The election yesterday faIled 10 arouse the
great enthusiasm seen on some previous cc-
easlon of the same kind , exceptIng In one
or two precincts where some local candidates
turned heaven and earth over In the mad
rush for victory. The fact that In three
wards no ward councIlman was to be voted
wares counciman
for and the only candidates were for eoun-
elman.at.large anc an.1 . park commissioner kept
a good many away from the 'ots , and even
In the wards where councilmen were to be
elected a feeling that tle only issue at
stake was thaI of city printing prevented a
great show of enthusiasm The bulk of the
Interest was centered In the Second trc-
cnct of the Fourth ward , where Councilman
White marshaled his forces behInd his barn
nl\l fed them on cheleo stimulants of the
campaign variety , and In the First precinct
of the SIxth , . where Shubet and Nicholson
vied with one another In the effort to make
all cantors eel [ at home.
In the Sixth , varll It became evident early
In the day that the olce or councilman
woulll bC bought by the candidate who had
the nloht boodle and the best crowd of rusl-
lng assistants. A crowd of dlsreputables
stood around the polling place at tIme corer
of Broadway and Twenty.frst all day long.
At Interval they would be taken In charge
by I Shubert capper or a Nicholson capper
al\l be hustled ! away to some point just out
of hearing , where a bJruln would be struck
Then they would be taken Into the polling
place and the capper would often accompany

them Into the building and to a Point wIthin
two feet or the ballot box In his anxiety to
lice hat t the goods \ hlch hall been duly
bought amid paid for were delivered. This
was done repeatedly . In spite of the pro-
visions of the law thaI forbids electioneering
within 100 reel oC the polls.

to his first determination , not to vote until
