were refusing to lay their taxes on the plea

A communicaton from Dr. Savilie . coimi-

the county authoriies to care for cases of

flout has prepared his first quarterly report.
Several chnnges have been Introduced under
his a mlnlstrton In the method or keeping
the recorls of the department and they
now contain a very complete showIng of the
business of time department.
During the first three months of 1895
there were 120 alarms responed to. Of
these 103 were regular and fifteen were still
alarms. The second alarm and the combIned -
bIned second and third alarms were turned
on co. Eighty-nino of the lives were In
frame , twenty-threo.'ln ' brick bUldings and
two In freight carsistandhl/ on side traels.
In 13 cases the fire was confined to the
poInt of orign : in ' three cases I extended
to two buildings and In only one case to
three bulldimtgs.
The report also desIgnates the manner In
whIch all fires were extingulsimod . Twenty-
four small blazes were extinguished by the
occupants of tIme buIldings before the department -
plrtmnt . arrived. : even were extnguished
by the chomlcal eigiaes without openIng a
hydrant. Time others were extinguished as
follows : Chemical and one hydrant . 16 ;
chemical and , two or more 11)'drnts. 6 : by ,
one hydrant , 23 ; by two or more hydrants , I
8 ; by steamers , ,5 , and by portable chemicals ,
axes and pails . 8.
The causes of fires were dIstrIbuted as follows -

The total value of time buildings Involved
was $5&7,629 : value of contents , $ & 41.10 ;
total , $1,098,739. The losses on buildings
aggregated $33.008 ; on contents , $32,793 ;
total , 65801. The total Insurance was $731-
566 ; Insurnco on -losses . $683.11. leavIng
a loss over Insurance or $17,39.
At these fires five persons were burned
to leath ; three were badly burned , and
twenty-one were rescued by the firemen from
burning buildings . .

Shortly before 1 o'clock yesterday morning
Robert Leach , a member of the Gecon
Infantry ban . committed suicIde by blowing
the entre tOIl or his head off wih a sh.l ; n.
The deed was commited on the SI lS In
front of the band headquarters at Fort
Omaha. The suicIde , vas deliberate and
prlmedlate . Leach had taken one or the
shoe strings out of his shoes. One end he
fastene In an eyelet of his right shoe and
the other to the trigger of ( lie gun. He then'
placed time muzzle or the pun In his mouth
and by pushing out his fee ) discharged the
we3pon. Time entire top part of hIs hea,1 ,
was blown off. Time body was guarded where
I hall fallen unti daylight . when It was
prepared for burial. The funeral will prob-
ably take place this afternoon . with interment -
tement In Forest Lawn cemetery.
What caused Leach to commit the deed is
a mystery. He had Intimated to several of
his friends that he intended to end his life
