THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : WEDNESDAY , UJfiUJflMUEll 12 , 18.M. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Wheat Firmed Up Yesterday and Oloaed a Fraction Higher. SHORTS WERE READY TO BUY LONGS OUT Corn Wm Quiet but Fluctuntloni Were Con fined to n Narrow Iaug ProTlsloni Opened nattier AV'cnlc but Hoou Advanced. CHICAGO , Dec. 11. Liberal export clear ances ami Urndatrect's report of decrease In wheat stocks cast of the Heckles , on the Pacific slope , In Europe and afloat firmed up wheat today and May closed % n higher. May corn closed unchanged , May oats ' , c higher and provisions show little change. Wheat , although opening about ' ,4e lower than It closed yesterday , was much firmer subsequently than had been expected. The Kovcrnmcnt report had apparently been dis counted yesterday , and although rather bearlshly construed , the shorts were ready itnd willing to buy all the wheat the longs were disposed to sell on account of It , al though I'ardrldge was a seller. The com parative strength of the opening was In spite of receipts at Minneapolis numbering 725 cars , against 554 cars on the correspond ing day of last year , and lower foreign mar kets. Another bearish feature of the sta tistical news was shipments from all ex porting countries outside of the United States and Canada last week of wheat and flour to the amount of 5,712,000 bu. An ad vance under such circumstances was rather a surprise to the trade , but the opening purchases were made at the lowest prices of the day , May selling at from 69c to C9V4c , very little of It , however , at 6Sc. U Improved until , at about 12 o'clock , It had got up to 69c. Kxport clearances from New York amounted to 113,000 bu. of wheat and 70,000 bbls. of flour. The prices got n further slight hoist and the bulls had additional re assurance when Hrailstreet's reported a de crease * In wheat stocks cast of the Hackles of 314.00U bu. , a decrease on the 1'aclllc slope of 975,000 bu. and a decrease In Kurope and alloat of 4GG,000 bu , Cables also Improved In tone as the session progressed. The mar ket closed llrm nt B9e for May. The corn market was quiet , but fluctua tions were confined to a narrow range. The receipts were 386 cars , against 400 esti mated , and only 200 cars are expected on to morrow. The withdrawals from store were 03,000 bu , New York reports some Inquiry for export and six boat loads placed today. The Iowa state report cullqil the total pro duction In that state this year 80,807,000 bu. , or about 6,000,000 bu. less than the govern ment estimate. The price of May was 4D-'Hc at the opening and 49c bid at the- close , with DOc paid for a little during the day. The market for oats showed very little activity. The firmer feeling still existed , In fluenced by a like situation In corn. May started at 32c , sold at 32c and closed at 32Sc. The provision market opened rather weak In consequence of the slight drop In wheat nt the start , but soon firmed up again when the wheat market gave It the encouragement of advancing prices. In the end , compared with yesterday's closing prices , pork shows no change , lard Is 2c higher and ribs 5c higher for January and 2Vic for May. While almonds , filberts nnd Ilrnzll nuts have shown nn easier tendency of late , says the New vork Journal of Commerce , walnuts have been maintained In strong position , and the Indica tions not only favor a firm market during the remainder of the holiday period , hut prices dur ing the coming year are expected to be sustained at n point fully abreast , if not above , present selling limits. France nnd Italy are the chief sources of supply In Europe , and In both of these countries the crops this year were considerably below the average , nnd the result has been that short supplies have already develpond nnd cables advise advancing markets for the unsold portion that remains. The average crop of the favorite Grenoble section In France la placed nt about 13.COO bales , but owing to the unfavorable weather the past season the yclld did not exceed 5,000 or C.COO bnles. and of this quantity the greater portion has been marketed , the latest Information received advising the available stock to be only 2CO bnles , for which extreme prices arc demanded. The crop of "French , " Influenced by the same unfavorable weather conditions , also developed a heavy shortage , estimates of quantity gathered being placed to not exceed 50 per cent of nn average. The crop of Naples this season also showed a heavy dellclency , and In anticipa tion of a scarcity speculative operations have been ventured upon abroad , and the remaining slock there brougnt under close control for the purpose of realizing higher pi Ices as the season advances and the requirements of consumers be come urgent. This class of stock stands next to Grenoble 1n the estimation of our Importers , as the goods are of uniform quality nnd can be car ried for any reasonable time without fear of de preciation. The Importations this season have aggregated 7.981 cases and 1,505 bbls. , the greater portion ot whlbh quantity has already been mar keted. The remaining stock Is under excellent control , the holders confidently anticipating a material rise when the spring opens and n sound , sweet nut Is desired. The California crop the past season has been placed nt about 250 cars , or a quantity say equivalent to 3,730,000 Ibs. The weather on the Pacific coast during the growing season was wet and unfavorable nnd the quality of the crop In consequence fell far below ex pectations , with the result that when deliveries upon contract were tendered In many Instances the goods were rejected upon the ground that they could not be classed as good merchantable , a considerable quantity being dark In color , with some Indications of mould. Disappointed , though not discouraged , the growers In California pro pose making n strong