GOLD ON TIE SAN JUAN. Major Hanna comes frcm Montezuma county , where ho has been testing various machines , each of which was warranted to be the best machIne invented for 60paratng gold frcm placer 4Irt. After spending a great deal of time In the work says the Denver News Major Hanna has decided to maim a thorough test of the electrical prOC2SS , and has brought with him to Denver n quantity or gravel from the bed of the San Juan river. I the tests are successful a carload of gravel will be brought to the city , and a final result reached In regard t the process. ' : " 1 never got excite over minIng venture " remarked the major , but after years of practical experience along the San Juan river I am convinced that the region will become the greatest gold producing region In the United States. I have (00 ( acres of placer that assas $3 to the cubic yard , and In many spots much higher. The highest amcunt I * , have been able to extract by processes at- tempted on the spot Is GO cents a yard. I have fully tested eight maclimes , but not one of them meet the demand. I the electrIcal process wi do the work there Is no limit to the weaUJ that can bo taken from the placers of the San Juan river. " In the opinion of Major Hnnna the gold Is S contained In small particles of quartz and while It Is chemically free It Is not mechanically - Icaly free' . The successful process requires that the quartz shall be pulverized , and It Is upon this plan that the experiments wIll be made this week In Denver. The visitor states that 100 , to 150 men are . washing the sands of the San Juan river this winte' and ' are realizing $3 to $5 . day for their work. Ordinary hand rockers are used. The sand Is fifteen to twenty feet dee and the river for 100 miles below Durango pre sents an inviting field for men who are will- log tD , labor. Major Hnnna says his faith In ¶ . the San Juan placers increases steadily as ho learns more of the gold value In the sand. GUNNISON PLACERS 001313L16D. . : Quite a little excitement was caused here when It was learned that the Grant brothers ot Salt Lake City had staked every foot of the goldblng sand on Sand and Dear creeks , abut 20 miles from here at the foot < of the Sane do Christo range says a Gun- nison special to the Denver Republican. Thor have been experimenting with this sand at different times for about a year , but have bn' working 10 quietly that It was given Ito or no attention until I few ' days ago , when hey brought In a machine which they said they were going to test , with a view to putting In a big plant should the teat prove satisfactory. This caused quite a number of people to go to the sand banks tQ see the machine work and to stake Bare ground for : themselves ' , when they found to their great surprise that they were too Into , and that not a foot of ground was to bo hnd. The machine being tested was In- vented by , a man named Roth of Salt L1ke. The sand and water Is forced down through a cylinder by a screw to the bottom of a tank partially fled with quIcksilver : It then passes upward through the quicksilver and t washed off by water , whatever gold I In the' sand being retalnel The Inventor stated to your correspondent. the iargestma- chine made of this pattern would run about 200 tons per day at a cost of about 20 qent per ton. One ot , the company stated that he thought the sand would average at lest 60 cena per ton , and probably a good deal more. . I was ale stated that should the test prove satisfactory they would arrange for the putting In of a plant lt once which would cost In the neighborhood of $200,000. I has ben known for a long time that this Band carried a small per cent of' gold but It has always been thought that It would be impossible to work It to advantage with , . available facilitIes. George T. neck of Sheridan Is engaged In nn enterprise which may revolutionize the fuel industry ! ot the country , says the Chey- enne Leader. n Is simply th discovery at an economical method of transforming bl- luminous or Ignite coal Into anthracite. Mr. Deck Is a graduate ef the Troy polytechnic school , and , aside from his technical train- Ing. has a strong practical bent. He Is quite largely interested In the surface coal meas. ' urea In the neighborhood ot Sherlllnn , and this Is what probably turned his attention In the directions indicated. As a preposition I seemed fCasibie to him to cheaply extract certain elements from the bituminous coal and In the resultant mass Interject other lacking chemical elements so as to produce anthracite ceal. Very 11e Is generally IIDown of the methods - ods which he employs. The bituminous coal ns It reaches him Is frst' ground Into a powder - der , after which the moisture and certain proportions of the gases are extracled. The Process Is then reversed and the artificial anthracite comes forth In blocks , which arc as easily handll as brick. As n fuel the new anthracite Is said to bo a complete success - cess , though I has not yet been tried on a very extensIve scale. Mr. Deck Is enlarging - larging his orIginal plant , and It Is believed has received every encouragement tram the lurlngton to persevere In his experiments - periments and bring them to theIr hfhcst 11sslble degree of perteclon , The blessing which would few from such an invention as Mr. Deck IE believed to have measurably perfected are almost beyond cal- culatlen. culaton.TiE WELL OF PIRRI1E. The new strike In the Delden mine recently - centy sold to eastern capital on a basis of $500 . 000 , has . In tile estimation of the Eagle County ( Colo. ) Times , doubled the value of the mine , which Is a large producer of silver - ver lead ores. " RICH MINERAL REGION. "Within a radius of 300 miles of your city to the north and east lies a mineral belt which Is the richest In the world , and I bal no other locality In the aserton , " said a Keystone , Nev. , miner to a reporter of the Los Angles Herald. The site of that camp was active with placer mines In 1850. After the placers were worked over the camp was abandoned for many years. Then came tile rich sliver Ils- eovorles , and now that silver Is at a low ebb attention has again been turned to gold , and they have struck rich quartz veins , tram which the placer gold undoubtedly came. When the Indians of the Coeur d'Alene reservation obtained their money from the government they went to Parmlngton , Wash . ! to spend It , says n Daise City story teller In a' ' discussIon of the Indians' manner lf spending money , which Is reported In tile Stalesman. : Their visit was , at course , antIcipated , and all sorts of schemes were on foot to relieve releve Uncle Sam's wards of their cash as speedily as lossiblc. Tim Indians were on the buy , too , and money was no object when anything thoy'saw slruck their fancy. ' The redskins took a notion to purchase carts , buggies etc. , and In a short time every available vehlcl In town was In their ns- . - m nnn . - - session. There was one old fellow ' who failed to make a purchase , and after the vehicles were all gone a notion that ho , too , must possess some sort of conveyance took strong possession - sian ot hIm. AnythIng from a dog cart up would answer his purpose. After dligent search he learned of a 'vehlclo which , from tile description , completely - pletely overshadowed anything sold before In point of elegance , and possessIon or which would rende" all the other Indians wild wIth jealousy. Ho sought out the owner , who proved to be the town undertaker and opened negotiation for the vehicle. The undertaker soon found the Indian wante to buy hlN hearse. and the thought staggered him for a moment. HavIng - Ing an eye to business , however , and noting the anxiety of Mr. Ieskln , the undertaker sold him thD hearse for a good round sum. The Indian hitched two horses to the lom- her vehicle , and , boosting his squaw and papose into it. trotted oft for home , tile proudest copperface that ever strung a bower or stole a sheep.
