-5 5p < * * ' "Hap > * * ' * ' % ' nr I THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : SFSTDAY , DECEMBER 9 , 189 CONDITION OF OMAHA'S TRADE Business Hot Quito Up to the llecord o Tomer Weeks. COLLECTIONS AS A RULE VERY FAIR Wenther Not Pleinlnc ; to tlio Men AMio HuTo % Vlutor Goods to Sell Tlio llolldiiy Trudo FraniUcs to be Fairly Hatlsfnctory. The energies of salesmen and clerks at the local jobbing houses have not been taxed very severely during the past week. The number of buyers arriving on the mnr- kct hns not been large , while mall orders liave been none lee numerous. The best that could bo sold of business Is that It lias be n only fair during the six days past. The dry goods people have had their rush nnd the heavy trade Is over for the year. This Is thu season when the dry goods Job bers have , as a rule , little to do aside from taking stock. With severe and stormy weather there would , without doubt , be n demand for some lines of winter goods to nil In stocks In the country , but so far this season there has been nothing In the weather to stimulate business. The boot nnd shoe trade would also be aided very materially by stormy weather. While the present very agreeable weather continues such goods as rubber boots nnd shoes are quite likely to remain on the shelves of the retail merchant , nnd no additional or ders need bu looked for by the Jobber until there Is some prospect of retail stocks being broken. Nothing short of an absolute scarcity of money could prevent a large business In the dry goods line , as prices are such as to stimulate free buying on the part of con sumers. It Is safe to say that there never hus been a time In the history of this coun try when people could clothe themselves more cheaply than now. There has been ti decline In values Muring the past year to 11 remnrUable extent , and consumers have received the benefit. The American \ \ eel nnd Cotton. Heporter says that this hns been a EO-cent season on heavy underwear : that Is , the goods selling at retail at BO cents have had the call , and the quality of some of the garments that have been sold imd nro still obtainable at that price , Is Homcthlng remarkable. Hut a few years ago the trade would have stood amazed at the qualityof the garment now offered to retail at that figure. Such a bargain , would have been pronounced among the Impossi bilities of this generation. The same Is true with reference to misses' and men's hosiery , the quality of the black goodsoffered to the trade to retail at 25 cents per pair far sur passing that of any previous season. _ Thu season has been a more profitable one to the retailer than to the Jobber or manufacturer. As low as retail prices have been It Is doubtful If they are , as a rule , as proportionately low as the prices re- c&lved at first hands. Thus the retailer who not long ago , would not have objected strenuously to paying $2.50 for hosiery to sell at J3 per dozen , today expects to pay not more than $2. or at most J2.25 , for goods to sell nt the same price. He sells a much better stocking1 at the rate of $3 per dozen than he did a few years ago , but he pays less for that priced hosiery than he did. Consequently his profit Is larger. Omaha grocery Jobbers report a moderate trade the past week. The penerally favor able character of the grocery trade has been a source of surprise to jobbers , who did not expect It to hold up as well as It has. In view of the unfavorable trade conditions prevailing In the country. During the com ing week there ought to be a gcod , active demand : for fancy groceries for the holiday trade. The decline In sugars came rather unexpectedly nt a time when the refineries were reported to be closing down. Local jobbers look upon the closing of the re fineries as a natural consequence of the sugar situation. It Is claimed that the con sumption has been materially Teduced by the hard times , and that Jtocks are becom ing very burdensome. The production of beet sugar has been unusually large In Eu rope the past season. The jobbers of hardware report a fall- movement of goods In thftlr line. There have been a good mlxny orders arriving. In fact , 1 nb'Ut as many as would be expected nt thin season. The great trouble Is that the trndo la almost.entirely of n-hand. to mouth , -character * The retajl merchants of the country are only buying as they require the goods , and then only enough to fill the Immediate demands of their customers. As n result there are a great many very small orders which require as much time and at tention ns larger orders , while the aggregate volume cf business remains rather small. While there Is every reason for believing that buyers will practice a good deal of economy In making their holiday purchases dealers as a rule are anticipating a fair movement of holiday goods. The holiday season Is always bound to be remembered by a great many people , even If they are forced to practice economy In something that is more In