COFN LOOKED TO WHEAT FOR SUPPORT

nnd llontli.
CHICAGO , Nov. 14. The wheat market
rose above Its previous high water mark
and hntl n good deal to encourage It In
such an unusual course. Strength In the
foreign market , diminishing stocks In the
world and nn unfavorable crop report from
Argentine , all contributed to nn advance of
IJic per bu. Corn , outs and provisions all
appeared to need the help given to them by
wheat. May corn closed > io higher , May
oats ? c higher and provisions with but little -
tlo change.
The wheat market responded with alacrity
at the opening to the strength of the Liver
pool cablegrams. That market's advance , In
View of the decline yesterday , was a sur
prise to the trade. France and Berlin sent
higher quotations and the home markets of
the northwest were surprisingly strong.
Commission houses here were filled with
buying orders. New York sent large buying
orders also. May , which closed yesterday
at89c , found hosts of buyers at the openIng -
Ing at ffom GO'/ic to C0c , thus covering In
one Jump nil the ground It lost yesterday.
After playing for a chart time between
the quotations named , there came addi
tional buying support , with a sprinkling of
foreign buying orders , and this Increased
the previous Btrong tone In the price before
11 o'clock , reaching C0o for May. The
market held llrtn In expectation of getting
further support from the world's supply
figures expected from ISradntJcet's. At 12
o'clock the statement was received nnd It
did not disappoint the bulls. As m > on an It
was published there was a rush among the
local scalpers for wheat and they tossed
about making excited dives In dozens for
every lot offered and bid up the price until
within ten mlnutCH from the receipt of
Hradstreet's figures May wheat sold n
high ns ClUc. Taking the net result of
Iiradstreet's statement , the world's visible
pupply decreased 472.000.1m. last week , and
that caused the quick advance referred to.
It was said In dispatches from Liverpool
that Argentine wheat crop prospects were
Buffering from excessively wet weather , be
ing given as the principal reason for htrenglh
In foreign markets. The market wound up
Etrong nnd closed at Clc for May.
Corn still leaned upon the neighboring
wheat market for support. The price was
raised n little by the bullishness of wheat ,
but not Btifllclent to create any general
alarm among the shorts. The opening price
for May was at ' , c advance on yesterday's
closing quotation and the Increasing
strength of wheat ns the session progressed
gradually worked up the shoits from n
state of Indifference to a condition of some
anxiety. May , under a liberal demand from
that class of buyers , advanced to G0c and
closed at C0c.
The aggregate sales of oats hardly
amount d to an average i o Jd day's lisl less ,
but a strong matket was apparent , nnd at
intervals considerable activity was notice
able. The principal governing power lay
In wheat and corn. May started at 32e td
32Hc , sold up to 32c , down to 32&c to
32o and closed at 32c.
The receipts of hogs here and elsewhere
In the west amounted to nn Immense ag
gregate , compared with recent numbers.
Considering such receipts , the steadiness of
the provisions market was remarkable , al
though during the great strength In wheat
prices recovered to about the level of the
closing rates of the day before. January
pork and lard are without change and ribs
tye higher.

TROPICAL. FRUITS.
The Florida orange crop Is estimated this sea
son at about 6,000.000 Imxcs , says the New York
Commercial Dullctln. This fruit Is being shlpp l
freely , repoits placing the shipments from Flor
ida between 23.000 nnd 30,000 boxes a day , which
Is an unusual quantity for so early In the sea
son , almost double that of former years. The
fruit has been very good , but has not sold well
In this market , the demand not Increasing with
the supply. A report 1ms been In circulation
this week , coming from Jacksonville , Fla. , In
the nay of a dispatch , predicting n freight war
and claiming that the Clyde- Steamship line Is
laying down oranges In the western markets-
Chicago , Cincinnati , Louisville St. I/outs and
contiguous territory 8c cheaper a box than the
all-rail rate , and It Is charged that the Clyde
line has cut the rate from 35c to 30c from Jack
sonville lo New York. These rumors ore denied
by the Clyde officials , who claim their rates nro
the fame as last year. Florida Is sending her
oranges to all markets throughout the country
and a considerable quantity Is going to Europe.
Mall advices from Liverpool dated October 27
state that the Florida oranges are arriving there
In excellent condition and are eagerly taken , at
extreme high prices ; the report notes the ai.
rival and sale of 409 boxes that day at from 17s
to 21s for llrst to third selections and from 11s Sd
to 15s 3d for fourth and fifth selections. Theca
figures are high and much above a parity with
rates prevailing In eastern markets here. It Is
believed that about 360,000 to 400,000 boxes of
oranges have already been shipped out ot Flor

