CHICAGO , Dec. 13. Wheat was dull nnd
lower today under discouraging cables ,
larger northwestern receipts and liquida
tion , closing Tic lower for Mny. May corn
closed ' ,4c lower , oats " /Ic lower nnd pro
visions at slight advance * .
Wheat ruled slow and featureless for the
greater purl of the session. Northwestern
receipts were again considerably larger than
on the same day a year ago , and the re
ports were of refreshing rains over a con
siderable area In the southwest. The local
receipts were also bearish , being 40 per
cent larger than expected. The clearances
from the seaboard were generous , but busi
ness was so slack that It bad practically no
effect nnd there was nn easy undertone.
May sold at 59c , and from G9c to G9c ,
held steady for a time , but finally weakened
to CSHc at noon. The market continued very
weak during the last hour , nnd May closed
nt D9c , Closing cables were all weak and
longs got discouraged nnd liquidated freely.
Corn was slow and steady until shortly
before the closing , selling a fraction above
nnd n fraction , below yesterday's close , but
keeping nt near the closing llgure. The
locnl receipts were somewhat larger
than expected nnd Pnrdrldge sold heuvlly ,
but the offerings were readily absorbed and
there was but little reduction. The esti
mate for tomorrow Is small 03 cars but It
did not help much. Mny sold ut from C0c
to Bo-He. The weakness In wheat near the
finish sent prices down and Mny closed at
We.
We.Business
Business In oats was Inclined to be more
nctlve , but prices declined In sympathy with
the wenkntHS In corn. Selling was more
general. May started steady at from 3274C
to 32T4c , sold at 32e , nnd the close showed
the market for May nt from 32 Vies to 325ic.
Hog products were strong and high early
on the fact that hog receipts were 13,0,0
head less than estimated and prices at the
yards were decidedly higher. Shorts were
good buyers , but there wns very little for
sale. Trade.got very dull during the last
hour , and prices went off on nil products.
May poik , lard and ribs each closed ! ilr
higher.

xceptlons the closing prices show nn nil-
niico on the llnal pnlos of yesterday
. uiglnp from _ to 3 % per cent. The vol-
me of buslnesH wns very large , the trans
actions In Sugar being nearly two-thirds of
he aggregate sales. London was a heavy
eller of St. I'aul nt the opening , which tle-
ressed the stock temporarily , but there was
; oed local buying In nil the grangers to
over short contracts , which counteracted
ho Influence of the foreign selling In St.
'Bill.
At the opening a tlrm tone prevailed In the
general market , nnd except for n slight re
action at the end of the lirst quarter of an
lour prices under the leadership of Sugar
ontlnucd to advance. Up to 11:30 : o'clock
'otton Oil common nnd preferred , Min
neapolis & St. Ixjuis preferred , Lake Shore
nnd the grangers were also prominent In the
market. The attack on Sugar checked the
dvnr.clng movem nt not alone In that stock ,
but In thi ! market at large , and speculation
urncd Into the afternoon rather heavy.
Sugar was first to shake oft the depression ,
but after a recovery of 1 % per cent a reac-

ho gain was lost. Lower figures brought
myera to the rescue , and the stock ngnln
ook an. upturn , followed by the rest of the
shares traded In. Sugar fell oft a fraction
luring the early part of the first hour , but
> ecume very strong In the llnal trading and
ouclicd the highest point of the day , mak-
ng a gain of 114 per cent , while the pre-
errcd recorded nil advance of 1 per cent.
The general market wns also In good tone
n the late dealings , nnd closed strong at or
within a small fraction of the- best prices
of the day. The bond market was firm and
noderntely nctlve. A transaction of note
wns the sale of n. block of $100,000 of West
ihoro fours. The trading In that Issue
cached J101.000 , and the total sales of the
lay were ll.Wl.COO.
The Kvenlng Post's London cablegram
says : The markets were good nil around
today , but the activity was still confined to
nines. Americans showed a good tone , but
were Idle , and South Americans were firm
on a further fall In the Arccntlne gold pre-

very much like a Turkish or a Russian bath except that it
costs almost nothing , and that you take it at home , without
any trouble or fuss.

Further Weakening In I'rlco the Feature of

CL/EVKI-iANI ) , Dec. 13. The Iron Trnile
Review this week Buys : A further wealten-
Infr of Iron nnd steel values 1ms tnken place
within the week , nml In some markets the
lowest prices of the year have been touched.
This Is true of bessenicr and northern foun
dry Iron , except at Chicago , where the
marked concessions of some weeks past
were recently withdrawn. While n. Novem
ber nnd December accumulation of Iron has
been looked for , with nn attending fall In
prices , actual transactions have discounted
allowances. liesscmer plfj has sold a low-
as $9.50 In the VJlIty , the equivalent of $10.15
nt Plttsburff. Among makers of bessemer
Iron there Is n caution about entering1 into
low-priced contracts begotten of the coke
strike experience of May nnd June.
Car and locomotive building Is more nctlve ,
and the prospects In these directions are
much more encouraging. In the central
west there Is a fnlr amount of business In
plates nnd angles on ship bulldlnc nnd
bridge contracts. The demand for beams
and channels on architectural account Is
light , but there Is a good deal of figuring
on work that Is to come up next year. In
deed , the chief encouragement In all depart
ments of the Iron and steel trades Is de
rived from the expectation of an expansive
demand ! In the early months of 1895. nnd If
present volume nnd present prices were
taken alone ns the basis of judgment the
opinion would be far from optimistic.

N13W YOHK , Dec. 13. The executive
board of directors of the Tennessee Coal and
Hullroad company met today nnd decided
that no further sales of Iron would be mnilq
until nn advance In prices Is established.
The amount of the advance lias not been
agreed upon. The company now has 172,000
tons of Iron sold ahead.
