One of the boldcst daylight burglaries that
ever took place In Council Bluffs was perPetrated -
Iletrted at the residence of I. M. Treynor , on
First avenue , near the corer of Sixth street ,
yesterday afternoon between 4:30 : and 5
o'clock I , G. 1. Oblnger , Mrs. Treynor's
fattier , heft the Iiouso at 4:30 : , aCer seeing
that the doors were securely fastened . The
house was empty at the time , but In a few
minutes Irs. I' l . M. McKune opened the
front door with her latch key end went In ,
She went Ip9tairea and sat down at her
writing dek. While she was writing she
sUddenly felt a mysterious Impression that
seine one was behind her , and , turing
around , \ a man standing only I few feet
away. Neither of them ulerCI I word , but
MrR. lcl\lne arose from her chair. Before
she had fairly arisen ho struck her a terrifc
blow on the head [ , just behind the right ear.
Sun fell senseless on the I cor.
About I o'clock Mrs. Treynor returned
luonie Before she reached the house she
noticed that several windows were open.
As soon as she opened the front door she
called Illstalres to see I Mr9. McKune was
there , thinking that possibly something might
be wrong She resolved no response , and ,
beginning a tour through the house , she
found I bun < le done Ul1 carefully In a sheet
lying on the noor of one of the down9talres
hued rooms. She at , once surmlsetl that bur-
glars had ben In the house , and ran out 01
the door to alarm the coachman. lie rushed
In anti went Upstalres , calling town a moment
later for her to come up , that Irs. : lcl\lne
wn dead And It was more than I quarter
of an hour before It was certain that the
coachman's statement was not true. She at
last revived Cram the stunning blow the rob-
ber had dealt her , and In an hour or two
was able to give a coherent account or the
affair.
She described the thief as about five foot
seven Inch 3 In height , medium build , with
black hair and mou9tache and piercing black
ees. lie wore a brown derby hat and brown
cutaway coat , a shirt that soma weeks ] before
had : been white and no collar. She Is certain
that she would know him IC she saw him
again
Upon being opened , the bundle that lay In
the bed rom was founl [ to contain gods
worth Cram $500 to $ G00. There were two
seal skin cloaks , two party dresses , a dress
suit , a silver mirror and silver-backed comb ,
a lot oC fine linen bedding and towel , besIdes
n number oC other articles or value The
upper part of the house had evidently ben
gone through thoroughly before the thief
discovered Mrs. McKune After he hall silenced -
lenced her ho then went down stairs ant
malIc up his pack , putting Into It the contents
of the closes [ anti wardrobC In the lower
part oC the houst' The only thing that was
mIssed was a purse containing $15.
The theory Is that Mrs. Treynor's coming
home frightened the rascal before his work
was dent' . How he got In Is a mystery. The
house Is located In one of the most public 01
places , and It would have been almost Im-
IOsslble for anyone to have gotten 11 at a
window without being seen All the doors
were round locked alter the burglary. Mr.
Treynor Is of the opinion that the fellow got
In during the middle of the day , when house
cleaning was going on , and remained hidden
until ho hOI a chance to do his worll.
At U i'cloe last evening Mrs. McKune
was not feeling as well as earlier In the even-
Ing , and her physician gave orders that she
sholid be watched all nIght. Her head Is
badly contused , but thus skull Is not thought
to have been Cractured.

A report was recently flied with the city
counci by the park commissioners , setting I '
forth the expenses of the commission during
the year just closell. 1 was pigeonholed
anll no action was taken. It contans ! sev-

oral thing of Interst to the public , however ,
among other things I table showing the
names oC the varIous park tracts belonging to
the city , with the number of acre comprised
In each. It may ho n mater of news to a
good many people In Council Bur9 to know
that It has more park lands than any other
cIty In the state. Baylss park contains 3.67
acres anti 1'-llrmoult park M acres These
parks have bEen Improved to I certain cx-
tent and are known and admired nil over
( lie state. Comparatively Ito money has
been' spent upon them , and the scenery Is
very nearly as It has been for several thou-
sand years Cochran park. with its 2.6
acres , 19 now being gradually [ brought Into
shape , and all the rest are unimproved.
Island [ park , on the Burlington , six miles
below the city , contains 102 acres , anti Lake
View park , lear mg lake , H4 acres. Cook
and Graham parks , ,1n , MorllnKslle , contain
three ani six acres , respectively.
The lack of Improvements on most of these
parks Is due to the lack oC lunds. Only 1
null can bo levied per annum , thus givIng
$5,000 wih whIch to beautify the parks.
The office of commIssioner carries wih It
no salary , and It costs just about $ 5OOO a
year to pay the running expelses or the
parks , without making any very large Improvements -
!
provements The plan9 for the coming year
are not yet fully matured , antI will not be
until It 19 l determined how much additional
money will be on hand . At the next meeting
of the commissioners to be heM February 4
n resoluton will probably be adopted asking
the council to submit a proposition to the
voters at the sprrg ! election for an addj
tonal tax levy. The sum of $3,09S was cx-
pendell by the commissioners last year out 01
the general fund , which left thIs fund entirely ]
empty an1 [ with $671 In Inpald warrants out-
standing. Besides ! this , 1,200 'wm borrowed -
rowed front the sinking fund to be used In
Ilcepllg the parks In shape. As soon as
next sprIng's tax comes In this loan will be
pad ! back , the outstanding warrants cashed
and the commission wil have only about
$3,000 to go on , unless an additional tax
levy 19 voted.
The only improvements mentioned by the
park commissioners In their yearly report
are the building of lie road Into alrmount
park at the head oC Tenth avenue , the gradIng -
Ing of the streets around Cochran hark and
the planting of trees and ' shrubs In Cochran
park. All the other money spent was for
merely keeping In shape the , Improvements
already made.
