TENNIS CLUB ON A NEW BASIS Efort to Do Male to Reorganiz the Omaha Organization CLASSIFCATION OF TiE CITY PLAYERS lemben of the Club Arriingo.i In Order of .rrfn/c,1 MerIt Sho"n In 1..A ! elsln' " [ 'IR- Imtlortnnt lectnt to ISo Iehl 8tlrllll ) There Is every promise that the meeting of the t Omaha Lawn Tennis club , which Is called for next Saturday evenIng , will be a lively 0 110. 1 Is the annnal meeting of [ the members Ind there Is n movement on foot 10 effect an ento reorganization of the club. I Is prob- able that n new constitution wilt be presented , and If there Is a large attendance , oS there shoull be , In view of the importance of the me.etn. , there will likely be consIderable of n fight on many of Its Prpvi8ions . The club Is only two years old , but already I i las established itself as tIme leading tennis organ aton between Chicago all the coast. All that ( I needed now Is memberhllJ In the national assocIation to give It officIal slandlng. This Is one of lie ( matters "nlch Is to come before the meeting this week , and there Is ltte l doubt that before the end or this month Omaha wil he n candMate for one of the ofcial tournaments of the National Lawn Tennis associatIon . This was the end In view when the Interstate tournnment project was taken up last year , and alhough a consider- able alount of money was sunk In the ( Ini- hal venture the members of the club gel- orally are of the opInion that the money was wel spent. Alhough there was only n hand- ful of qulshle . players instead of about Ifeel or twenty , as had been hoped . , yet those who vera here went away with .the fixed luten- Oon of coming again , and now It Is understood - stood that the Kansas City club has decided not 10 fix time dale ( of Its open tournament un- Ill time Omahn date Is fixed , the object , of course , being to catch the Omaha overflow. It may be laken for granted that the interstate - slate tournament has come to sla ) ' . i There Is considerable dissatisfaction with i dissatsacton thl way In which the club was managed last year and the members think that the officers , ofcers were party 10 blame for the fact that with a $10 subscription the club Is still In debt. 1 Is admitted that the weather was very largely to blame , but there Is a feeling that the expenditures should have been kept down WAS AN UNLUCKY SEASON , The ill luck began with the city tourna- mont , which was held In June. I lnanclaly this was a success , but on account of the wet weather It was strung out for so Iany days and people who came to the grounds expect- Ing to see some match In which they were Interested were so often disappointed that their ardor cooled down and when the state tournament came along In JUly the result was shown In very small attendances. The state tournament was the greatest failure of the year. There had been a hard light for its location and when Lincoln finally found that they were fighting alone the singles com- petition was retained In Omaha. Lincoln , however , was not satisfied and sent no repre- seutatves to compete for the trophies. Cul- ' Inghom was unable to play on account of the Injury to his hand , which laid him out for the greater part of the season , and altogether the players who took part In It were hardly as numerous nor of ns hIgh L hlgl standing as the Imporlance of the contest de- manded. This fact was probably responsible for the small attendance. Already the club had expended all time money It had taken In during the year. It was yet hoped , however that the inter state tournament would replenish time empted - ted coffers. Some members , however , .ad I became disheartened and for a while there was even a possIbility that the great event would bo abandoned. An exciting meetng ; of the committee was held at which this u point Iwas settled once and for all. Two ad- : ditonal nanios were added to the committee to assist In the special tournament work : and the few das that remaine before the date for the tournament were w 1 spent , but Lm L the work , as usual , fell on a very few men m and Instead or obtaining beforehand enough money to pay for the prizes only $80 was collected. Despite the fact that the club had not the money at hand , It was felt to be enl that the visiting should be only ' _ n _ righ llat uL _ visitng _ players < _ 0 , _ _ _ . _ . . _ m slown tie greaLv' . nmoul , . 01 lospnalny , and the ( result Is that the club Is now several dolars In debt. PROGRESS on REACTION . I all was harmony , however , this would not matter. The question which la really to t be decided at this coming meeting Is whether the club 10 to enter upon an era of retrenchment or whether under better man- agement the movement which was set on Coot last year to make Omaha the leading tennis center of the midwest and place I alongaldo larger cities In time east cannot be 'achieve wihout los of revenue. Tourna- meats hero been made to py In Omala , and Wlll n higher E'landard oC players there Is I lO reason why they cannot be made to pay agln. One Incident of the meeting will be the r etIrement of Mr. C. H. Young , last year's secretary - rotary of the club. Ils noteworthy that ( where there are so many complaints of mismanagement - silent hardly n word Is being saId that Is In any way disparaging to Secretary Young Everyone appears to be satffed that he has been I very efcIent secretary , painstaking In the extreme , and that he has had an unusually - usually hard season , which he has managed well. Who his luccessr will be of course cannot be ' told until the vote Is taken on Saturday night , but Mr. G. E. Hanrstek Is at present tIme leading candidate for the place Ho has taken n deep Interest In the club , amid there Is no doubt that he would be an efcient secretary. A president and executive commitee are also to be elected. The question of time subscription Is likely to he raised again , hut this Is part of the greater quelton of whether ( lie policy of tl polcy I time club Is to be n progrssiye or stationary i one ono.I.ast year's play did not bring out much I fresh ( talent . Roy Austin Improved considerably - ably , and no" ranks probably an easy first among Omahn players. Maybe If ho were In good training CUllngham might be able to defeat him now , but tIme general , opinion among those who know the two appears to b3 In favor of Austin. Cuilngham was un- fortunate In being laid oft for several monlhs last year , and It Is doubtful whether he will over again come up to his standard of the close oC time season of ' 93. 1 II his Inten ton , however , to make an effort this year to regain the chamlJonsllp ( of time state which he lost last seaon by default ' RANKING OF OMAHA pLA YEnS.
