'A car attached to an eastbouml special w hi oil passed through last evening was loaded with a small band of antelope , says the Laramlo Republican. The unusual feature connected with the consignment was that the greater portion of the animals were youngsters , probably 2 months old. They were captured In tne northern part of the state , and were enroute to New Hampshire , where they will be turned loose In the most famous game park In the country , If not In the world , now the sole property of the pres ident of the Long Island railroad. Mr. Corbln , for whom , the animals were purchased , Is the owner of what Is now ac- knowjedged to bo the greatest game park In the country. Among the preserves are a number of Wyoming elk , shipped by Colonel William Root of this city , about three years ago. These are- said to have flourished splen didly , as , In fact , have all other animals taken from the Koclty mountains , save the antelope. Mr. Buckingham , who was In charge of the car , has been In Mr. Corbln's service for the past two years and gave an Interesting ac count of what Is a rival to the Yellowstone National park In n small way. He stated that Mr , Corbln started In seven years ago by fencing In 5,000 nrces of forest land In New Hampshire , Since then ho lias been gradually buying up moro ground and adding to It , until at the present time ho has nearly 30,000 acres Inclosed with barbed wire fences twelve feet high. Five years ago Mr. Corbln started In the animal business by turning Into his park 120 deer , 150 elk , twenty moose , thirty antelope , fifteen wild boars , about twenty buffaloes and a few reindeer. The reindeer and the ante lope were the only animals that failed to thrive , and the Increase In some of the oilier species has been marvelous. It Is estimated that the deer and elk now number 1,000 head , the wild boars 350 and the buffaloes sixty head. Mr. Buckingham stated that his spe cial charge are the buffaloes. During the winter the buffaloes are handled like cattle and fed In corrals. The other animals are proving telf-sustalnlns the year round. Thli year the park will be stocked with Rocky mountain sheep. A rather curious ex periment which will bo tried this season will bo an attempt to dross the oik with a herd of European red deer. If successful , the result will bo a magnificent animal. The only large animals which Mr. Corbln liai Indulged In the sport of shooting have been a few particularly ferocloui stags and same or tbo wild boai4u . " Enclosed with the letter thcro Is a con fidential circular purporting to como from the grand Icdgo of the order , In which Is printed portions of the Slocumb , after which follows this comment upon the liabilities of the liquor dealer : THINK THE LAW BURDENSOME. "Ono of the peculiar hardships of this sec tion Is that a dealer who only tells ono glass to a man Is equally liable with the man wha Uj makes him drunk If any dninag : results from him getting In that condition. Our supreme courts have uniformly placed this construc tion upon the law and have aUo held that the wife can recover from the saloon keeper the money that her husband spends for liquor. As a matter of fact. It Is hard to tell to what extent the courts may go , and It Is becoming so that , Instead of law afford ing any protection to our business , after tak ing our money and giving us the right to do business , It makes It Impossible for us to carry It on with cither safety or profit. i "Tho law Is aUo burdensome In this , thai ) although a majority of the people may sign a petition praying that a license bo granted , It Is In the power of one man , by filing a remonstrance , to prevent the Issuance of a license. " i The order Is a secret one and In the con- fldentlal circular the secretary states that ho denies the right of the law to levy a tax upon one c'ass of business for the pur pose of defraying the expenses of any state government or the expenses of any munici pality. In addition to this the secretary states that he demands that the system of taxation be based upon equitable grounds without discriminating In favor of one class. Men In this city who havs looked Into the matter declare that they are almost certain that this Is a scheme gotten up In the In terest of a legislative lobby and that the purpose. Is to gather In nil of the saloon and liquor men , assess them and thus make them instrumental In maintaining these workers ] at Lincoln during the coming winter. WILL LET WELL ENOUGH ALONE. They can see no reason why a special rate should bo made to them It this is a Icgltl- mate enterprise , nor can thsy see any reason I why they should take a medical examina tion. The plan Is alleged to have originated with John C , Allen , secretary of state of Ne braska. He explalnej his Ideas to a number of persons/ some months ago , and they thought so well of them that they went to Chicago and organized , leaving him out of the deal. The headquarters were located at South. Ilcnd , 1ml. , but the scheme has not been very successful , and now the organizers ara reeking to Interest new men and capital. A1 man has been here from Chicago contultlng with Allen , and ho has agreed to attend a meeting In that city osaSay this week to see If something can bo done to srrmulatq the enterprise. Gcorgs Stcrnsdorff was In the city yesterday , and ho had been somewhat Interested In the scheme In the past. He said that the general under- stlndlng was that this association was ta as 1st the saloon keepers of other states to secure the repeal of some of the laws which tlidy allege are unjust to liquor dealers. Ona of the things that they hope to overcome In this state Is the law which makes _ a saloon man secure the signatures of a ma < jorlty of the freeholders In his ward before ho can apply for a IJcenso , and It only re quires the sustaining of one remonstrance to offset all of these signatures. The saloon keepers claim that this gives any ono who may have personal grievance against then1 ! a splendid chance to vent his spite upon them In a business way. The general sentiment among the leading saloon men of Omaha Is that th ? SlocumH liquor law la an excellent one , and for every , man who thinks the tax Is too high , tw'b are In favor of making It even higher In ' order to shut out the places where the buma f'v' and loafers are allowed to congregate. Most of the saloon keepers are opposed to f'v'i any organization of their business for polItU cal purposes , claiming that It would antag * i onlze a liberal class of people who are o ; posed to prohibition as long as the inlooi keep In their proper spfie'.e. The C'rur's Footnote * . . . The annotations which the late czar was In the habit of jotting down In the margin of documents that were tent for his Inspection have sometimes brought despair Into tna hearts of the highest Russian cfllclals. On one occasion , after reading a very lengthy report from a certain high-placed functionary , ' the czar seized his pencil and wrote , "What a fool ! " The ofllclal , on having the document , returned to him , was exceedingly sick at heart. The report would have to be placet ! In the archives , and his majesty's oplnloti would possibly follow him Into history ! Ha therefore received to petition the czar to bo merciful enough to rovlio his somewhat rigor * ous "appreciation" of lila servant , Alex n < der III had a hearty laugh on reading the petition. Then , seizing the report , he effaced the offending words , and Instead wrote be * neath them , "What a philosopher ! " J. > i A Mont , nioltrr.
