MADItID , Jnn. 3.-To the Editor of The
Dee : Permit me to make n few statcments
In I regard to the condItion of the people In
Perkins county. There have been many erroneous -
roneous reports Ilblshed concerning the I
desttulon of our people. Two are now
caled to mind , one appearing In the Chicago I
Iecord anti the other In the Denver Daly
News , both of which should certainly be
corrected. These reports seem to have been I
made hy the same party , nnd orIginated In I
ono fertile brain. The recldess statement
1a 1 9 made that GOO famIlies hnve applIed for
nld ; that a Mrs. Burns anti two chIldren nenr
LIsbon , In this county , have died from want t
nml exposure.
While we do not claim that there Is no
distress among the people of this county ,
for we are fully aware that there are n
number of famies which have applied for
nsslstance , the statements of the above named
pnpers are absolutely untrue. I would be I
Impossible It I for GOO famIlies to ask for nld , a
there are but 350 famIlies resIding In Perkins -
Idns county. The parties who are snld to
have died from want never resIded In this
county , and moreover no person or per
sons have dIed from such causes.
The facts arc that our county and Hs pea
plo hnvo thus far been able to provIde for
hose who have been mora unfortunate than
others In the loss of crops during the past
two years 'Ve know of no person who ha S
m ade application for aid from the proper' '
officials who has been turned nway. Wo i
were just told by. a Justice of the peace an
overseer of the Poor , who has held the ofce
for four years , thnt he had never been u2ked
for nn order for relief.
