Corn followed reluctantly , grtlnlriK Vic ; oats closed iincliunged for May nnd provisions finished with Might declines. Wheat started with u convulsive Jump today. The first bids for May ran nil the way from G7'c ' to Me , with very little sale below G7kc , us compared with u7'ie ' sellers nt the end of yesleiduy'H session. For an hour there wns free itnllzliiB by the gen eral crowds of lonfc-s nnd nn equally wide spread buying by scared shorts nnd some other mysterious Interest , which took the offerings ut such times as the shorts would withdraw , to give the thing a square chance to drop. The price bumped on 57H < ! more than once , nnd strijck up against 5So on nevcnil occasions prior to 12 o'clock. Once near the noon hour tne rrlght of the shorts became rather hystcrlonl , und they could not get enough .Mny whent until they bid Wfic for It. The figures of the day's movement - ment were quit'.1 encouraging to holders. Minneapolis anil Duluth Jcecipts were 151 cars , compared with 2.0 n week ago , nnd 183 on the corret'pondlnK day of last year. Primary receipts nil told were only 162,114 Uu. , compared with 21 , UW bu. ! nt < t year , and the Atlantic port clearances amounted In wheat nnd Hour to 570UOO bu. The cables were linn. Kpports from the country were of reduced acreage nnd poor appearance of wltit r wheat nnd of restriction In the area being sown to cprhiff. In the Ipr-nl pit situation It was observed that Pardrldge was apparently unmoved by the advance. The trading of Ills brokers was not heavy , nnd consisted of modnrute purchases of May on soft spots nnd eorrospomllnir Hales of July on the bultfss. He was culled on heavily for margins by several houses and responded with tilucrlty. margining May wheat up to around C2c or ( So per bu. . It was satct. Closing- cables were firm. The market closed at from CS'ic to OS'lc for Corn wag very quiet , nnd prices prac tically refused to move during the llrst hour or so of the ner-slon , hut later the great strength of the wheat market brought In buying orders , and fluctuations after that were over a much wider range. The openIng - Ing price for May was 45c , and n few pales were made at 4GV-.C. It kept between those prices the most of the llrst half hour , then rose to 4Gc , dropped ugiiln to 40'.c , ad . vanced to from 45c to 43'iic. and closed 1 there , nftcr fluctuating for a time between that nnd 4&c. . . . . There was a good general business trans acted In the market for oats. The main feature wns the changing- from May to June. The result was nn advance of Uo In the price of June , while May closed barely steady and ruled easier principally. Armour sold freely early In the session. The firm ness In wheat and corn governed the fluc tuations In the more remote futures , all of which ended nt nn advance. Mny sold from 28Wo to 28'ic to 28c , up to 28c , and rested nt 28140. July started nt 27 > .ic. sold up to Z7 c , nnd closed Vic higher at that price Provisions were weak early on lower live hog prices , with prospects of going lower than they did. which was prevented by the sustaining- Influence of the wheat market. Near the end It became known that a big demand for caHh product existed nnd that heavy sales had been effected , nnd upon that the market closed with declines of 15c In pork , lOo In lard , nnd V&c In ribs. The receipts today numbered 1,110 cattle , 1,417 hogs and 71 sheep , us against 1,401 cattle , J.ota hogs and no sheep yesterday and 1,131 cattle , 3,825 hogs nnd no sheep on Thursday of last week. CATTLI2 The cattle market got a black eye today , and no mistake about It. For some days there has been a weakness In the niatket and nn Indifference on the part of the buyers which seemed to point to an approaching preaching drop In price * , and today the de cline came good and strong. " Other markets weie all reported as In Very bad shape , and In sympathy with the general decline , the market broke here lOj to 15c. In addition to being lower the trade on beef steers was very dull and the buyers did not appear to care whether they got the cattle or not , even nt the decline. The demand for fat cattle has fallen off. very materially within the lnt few days , due to n decreased con sumption of meats. It Is claimed that the cold storage houses of the packers In all sections ot the country are Jull of fresh meat , which Is moving out very slowly. This condition of the fresh meat market makes the packers very Indifferent buyers at the best. At the same time prices have been pretty high here on fat steers as com pared with other markets. Thus a bunch of tattle sold In Chicago yesterday at ? 