schooner from Key West was the Golden

weeks' ago for a cargo of fruIt t , with a crew
of alxtet men , and hall to pass Puerto .
Padre , and may have been the vessel In qiIes
ton , The schooner Louts lastng and
J LIly also sale < for fruit several days ago ,
but neither had sixteen $ men In their crew.
A later rrporl Is to the erEct that the
schooner Irene was fred Into and dismantled
by the Spanish cruiser Infanta Isabohhe.

The news Was brought to this city by a yes-
sl l cngallell In the cattle trade between this
port and the mainland The Irene Is a

sailed for the fish ranch at Punta Gorlla

alarm has been occasioned hy the news.
The latest news from Cuba Is that the I
government has captured a schooner with

several rifles were capturd , hidden away In
fields. Dolores Ale o , a Cuban girl , has basri

NO REPLY YET FROM MADIUD.
WASHINGTON , March l-As for as can
be learned the , State department has not Yet ,
heard elthr from United State Minister
Taylor or from Consul Genrral Williams at
Havana upon the question of the Identity of
the Spanish cruiser w'lcn red upon the
Ahhianca. There Is no question. however ,
of the correctness of the report whIch represents -
sent that the offending craft was 'tho Con e
do Vonandlto , although from the commander's
statement that the steamer upon which he
freli was flying the nrls' flag . there Is
still a possibility that his story refers to another -
other Incident , for It Is hard to conceive that
the stars and stripes could be mistaken for
the British ensh under the cIrcumstances.
of Curse It is i question of fact that can
be , e sly setted by the testImony or the
ofcers and crew of the Atanca whether or
not the colors exhibited were American or' '
British. I Is salt here t lat the mater
really tails to touch tIme main Issue although
It may result In luggIng Great Britain into
I , In defense or the ensign , for the Spanish
cruiser , according to tIme POSItIOn taken by
Secretary Gresham , was bound to accept the
colors displayed In answer to her signal
as establishing the nationality oC the vessel
I begins to appear that our government
Is not disposed to be unduly exacting In tht
mater of a speedy response from the Spanish
government to tie der.lamls preferred through
MinIster Taylor Inasmuch IS the State department -
parlment has been Informed by Mr. Taylor
that the entire Spanish cabinet has resigned
and I Is realized that It I no easy mater ,
oven with the best of intentions , for the
government to treat this subject properly ,
whlo It Is distracted with Internal turmoil.
There 10 reason to believe that there may
bo further Interesting developments In con-
nclon with the Alliance affair.
Information Is eahl to bo at hnnd that a
schooner ' which recently called from Savannah ,
Ga. , after having been watched by the cus-
tOIS ofcers , had on hoard arms and ammnmi-
nlton concealed under n decldoad of lumber.
ler destination Is supposed to have ben Cuba ,
_ and tIme information concerning her Is of
, d such a character that SpanIsh gunboats Ire
now on the watch
Nothing Is Imown here of time reported ac-
I ton of lie Spanish bhlps Infanta Isabel or
Arcedo In firing on American , vessds. There
Is good ground , however , for believing that ,
the ship which sailed from Savannah with i
Cuban arms aboard : wil furnish an actual '
case of dclenlon If she Is overhaul
Careful investigation Is Ilroceedins as 10
the cargo shipped by the Allanca at Colon
allegations lint ( arms were taken abbaTI
under cover or darkness having been made .
Communications hnvo been received In
Washington from Cuba that lie Condo de
Venandlo was the Spanish war ship firing
on the Alhiamica. These advices said that the
later ship was flylngt \ a BrItsh flag.
There Is 10 further doubt as to tIme re- '
celpt by Secretary Gresham or a reSl10ns (
from Spain to his deman , but there is I
reason to believe that the plblhhed reports
have failed to state Homo Important reserva-
tons made by Spain.
.
) Ono part ot Spain's answer may consist
In cling attention 10 n charge that a nun-
ber or Spanish Cubans wro fshing In the
Gulf of Mexico when fred upon by -I UnIted
States revenue cutter , first wih a cannon
ali later with small arms. Time firing Is
alleged 10 Intro occurred twelve miles from
land The Sllanlards were carried to New
Orleans , whicre , It Is said , the United Stales
court for the southern district of Louisiana
released theni Spain has not thus far made
n protest , but may do 10 now that tIme United
States hiss protested against the firing on
the Alliance.
