha Street Hallway company have settled the case brought by Thackery for $10,000 damages. J. N. Frcnzcr sues A. II. Dufreno for hav ing effected a loan for $15,000 , and asks a commission of $375 which he says has not been paid him. Allco V. Sllvls sues AVlllIam Bowman to recover possession of a quarter section of land In township IS , and also asks damages for a refusal to yield possession. As a defense to the action for $ SOO brought by tlio Hank of Crcston against the Camp bell Commission company for falling to pay a draft , the company claims that the hogs were never shipped to It by M. Sharrar , the shipment of which was the condition that the draft should bo honored. In the Injunction suit between the Na tional Dulldlng company and F. F. Ford , In which the latter has been enjoined from renting out a lot comprising eight pianos , It has been developed that the pianos were leased. The attorneys are disputing as to whether this meant vhat Is locally and technically known as a sale , or was a rental of the pianos. The guardian ut II. G. nichter has flled a showing In court , claiming that his ward was Insane at the time when the Michigan Mu tual Ufe Insurance company secured a mort gage of him for $1,600 on part ot lot 10 in Kountza & Ituth't addition , and hence asks that the mortgage be annulled , Instead of being foteclosed as asked. William Hanson , a truckman at the Dearborn street railway sta tlon , who has been playing one of the mos clever games the postal Inspectors were ovei called , upon to unravel , \vas _ detected and ar rested at Elgin yesterday. Hanson's night du ties consisted of handling the mall pouches Three months ago ho made a key to open the pouches. He would take a handful o letters from a pouch , especially those ad dressed to postmasters , and extract the money advices. Ho would then search the pouch for nil letters addressed to parties whom the advices named. Taking these let tcrs , he would wash oft In chemicals thi amounts named In the advices and the orders dors , fill In higher figures , make the money orders payable to some one else and have Identification waived. The advices he woul < rcmall to the postofllces. In order to supply the proper margins on the money orders he would go to the Chicago postoflice and buy an order for as many cents as there wen 1 dollars In the first order. He would then tear off the cent margin and paste In the della mark in the raised order. Hanson \vouli not say how many orders ho had altered but the number Is large. It comprises nearly 2,000 volumes of congressional and senatorial documents , con taining all of the state papers of recent years. The volumes are all bound In sheep and con stitute a permanent and valuable addition to the resources of the library.