5.50 for which $5.63 was paid here. There were six or seven loads of cows nnd heifers In the yards today. The cow mur- kJt ( has been In comparatively better shape than the steer market , but It dirt not escape the decline In prices today. The decline , however , was the most marked on the choice stuff , which has been selling right up to steer prices. One bunch sold nt J4.CO and another nt $4.45. The feeder trade was also lower and dull. The demand wns light , there being few buyers here from the outside. A few cattle changed hands , but the market wus quiet. The > po ( of American toll first reddened by Hie blood ot the revolutionary patriot * Is of thrilling Interest to all lovers ot free dom , writes Arthur M. Barnes In the New doY York Herald. Turn which way you will In the old town ot Lexington , Most. , and you will llnj the souvenir ; of ttlrrltig history , first you naturally stroll around tlio well kept green , embowered In graceful nnd gigan tic elms. Hero It was , on April 19 , 1775 , that a band of sixty provincial * received n volley from SOO ot Pltcalrn's men , and In that early dawn seven ol tticlr number lay lifeless on the trrcen sward , . The common la triangular In shape , and " I ns high above sea level as the top ot Hun ker Hill iiiomimeiit , At the upcx of the triangle a pulpit ot dark granite murks the spot where tlirco village meeting houses have stood. Just back of this Is n promising elm tree planted by General Ornnt at the time of the centen nial of the Kittle. The memorial to tlio victims of the batllo Is , In measure , disappointing for the shaft Is severely pluln , although Improved by ft luxurious growth of Ivy , The Inscription Is it long historical resume of events' , and fer vently patriotic. U etlrrcd the spirits ot l < itayelt(3 and Kosstlth as they paused be fore It. The bodies uf the first slain hcrooa of the revolution were taken from the old cemetery In 1S35 and relntcrrcd within the enclosure. Dr. Holmes hns said : Urecn bp the Braves where her martyrs nro lylnh'1 Shroudless nnd tnmblc3 they panic to their rest , While o'er their ashes the starry fold flylnc Wraps the proud eagle they roused from lil.i neat. On the eastern stdo of the common la a rough boulder which murks the line of the minute men. Upon one side Is carved a mus ket and pcivuler horn , anj beneath arc the i-alm , decisive words of Captain Parker , "Stand your ground , don't fire unless fired upon , but If they mean to have a war , let It begin here. " The Iluckman tavern , which overlooks the common , merits more tlmn a passing glance , for ( It Is the patriarch nmong the veteran buildings of Lexington. This frame structure ) was erected In IG'JO , and the ever welcome vt tablet t : tersely tells us tlmt It was "a rendez vous for minute men , a mark for British bul- lots. " Here It stands , perforated with shot lioles , as though King William's war were still In progress and the nation had not stretched Itself across the continent. A flttliiR companion to the Duckman tavern Is the house of Jonathan Harrington , who waa wounded on the common , but dragged himself to the door and died ut his wife's feet. Something more than mere sentiment has made It possible for these wooden build ings to have outlived the corroding years until the present day , and It Is to be hoped that they may be preserved In their grandeur for many years to come. The old cemetery Is Just back of the Unl- tarlan church , and Is readied by way of a narrow lane. A half hour nxiy be spent hero 'with profit. The stones are for th most part of slate nnd the dates run as far back as 1GDO. Some of the Inscriptions pre serve odd bits of personal history , as this , which bespsaks the generous outlay for apoth ecaries' compounds by kind relatives. Could medicine's healing- balm have saved her breath , This young Kltnlra ne'er tasted dciith , The grave of Captain John Parker , th commander of the minute men , Is marked by a monument more moJern than the ma jority , which the people of Lexington erected In 1SSI. Leaving the green and following1 the old Bedford road a short distancewe reach , an old-fashioned liouso standing with Its end to the road. This Is the old parsonage , and here It was that John Hancock and Samuel Adams were sleeping when aroused by Paul Hevere. The warning- the approach of the British could not mean moro to any one than to these two patriots , whoso fearless utter ances were unpardonable In the- eyes of the British ; Indeed , their capture was supposed to have been been one of the objects of Pltcalrn's march to Concord. The house , al though built In 1698 , Is still occupied and apparently In good condition. Retracing our steps and passing the com mon , the next point of Interest Is the town hall , where many relics- and Interesting statues are to be seen. Further along we next como upon the Identical structure which represented Massachusetts at the Philadel phia centennial In 1S7C. After the centenla ) the building- was taken apart , transported t its present location , put together again and fitted up as a hotel. Continuing In a southerly direction , our attention la next arrested by "the house of Benjamin Merrlam , a mlntito man , whoso family fled at the- approach of the British , when the house was pillaged. " Americans proudly remember the rapid and bloody retreat of the British from Con cord. Had not Earl Percy met the worn out regulars with reinforcements from Boston they would have been forced to surrender Near the spot where Karl Percy planted n field piece to cover the retreat of the Brit. Ish stands a' granite monument In the shape of a cannon. Historically speaking , Lexington Is the town of a day , for the marauding British never came that way again. It has b2en the fate of our country to witness longer and bloodier fights than that which broke tho. stillness of the somber Middlesex town , but one searches In vain for a spot which teaches as much silent history as grand old Lexlng. ton. _ Hnptlut Woman's MimlnnurlvR Officer ) , FORT WAYNE , Ind. , April 18.