the nature of a necessity. While the coming of the new year Is still some little distance off. jobbers are com mencing to look forward to Its arrival , and not a few are speculating ns to what Is In store for them In the future. Just at the present time this looking Into the future Is rot a very pleasant occupation , ns there does not appear to be very much of encour agement In It for the members of the trade. As a rule merchants are predicting a very quiet January , while some go even farther and declare that they cannot discover any reason for expecting other than a dull trade until the coming cf another crop. This means several months of a hand to mouth trade. The Jobbers of Omaha are prepared to dp nil that thev can to make up for the lack of business In their near-by territory by reaching out Into new fields. How suc l\ cessful they will be remains to be seen. AS DUN SKK9 IP. ' Itctnll Trndo Hull , but on the Moml Cnr- rrnry Question Discussed. Mr. W. II. Hoberson , Omaha manager of R. Q. Dun & Co. , speaking of trade for the week , says : "Trade continues dull In retail circles , al though a marked Improvement Is reported among- clothing houses and * In somd of the dry goods stores. In wholesale circles the week his been rather BOod , considering the Boason cf the year , though there Is little to boast of , and the usual ante-Christmas 1 ict'.vl y Is not exper'enced. Novemb r trale , us predicted last week , shown an aggregate equal to November of a year ago. "Perhaps the most unexpected feature ol local trade Is the receipts ut the stock yards. Kven the more sanpulne commission men and packers were of the opinion that .the cattle nnd hogs In the country would be shipped In early , nnd that by this time the supply wbulil be very short. The contrary UaH been- the fact , and during this week and last receipts ut all stock centers have ) jcen very large. JIow much longer ship ments can continue before the supply will lie exhausted remains to be seen. "Among bankers the president's message nnd the Carlisle scheme for a new system of currency Is the principal theme of dis cussion , with opinions dlltertng very widely among our most conservative men. Every body concedes that cur currency should be more elastic , but there Is a disposition tc deprecate any congressional action In thai line at this time. While the subject Is In teresting ns a topic of conversation , and much Instruction cai bi obtained by a stuJy of the various plans proposed. It Is safe tc assert that the present congress will ad- J urn without adopting any plan for a ma terial modtllcatlon of the existing binklne system. Personally , I nm free to confess that I cannot bring myself to Secretary Carlisle' ) ) views , and would regard with es pecial suspicion his plan for a state cur rency. "Thre Is a little unlen depot ta k again , bill to all appearances It Is talk without a snecla purpose. I was somewhat struck with th < views of ouo of cur principal Jobbers the other day. when he argued that two or ever three depots would be better for the city ni largo than n single central station Intc which all the passenger business of th < city la concentrated. Ills theory is that UK benefits to the community of a transfer sys tem and of two or three local tralllc cen ters Is a complete offset to the convenient which the central station Is for the travel I ni ! public. My Impression In , however , foi u city of the Mzo of Omaha a handsome cen tral union ntutlou would be an ornament an advertisement , a convenience nnd a posl tlve bencllt to all concerned. "Reports from the east Indicate that Inv provement In the commercial conditions 1 : very slight , and the most conservative bust Tiecs men now agree that the date for t marked recovery In trade must be set pasi the first of the year at least. In Omalu it Is to be expected that conditions will re. main unsatisfactory until prospects for t KOOA crop stimulate the people to purchase ] In anticipation of harvest. "It was u fortunate thing for Omaha tha the Hillings extension of the llurllngton wo. ; completed this fall. With bad crops In Iow < nnd Nebraska Omaha Jobbers would hay experienced a very serious loss of trade h i not new territory been opened to them li one way and another. This Hillings llni penetrates a section which can exchangi cattle for goods and thus benefit our stocl yard and packing Industries und at thi panic time brace up trade , ln the wholesali dlutrlcta. The excursion to Montana of i party of representative wholesale men can not prove olhcrv/Ue than advanlageouii to the trade nnd Interests of the city. It striken me that our jobbers should seize upon every opportunity to cultivate an acquaintance In all the territory which can be served from this . " city. