COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL
After a Weak Session the Wheat Market
Oloscd Higher ,
BEARS IN EVIDENCE AT THE OPENING
Corn Was Strong Early and Lnto with
Fluctuations During tlio Middle of
the Hey Stocks nnd
Ilonili.
CHICAGO , Dec. 6.-Aftcr a weak session
the wheat market braced up near the finish
ami , helped by report * of henvy export busi
ness , closed ftc higher. May corn gained
Vie , May oats HO and provisions closed
slightly higher.
The wheat market opened weak on the
successful efforts of the licurs to Impress
the crowd with a bearish view of the gov
ernment report. Thoman'B report In the
Cincinnati Pride Current was another wealt-
enlnff factor , representing as It did that the
acreage of fall wheat this year was In
creased 1.6 per cent , and Its condition 91.7 ,
against 01.5 a year ago. The Minneapolis
nnd Duluth receipts were asulnst the mar
ket as usual , numbering " 23 cars , compared
with 499 a year ngo. Cables were easier.
May , which til the close yesterday was
from COc to COVdc , started at from C0 4e to
C0'/4c. ' It sold off to 59c. recovered to CWsc
nnd then declined to 50-4c , with a sale of
C.COO bu. a low as DSlie. Then came strong
closing cables from London and reports of
another big day's cash business at the Kca-
board , the latter throwing discredit upon
earlier reports from New York that for
eigners were reselling whom previously
bought and trying to relet the freight room
they had engaged. The market began to
harden on the latter news , and about live
minuted from the close had advanced to
C014c. and that was still the trading price
at the end of the session.
Corn was strong at the opening nnd strong
later. May opened at 4D5'8c , sold pparlngly
nt from 4aV4c to 49c , then up to IWVtc. It
reacted to 49o and closed at 'Jc. Receipts
were 291 cars , Instead of 200 cars , us esti
mated , but only 12 earn graded contract
out of today's receipts , and 237,000 bu. were
withdrawn from store. Vessels were char
tered today for 215,000 bu. At country Bta-
tlons In Iowa corn Is selling at from COc to
Me per bu. , nnd Allnnconolla Is trying
attract corn by I lUtllng 48',4o for It. The i
board reported 5 boat loads taken for c.i-
port today , "
In oats an extremely dull session w
passed. Few sales were effected. May
started at 32c , sold at froiu S214c to 32e ,
up to 32c nnd closed with Bellcrs nt 32-ftc
for May. Fluctuations were In sympathy
with corn.
The provision market broke n little early
on the heavy run of hogs , 51,000 head being
reported received. The strength In corn nnd
wheat caused a revival of confidence , nv.i\
In the end prices were u. little higher than
on the day before. May pork closed 7'/.e
higher nnd ribs 2',4o higher for January and
He higher for May. May lard closed Cu
higher.

Sugar Speculator * Lett Ip Uncertainty for
'
An'otiier l ) y.
NEW YORK , -Dec. 6. The promised state
ment of the directors ofthe American Sugar
Ileflnlnp company was not forthcoming
today , but Instead came the announcement
that Its publication had been deferred until
tomorrow , owing to the fact that It wns not
completed. It Is understood that the docu
ment will endeavor to explain wherein the
now tariff IB Inimical to American sugar re
fining Interests nnd will attempt to show
that rlnco the present sugar schedule went
Into force the trust refineries have been
operated without profit or nt n loss. The
delay gives another day to the Insiders In
which to make merry with the street as they
did today , to swing the sugar plum from
one hand to the other nnd up nnd down , as
the mood takes them. The trading In the
stock wns on very nearly the same scale
as on yesterday , the sales being only 15,009
shnres less.
There \vns great excitement In the sugar
pool nt the opening and Bales were made nt
nbout the name time nt Mt4 to 80 , the latter
being an advance of IVft per cent on the
closing figures of yesterday , nnd this wns
the highest point touched during the day.
In the first fifteen minutes CO.OOO shares
changed hands , and nt noon the sales had
reached 107,500 shares , the total for the day
being 153,200 shares. The clique of Insiders
controlled the market , nnd If It was their
desire to shake out the stock of other
holders they succeeded admirably , occa
sionally giving encouragement to buyers by
letting the price move up several points ,
with the Invariable result that a quick re
action followed , which brought the stock
down to a still lower level. The low point
of the day , 86 % , was reached nt about de
livery hour. A recovery of % per cent fol
lowed , with a reaction of % per cent nt the
close , making the loss on the day 2 % per
cent. The preferred Is down Hi per cent.
The grangers were dealt In moderately nnd
were fairly well held , making gains on the
day of H to % per cent , the latter In IJur-
llngton. The general market was Irregular
and unsettled during the greater part of the
day , but closed fairly firm , with a majority
of the losses made up nt the close.
The bond market was held firmly In the
enrly part of the day , but later became
easier. Atchlson 4s were most prominent
In the dealings and figured for $138,003 out
of a total of Jl,593,000.
The Post's London cablegram : The
stock markets are dull. The foreign mar
kets were disinclined to active operations
pending the coming Issue of Husslan nnd
French loans. Americans were better In the
absence of confirmation of the absurd rumor
of a St. I'aul receivership. Prices generally
finished distinctly under the best. Of the
decrease of nco.OOO In coin and bullion In the
Hank of Knglnnd this week , 479,000 were
exported , the details being 100,000 to the
Cape , 10,000 to Chill , 10,000 to nuenos Ayres
nnd the remainder In bars sold for Paris.
Discount rates are weakening here on the
general expectation that gold shipments
from America are about to commence.

THURSDAY , Dec. 6.
Cattle and sheep Srcelpts were rather lim
ited , while the rurf < of hogs was very fair ,
although the quality was scarcely as good
as yesterday.
Nothing very good was to be found In the
beef cattle line today , the holdings consist
ing largely of the usual Inferior half-fat
natives and western steers. Supplies nt all
lending markets for the day were below
the average , nnd the tone of the trade was
materially Improved thereby. Desirable
beef steers found ready sale at prices lOo
higher , while Inferior offerings were picked
up to fill In nt stronger prices.
The activity In the market on steers was
reflected In the trade In cows , heifers , etc. ,
anil values on decent holdings were gener
ally about a dime higher. Trade was brisk
and the moderate number on sale soon
changed hands , the market closing strong
at the high point of the day.
Stock cuttle were offered In only limited
numbers , nnd , as a result , business In that
direction was also active and prices strong
on all suitable offerings. Representative
