CHICAGO , Nov. 21. Liberal receipts , tils-
appointing cables nnd free selling weak
ened whcnl today nnd Mny closed Tic lower.
Mny corn cloned Uc lower , May onts Vie
lower nnd provisions nt moderate declines.
Wheat opened with n show ot strenRth.
The Liverpool market. as cabled ut the
opening hour , wns firm at nn ndvnnce of
i , * l. The opening price for May wns GO'/fec
lild. with soint ! sales nt Cfl'.fcc to C0c , and
for h minute or BO there wns quite n trade
nt G0'fcc. It soon weakened , however , when
the cables were found to have brougnt
no buying onler und the receipts at Min
neapolis nnd Dululh were ngnln discovered
lo bo very heavy. The weakness Increased
nnd bccnme finite pronounced. A dispatch
was received saying the foreign markets
had turned weak on free offerings of Uus-
Blan wheat nt lower than American prices.
Tlio totnl received nt principal maikctswus
78.1,120 bu. , against CC9ofl : bn. on the similar
day last year. The exports were light , -The
local feature of the day'H business was
the buying of 1'ardrldgo nnd Looming , nnd ,
Kucceecllng them , thnt of Iloserrans. Among
those persons was bought 2,000,000 bit. In
nbout twenty minutes , nnd both 1'ardrlugc ,
deeming nnd llosecrans' purchases were
nnld to be on nccount of Kd I'nrd-
rldge. l'"rom the fact that the lining of
> uch n line raised the price nbout "ic the
market became weaker tliniv ever after It
wns llnlshed. May had declined to COlic
and recovered to from GQo to COHc. It
worked off then to CD-'iic ' to the nccompanl-
inent of n large business. Near the close
of the market It became known that n re
ceiver lind been appointed for n large Hour
mill nt Duluth nnd the previous weakness
became Intensified on thnt announcement.
May dropped In a few minutes from tO e
to D9Uc and closed ut from C9'.ic to 3'tc. > \ .
December closed nt Die.
Corn was weak , " but at % c decline from
yesterday's closing price for May there
appeared to be unlimited buying orders nnd
u great many IIOUHOH hnd them. Compara
tively heavy receipts und absence of de
mand for the spot grain , except for the
completion of one or two cargoes , the moat
of which were already In hand , caused
some desire to sell. A good deal of tne
buying on the decline wns usi-rlbed to the
fact of a good many puts having been sold
good for all week , which could be bought
signlnst without risk nt 49c for May , May
opened at from 49',4c to ID-Tic , and about
the same time a. few lots were disposed of
nt 49Ho straight. When wheat begun to
tumble corn weakened und sold off to 49c.
The volume of buying nt that caused n
reaction , of Uc , but the offerings Increased
near the close nnd It declined to 4S3c ? and
closed at that price bid.
During the entire session In the oats
market trading was Inclined to drag.
Sellers were few In number and orders to
buy were more scarce. Trading was scat
tered. Mny Ktnrted u shade firmer , at
32c , pold down to 32c , nnd nt noon wns
back to from 32c to 22\ip. \ closing nt 32 0.
Provisions were very weak nnd continued so
for about two hours , but recovered at the
end of that time , and nt the close we e
only slightly lower than at the opening.
Jlog receipts were quite ns liberal ns ex
pected. January pork , which closed yester
day nt $12.3) , opened nt 112.15 , and closed
at that price sellers. January lard , which
rested yesterday nt $7.03 , wound up today at
W.02',4. Hlbs closed today at $ G.10 , com
pared with tG.15 on the day before. Mod
erate buying prevented marked declines.

NEW VOHK , Nov. 21. The speculative
list today was centered In Burlington &
Qulncy. During the forenoon the street
awaited the action of the directors of the
company , who went Into pesslon in. Boston
nbout noon. There seemed to bo a. verj
general Impression that the regular divi
dend would be declared. Hence n good buyIng -
Ing movement was In force up to midday ,
around which the stock touched 71 % , nn
advance of 1 % per cent from yesterday's
closing. At about this time dispatches
were received from Hoston by the news
agencies nnd houses with Boston connec
tions to the effect that the dividend of Hi
per cent had been declared. This report
was qtilcUly proven false and was evidently
the result of a conspiracy on the part ul
some one In Boston with the view of work
ing the mark t. The report wna telephoned
to the Boston News bureau as from trie
directors' meeting and wns distributed ny
that concern In all directions. The false
story was quickly followed by the true one ,
that the dividend had been reduced to 1
pe.r cent , nnd thereupon n rush to ell was
begun , which , In a short timehnd broker
the price to 70 % , a loss of 3 % per cent ,
Some covering at this figure caused s
rally of V , per cent , but It was Imnossltnt
to stem the tide of sales und another re.
action set In which sent the stock dawr
H per cent , with only a recovery of U pel
cent nt the close. The loss from the highest
point touched Is 414 per cent , and from the
llnal gales of yesterday 2 i per cent. Tn <
volume' of business In the shares wai

sreeatliiR 83,000.
Were It not for the brisk buying of th <
morning In the belief of a full dividend th <
amount of stock thrown on the market
during I he afternoon would not hav
reached the large proportions which It did
but the ' -arly purchases made certain 01

Offerings of Cattle Too Large by Alinont

CHICAGO , Nov. 21. As one-halt of the cattle
actually on sale today would have met the needs
of tin- trade , the market was weak. In the gen
eral run of vattle then * was a fall of 10j to 15c
from the comparatively low prices previously nil-
InR. The extreme lange of quotations was from
$1,25 for scalfawai ? cows to $6.40 for fancy steers.
Bales were largely at $1.75 to J2.50 for cows und
heifers and bulls , und at $3.50 to $5 for steers.
Westerns sold ut shaded prlcex. Texas cattle
were steady.
At the stajt today the receipts of hops were
estimated at 53.000 , and the opening vas ex
tremely weak. The early hales were anywhere
from 5c to 15c lower than at the wmst time yes
terday. The later market was better. It was
discovered that the first estimate was ton large
by 10,000 head , and there was a retutn ( if ac
tivity. The close was not more thun Be to 100
lower than Tuesday , being ( Inn at from $1.35 to
$4.SO for heavy weights. Theie were not manv
sales at better than $1.70 , from 4.45 to JI.70
taking the bulk of the medilim and heavy , and
$4.30 to $1.45 helni ; popular prices for Unlit.
Thu demand for sheep and lambs was good and
the. market was fulr. The receipts for the l.mt
threu days have been only about 39,000 head , und
\\lth Indications of light arilvals for the le-
malndcr of this week holdeifi entertained prrtly
tlrm views. IMiir to choice sheep sold ftom