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ SNOW , cuimcu fc co.'s VIRWS. Itetalt Dealers Inclined to force a Deferred Holiday Trade from Now On. Albert Andrlano , local superintendent for Snow , Church & Co. ' Mercantile Agency , writes : "Owingto the lateness of the Reason some of the larger retail establishments have deferred their usual cpenlng display up to the present. This , and the approachIng - Ing holidays , Is the cause of much active reparation In retail circles. "During the next few weeks local dealers 111 be very busy , nnd It Is to be hoped that IB season will lie a profitable one. Borne f the displays are very line , nnd It Is sur- rlslng to note the richness and complete- ess of stocks following on the dull busl- ess of the pa&t few weeks. Omaha mer- lants poem determined to force trade , nnd very Inducement of price , quality and as- ortment Is held out to tempt the public , "It gives me particular pleasure to note ils spirit of enterprise. It Is n good ex- mple nnd servesto encourage every busl- ess man who cornea In contact with It. n wholesale lines there Is little worthy of ote. The activity In retail circles char- cterlstlc of this period Is of Itself the ause of a certain falling ; off In jobbing radc. Dealers are too busy selling to think f placing orders and confine their purchases o the Immediate necessities of the trade. "The extremely dry weather which con- nues to prevail Is the cause of serious con- ern throughout the winter wheat belt , here Is much fear that this crop will uffer a heavy shrinkage. No extensive dam- go has been done as yet , nnd it Is to beeped oped that a heavy rain or snow full will ccur before the ground freezes up. "Tho report of the stole banking board nakes a remnrjtably good showing for Ne- raskn. Of the seventy-three banks which ave failed during the past two years , all ut nineteen voluntarily retired from busl- ess , and less than that number will be nable to pay 100 cents on the dollar. This pplies only to state banks , of which there ro BOO now In existence In this state. After ucli a siege of financial disaster as has wept over this country In the last two ears , this Is certainly a remarkable record , 'ho withdrawal of gold from the United talcs' treasury Is agnln causing uneasiness , -omlns so soon after the recent bond Issue , his Is of Itself an indication of the weak- ess of the present currency system. 'The urrency laws of this country are a con glomeration of emergency measures , ' or vords to that effect. Is a recent Utterance of Comptroller Kckles , which best expresses he exact condition of affairs. A revision f the financial b'ystem of the country Is the great question which Is now In the minds f the business public. The recent bond ssue has no doubt resulted In n feeling of onlldence , but the almost Immediate re- urrence of a feeling of uncertainty In cer- aln quarters should stimulate congress to he revision of existing laws and the pas- age of measures assuring a fixed financial lollcy. Dec. 8.-The Brain markets were very weak. Wheat closed with a loss f % c per bu. , and corn for May Is also % c ower. Data weakened to a similar extent and provisions are unchanged. The mojor- ty of the traders look for an Increase of ,000,000 bu. In the visible suply , and that vas largely responsible for the decline In wheat , the other markets following. Wheat was very weak at the start at. Vie under esterday's closing prices. The cable notes were against It. The northwestern receipts maintained their previous proportionate In crease over those of the year before , and he aggregate of the primary markets was as large as last year , and compared with shipments from the same were not SUB- icstlve of any tendency toward the reduc- lon of the visible supply. The damage to ho Argentine wheat crop was again stoutly disputed , and the fact that offers of Argentine wheat for forward ship ment were reported to bo getting quite urgent In Liverpool and London was akoti as confirmation of the re- > ort that many of the statements of damage .0 the crop had been greatly exaggerated. The bullish Items In the day's news were lot unimportant , but a still growing visible supply and the bearish Hems already enum erated were too much for the sorely tried lulls. Among other matters to be added to the list on the bear side was the statement that the sales for Kngllsh account made today In New York and Chicago were un doubtedly against purchases of Argentine wheat to arrive. May wheat opened at Gfl&c and D9o to 69'fcc , sold off to 59c , with a sale at from 59V4C to 69c. It recovered to 59c , and closed with sellers at 59HC. Hecelpts of corn were over the estimates , and withdrawals from stores were only 51- 000 bu. That and predictions of colder , fair weather caused a pressure of sales In De cember and January delivery , which weak ened those months and also May to a lesser extent. Compared with yesterday's closing prices , December Is Ic lower , January and May % c lower. There was no change for- the better In the oats market as regards activity. Fluc tuations were governed entirely by corn. May closed at 32&c bid. The range during the day was from 32ic to the closing price.