bid for the walnut trade , nnd hope by preseverance to eventually place upon the market a class of stock that will rank with the best. Los Angeles county Is the section devoted to the nut of commerce , and there the best endeavors are being put forth to cultivate nn article that will command the attention nnd appreciation of consumers. The walnuts to this time have been carefully prepared nnd graded as to size , and had weather conditions been favorable - vorablo the past season the fruit would have been placed upon the market nnd criticism In vited. Most of the large growers there are In and working under the rules of nn association , which has for Its object the Improvement in quality of goods produced and protection to mem bers from disastrous competition. The workings of the association have Indeed proved a benefit thus far , nnd even better results are counted upon for the future. In a word , the walnut mar ket Is today In excellent shape , with the Indi cations painting to well sustained , Is not higher , values as the setisoi progresses. Speculation In Securities Wns Dull nml Un interesting Yeiterclnr. NEW YOIUC , Deo. ll.-Speculntlon on the Hock exchange today was dull nnd unln- cresting , nnd the volume of business shows a heavy decrease from that of the past fen- lays. The effect of the circular Issued by Jrexel , Morgan & Co , to the Krle bond- loldcrs was favorable to the stock , Inas much as It disproved the truth of the ru mors that the firm had abandoned the re organization altogether , whereas It merely iroposed to lay It nslde temt > orarlly In the lope of better times. An advance of 1 per cent was made In the stock , which wns maintained to the close. The Improvement vas materially aided by good buying for the London' account. The market opened gener ally firm nnd a fraction higher , except for Sugar nnd Distilling , which lost % per cent and % per cent respectively. Sugar , how ever , although much less active than usual , quickly rallied 1U per cent. A raid on the stock brought about a reaction of 1 per cent. Most of the other shares dealt In were also weak , and the tendency of prices wns downward until near noon. After mid day trading became quieter , but the tone pf the market wns firmer , closing In the main at an advance on the final figures of yester day. Consolidated Gas nnd Krle advanced I per cent. General Klectrlc and lhe > gran gers from 'A to % per cent , the latter In St. 1'aul and Northwestern. There were a few lecllncs on the day , Including Cotton Oil , 2'/t per cent ; Cotton Oil preferred , 1 per cent , nnd Denver & Illo Grande preferred % per cent. Sugar fluctuated within a limit of L % per cent. At the close the speculation was active and la food tone. There was a yjj Vcspectablo supply of cattle' and sheep on sale toiliiy. but for sonic unaccountable reBSdn hog receipts were away below general expectations. Several hundred more cattle arrived today than were here on Inst Tuesday , and the jcncral Quality of the offerings wiis some mprovement over yesterday. The demand , liowevrr , was of the name unsatisfactory character , and the market slow , with prices weak to a shade lower than Monday all around. Both killers and shippers appeared to bo after the tidy , fat beeves , but heavy cattle , whether rough or prime , were neg lected , and the lighter , half-fatted stock met with no better demand. The movement was on the dull and dragging order throughout , and while prices were not a great deal lower on any class of stock the general tone to the trade was decidedly weak. The market for butchers' and canncrs' stock was In about the same condition , only the range was wider , poor to prlnie cows and heifers selling at from Jl to $4. Veal calves were slow sellers at inchanjeJ prices. Knl bulls , stags , etc. . sold strong , but thin rough stock ruled dull and weak. A liberal volume' of business was trans acted In etockers and feeders , and on the basis of fully steady prices. 'Stlllers were not buying as freely as usual , but there was enough Inquiry from regular dealers and country buyers to absorb everything offered In good shape , and the tone to the market was strong. Good to choice feeders arc quotable at from $2.80 to $3.33 , fair to good at from $2.36 to $2.75 , and common grades from $2.25 down. Representative sales : DRESSED BEEF. No. Av. I'r. No. .Av. I'r. The cattle market was dull and generally weak. The receipts were small , but there were many stale cattle and sellers were required to shade prices. Compared with last Friday's prices there I ft n decline of from 15c to 23c. There was trade nt prices rang ing from $1.25 for Inferior cows to $6.33 for Christmas steers. Sales were principally at from $2 to $2.70 for butchers' stuff , and from $3.60 to $1.15 for steers. There was u light run of hogs today , and the arrivals since Saturday have been 16,000 head less than for the fame time a week ago , but that circumstance did not seem to have any Influence with the buyets. Choice-heavy weights were sal able around the opening nt from $4.55 to 51.CO , while later $4.55 was an outside quotation. For assorted light weights $4.25 was practically the top , and $4.50 took the best medium weights. I'rom those figures sales varied down to from 11.15 to $4.20 for common heavy , and to from $3.90 to $4 for common light. The bullc of the stuff was weighed nt from $1.20 to $1.50. In sheep , as In other branches of the live stock market , there was weakness. Supplies are still coming forward altogether too freely , lluyers took what stuff they wanted today nt a reduction from yesterday's prices of lOc paying from J1.25 lo $3.15 for poor to choice sheep , and $2 to $4 for lambs of corresponding quality. From $2.25 to $2.75 bought most of the sheep , and sales of lambs were largely nt from $3.25 to $3.85. Receipts : Cattle , 6.000 head : calves , 300 head ; hogs , 26,000 head ; sheep , 13,000 head.
