CHICAGO , Dec. 4.-Whcat started up with

stronger than had been reported of them

The short sellers knocked the bull feeling
Inspired for the foreign situation entirely
out , and the price went down from ClVio to

bullish , as well as the foreign. Dry weather
was reported to bo doing extensive Injury

May corn wns dull but firm , nnd the
firmness was due to diminishing receipts

from farmers. Hccelpta from farmers were

, ' TUESDAY , Dec. 4.
There wns a comparatively light run of
cattle today nnd no sheep , but n heavy
supply of hogs. The two days' receipts , com
pared with a week ngo , show n loss of about
1,300 cattle , and a gain of 4,000 hogs and
1,000 sheep.
Dealers were somewhat disappointed nt
the smallness of the supply of cattle today.
On account of Monday's sharp advance they
had expected a good run , whereas the re
ceipts fell fully 1,600 short of last Tuesday.
Sellers were naturally bullish nnd wanted
an advance , which buyers were unwilling
to concede on nccottnt of their somewhat
limited necessities , as well as on account ol
the less favorable news from Chicago.
Trade was consequently by no means ac
tive , although In general Monday's strong
prices were firmlyheld nnd a fairly gooil
nnd tolerably early clearance effected. Be
yond a load of good 1,368-lb. beeves thai
brought $1.33 , and another bunch that would
probably have brought more If sold , thert
wns nothing strictly good on sale , and $3.2 !
to J3.75 bought most of the warmed up nm
partly fatted stock , of which the offering !
were largely composed.
The cow market wns Indifferently suppllcc
nnd practically steady. Strong on fair t <
choice butchers' cows and heifers nnd weal
on common nnd canning grades. Cornfei
western cows sold up to $3.10 , and pool
heifers down to SOc. Calves were In llmltet
supply nnd demand and weak. IJulls , stags
etc. , sold nt about steady prices.
There was a fair degree of activity li
stackers nnd feeders. Stlllers were the prln
Ipal buyers , as there was only a llmltet
ountry demand. Prices ruled firm on thi
eslrable offerings of all weights and mower
ewer on common stock. Good to cholci
coders are quotable at from $2.70 to $3.2C
air to good from $2.33 to $2.00 , and commoi
grades from $2.25 down. Representative

Shipper. * .
CHICAGO , Dec. 4. Only a few cattle were
wanted by shippers nnd the requirements of the
local radc were limited. Prices .were steadily
held all around , no descriptions showing a quot
able change from yesteidny's prices. Froin $1.25
to J1.50 for lean , old cows , prices ranged up
ward to J0.25 for fancy Christmas steers , but
not much business was done outside of the limits
offrom J1.75 to J."i,25. the prcvnlllng prices being
from J1.75 to J2.65 for cows , heifers and bulls ,
nnd from (3.75 to J5 for steers. The close was
rather easy.
Lower prices had to bo accepted for hogs. For
the weaker condition the heavy receipts were
responsible. The market started In at a decline
of from 5C to lOc , nnd later nvernsed lOc lower ,
the clofp being weak nt from JI.40 to J4.70 for
common to best heavy nnd from 11.25 to JI.60
for common to choice llRht weights. Sales of
heavy and medium weights were principally nt
from J4.55 to J4.73 , and from JI.40 to J4.50 bought
most of the 150 to 200-lb. hogs.
The sheep market wns strong for both sheep
nnd lambs , prices being from 6c to 25c higher all
around. About 10,000 were received today , and
as yeterda > 's 20,000 head were well bought up ,
the market was decidedly lively. Today quota
tions were from 51. W to J3.50 for common to
extra sheep nnd from 52 to (1.25 for lambs , from
(3.50 to (4.15 taking most of the latter.
