Splendid Qualities of Reynolds Fnrnaoo as
Shown by Export Examination !
INVENTION OF AN OMAIIA ENGINEER
Detailed llcpnrt of an Investigation I-iist
ing for n WeeU-.UI I'olnls Sought
for Scout to Iliive llecn
( lulnotl.
As the result ot nearly a wesk's Investiga
tion last August , during which Smoke Com
missioner W. It. llryan of St. Louis subjected
the 'ittrnaccs ' nt the the American Water
Works plnnt at Florence to n most rigorous
scientific test , he has prepared an exhaustive
report of the conditions nnd capacity of the
furnace , comprehending Its construction ,
durability and Its efficiency as a smoke con
sumer , a steam producer anil a fuel saver.
In the course of his report Mr. llryan says :
"Tho furnace Is the Invention of Frank
Reynolds of Omaha , chief engineer of the
plant. It Is of the flro brick arch or checker
work style of furnace , combined w-lth hollow
walls for pre-hoatltiR the air. The nro box
Is built entirely Independent of and away
from the boiler. The gaseous products of
combustion In passing over the bridge wall
traverse a contracted opening and ara Imme
diately deflected downward by n hanging
wall. They then emerge Into a combustion
chamber of liberal dimensions , the exit from
which is through another contracted throat
area or checker work ot llro brick. From
this point the gases talco the usual course
through boiler tubes to the chimney. Rec
ognizing the Value of an ample supply ot
oxygen properly distributed and pro-heated ,
the Inventor made use ot hollow sldo walls.
The air Is admitted Into the walls and passes
through channels of considerable ! height , but
limited width , the channels being separated
from the furnace proper by only the linings
and arches , which are always of high tem
perature. This construction not only absorbs
to a largo extent the heat usually lost by
radiation , but returns It to the furnace , one
mnnel discharging Immediately over there
ro at the front cud ot the grate , the other
mmcdlately behind the bridge wall at the
n trance to the combustion chamber.
"Tho holler Is of the Reynolds vertical
ypo , not differing except In detail from the
rdlnary vertical Internally fired boiler so
ommon In small plants. U is , however ,
ghtcen 'feet ' over all , six feet external dlam-
tor , with 124 two and a half Inch tubes , six-
eon feet long , only thirteen fcot of which ,
owover , Is available as heating surface , the
ther tli r co foot passing through the steam
pace of the boiler. The standard form of
instruction Is departed from In this In-
tance to the extent of cutting away most of
10 boiler , there being an annular ring two
cot high nnd flvo 'feet ' wide. This construc-
lon permits the most thorough Intermlng-
ng of the heated gases with the water. The
oiler rests directly on the brick work of
lo furnace. Immediately above the last fire
: iroat.
HOW TUB TOST WAS MADE.
"Tho test was made In close accordance
Ith the rules of the American Society ot
lechanlcal Engineers. The usual firemen
atullod the fires. Ordinary slack coal was
sed and the boiler was operated In all ro-
pects as If In everyday service , except that
; wag pushed beyond Its ordinary capacity ,
'ho ' furnace and boiler were well heated be-
ere the test , at which tlmo the water level ,
ilcluiess and condition of the flro bed , steam
ressuro , etc , , were noted on logs anil
rought to the same condition at the close
f the test. Frequent and regular pbserva-
ions were taken and noted on the logs cover-
ng the steam pressure , chimney draft , tem-
eraturo ot room , chimney , feed water , as
veil as on the Barrus calorimeter , to deter-
nlno the character ot the steam as U > dry-
noss. Special observers looked after thoicoa !
and water logs , an Independent tally record
u' which was kept to Insure a check on the
ogs. The draft was measured In the up
ako leading from the boiler to the Binoke
lue , some twenty feet abpyo the leVcJ of the
grates. The draft was by no means good , be
cause eight other boilers were using the same
chimney.
"As to snioko abatement , two charts were
nken , each of an hour's duration and of dlf
ercnt conditions of service. The results
vorkcd up by means of a planlmeter uhowet
an average , of 2.79 per cent , a most excel
ent result , considering the fact that cigh
Killers were connected with the same clilm
ney , all being flred irregularly , dlffcrcn
leers being left open. It will readily be
een that it cacti Independent boiler shoult
naka a light cloud of smoke while belnt ,
Ired the result would be quite a perceptible
loud o'i smoke. In no case , however , was
ho smoke bad , and the occasional puffs were
never black and continued but a few seconds
although the boiler under test was being
crowded beyond Its nominal capacity. Ob
servatlons of this and other chimneys can
iccted with the Reynolds furnace Indicate
hat under normal conditions the furnace Is
practically smokeless. No smoke was made
when the fires were bplng cleaned , and In
his the Reynolds furnace differs from mos
of the Improved devices ; in fact , the only
line that smoke was visible at all was when
.ho fires were carelessly handlid , or whet
.hoy were allqwed to get dirty and wen
orced considerably beyond their usual ca
laclty.
DEOnCC OF EFFICIENCY.
'The ' efficiency dt the furnace was extra
ordinarily good. The plant realized 79.4 pe
cent of the heat value of the coal. The or
dlnary boiler and "furnace " rarely reach C
per cent , and that Is only with the best coa
and the most skillful management.
"Tho capacity was equally high , the belle
running CS.77 per cent above the usual rat
ng. The most surprising result Is shown o
evaporating , nearly four pounds from , am
at 212 degrees per square foot pf hoatlng sur
'ace , and of developing and maintaining
: iorso power with less than nine square fee
of heating surface , with a boiler compose
largely ot two and a hatylnch lubes.
"In respect to safety , the Reynolds furnac
ranks among the best. The furnace propc
s In no way connected with the boiler prope
and there Is no plpo work under pressure anne
no complicated mechanism or any nature ; I :
fact , the Improved results following from
clean heating surfaces-duo to the absence of
soot , and the uniform temperature , due
to the use of the arch nnd checker work ,
should Increase the safety of the boiler plant
as a whole ,
"No extra degree of skill Is required to se
cure proper results In the handling of the
Reynolds furnace. Considerable tlmo should
always bo given In the raising of steam , so
that the walla may be heated gradually and
uniformly , and. In a short tlmo the brick
work will become white hot , and when the
gases first given off by the disintegrating
mass of coal pass through the contracted
throats , which are maintained at high tem
peratures , they are thoroughly mixed and
their combustion effected under the most
favorable circumstances. Repeated observa
tions showed that only rarely were the
gases passing through the last throat colored
to a perceptible degree.
"Any ordinary boiler can be changed to
the Reynolds setting In a week's time , and
even less. If absolutely necessary.
EXCBLS IN DURABILITY.
"In the matter of durability , the Reynolds

"Standing Hear , " ono of the most pro

General Ilrooko at army headquarters yester

Four years ago this winter , when the
Sioux went on the war path , and attempted
to n hip all of the whites and half of the
United States army at the Pine Kldgo

went over to the soldiers , believing that his
brethren were wrong In making light against
the whites.
The Dear Is not a Sioux chief , and the
chances nro ho novcr will bo , but at the
same tlmo ho Is one of the most progressive
and Intelligent Indians now living on the
Pine Rldgo reservation. When Standing Dear
left his kin and appealed to General IJrookb

guiding the soldiers across thuvcary wajtea

To substant ate the fact that ho was

These sixty-six redskins promised to bo

Standing Dear were the general's medal on

After paying his respects to General Drooko
Standing Dear asked for a letter of rccom-
