- A specIal meeting of the Board of Educa-
lion will be held next Monday night and If
the Indications are not deceiving a pretty hot
. time will bo cxperlenced. The call sImply
.4l states that Important business will be trans-
- _ acted , but the real purpose of the meeting
Is understood to bo an attempt to raise the
appropriatIon for the expenses of the board
during the comIng year. . .AI the last meeting .
, Ing the stlmate was placed al $400,000 , al-
1 ; 1hough there was considerable opposition on
4 the grounds that the amount was too small.
An amendment was Introduced malelng the
amount $ t oOOO , but II was lost by a vote ,
. ; of 9 to 5. It Is said that this matter will be
reconsidered at the called meeting and thaI
$ OOOO will bo added , making It $ l OOOO.
There will doubtless bo considerable debating -
bating before the question Is decided , although -
S though the members who are urgIng the
Increase say thaI the board will acquiesce
without any great amount of opposition.
They state lI.at some of time members who
, f
, voted against the amendment al the last
meeting are now In favor of the Increase
alill will vote for It.
The Position Is taken thaI $400,000 will
not pay the , running expenses of the schools
. and that lit the end of time year the presenl
deficit will be Increased. The expenses of
last year were In the neighborhood of $415-
? 000 and the members who are In favor of
,
the Inereased approprIation declare thaI the
,
expenses of thIs year will be fully as great.
Of the sum spout last year a large part
& was used In repairs and time board has do.
cidell to spend a very much smaller amount
A , for that purpose , allhough some money will
have to be eXllenlied. It Is thonght , however ,
, ' that tim difference between last year and
this In thaI Item of expense will bo tully
made Ul ! by the cost of carln for an ex-
- -
. pected increase In the number" scholars .
Il Is estimated that there will bo 1.000 more
"L I1Utllls In the schools this year than there
r were last , and the Increased cost for teachIng -
lag them al the present per capita rate
will be nearly or quite $25,000. In addition ,
S It It clahlled that If time board Is enabled to
( obtain J50OOO It will bo able to decrease
j the deficit by a considerable sum
: TIme sentlmenl of the board Is opposed to
. a shorfenlng of the sehool year. Members
. hold that It would bo better to add the Increase -
r crease to the appropriation and keep the
. schoolll In session for ten months than to
'
a leave the appropriation at the present figures
end cut down tIme school year to nine months.
They moreover think they would bo upheld
: : In this l1oRltlon by the cItizens , .as they con-
! Iderl \ nt thl ) chllJr ar8 nol selling 100
runny months : : of school attendance now
. If only HOOOOO Is obtaIned , It Is almosl
: certain thaI a month will be lopped off the
school year , as It Is nol thought that. enough
retrrnchment can bo made In other branches
or tIme llcllartml'lIt to run through the full
rear without adding to the deficit.