With the Pxcnptlon of Kllcht Ilallles the
Alurket Was a Declining One.
NEW YORK. Nov. H. With the excep
tion of slight rallies between 11 ana 12
o'clock ami about 2 o'clock , the Bt'ock mar
ket was a declining one. The good effect
ot the proposed government loan had been
discounted during1 the- pant two days , and
when the olllclal announcement of the Issue
came this morning , those who had bouenl
stocks yesterday and the day before were
ready to dispose of them to take the profit.
London was also a seller , the same condi
tions as to the bond Issue prevailing there
as here. It was apparently expected there
would be a gpod outside demand for stock
this morning , but the commission houses
were practically without orders nnd tne
room traders were not purchasers. Aftei
an Irregular opening the market generally
took a downward turn , led by Sugar , with
the grangers also prominent In the decline ,
Durllngtou being sold heavily on Iloston
orders on rumors that the dividend
expected to be declared next week
will be scaled down. At the lower figures
there was some covering of short contracts ,
which caused u brief rally , but renewed
selling of Sugar sent prices down again. A
small recovery took place shortly before
noon , but speculation quickly relapsed Into
depression , and there was a steady depre
ciation In , values until around 2 o'clock ,
when the pressure to sell having been re
moved , a gain ranging up to 1 per cent was
made , but during the last half hour of bust-
nesa an active selling movement was In
progress , which resulted In the establish
ment of a lower range of prices , the market
closing weak and lu the ( Treat majority-

only pharos which made mare than a frac
tional gain was Oregon Navigation , which ,
on a purchase of 100 shares' , advanced 1 %
per cent. A generally heavy tone charac
terized the dealings In the band market for
the greater pnrt of the day. Near the
close , however , n better tone prevailed , nnd
soma Ktnart advances were noted.
TUB EveningPort's London cablegram
says : Today's markets were peed , except
Americans. Coiifols were at the highest

were strong , with n further substantial de

bonds being fully discounted here. Shares
are not strongly hold , hence the relapse.
However , the best houses hero attach great
Importance to a telegram to the Times
announcing that President Cleveland Is
about to Introduce n scheme for the Im

awaited with gicat Interest. Atchtaons were
especially flat , on fears of a heavier assess

WEDNESDAY , Nov. .
There wns another big run of stock today ,
325 cnrs. The three days' receipts foot up
14,600 cattle , 22,900 hogs nnd 1,887 sheep.
Compared with arrivals for the first half
of Inst week this Is nil Increase of over 8,000
cattle and over 11,000 hogs , while sheep re
ceipts show a decrease of COO.
The very liberal supply of cattle Included
only a small proportion of strictly desirable
beef steers , the general quality of the offer
ings being- rather below the recent by no
means hluh average. Conditions were sub
stantially the same as on the two preceding
days , and there wns no radical change In
prices. The fair to good beef cattle that
the dressed beef men wanted and on which
the speculative shippers -would bid were
readily salable at right around steady
prices. Lew erode stock was ns usual dis
criminated against and the market for such
was slow , with prices weak to Co and lOc
lower than Tuesday. It was a dull , mean
market pn anything except Rood stock , but
considering the quality cf the offerings a
very fair clearance \\ns made.
Cow stuff wns In talrly liberal supply nnd
very good demand , particularly the fair to
good Kiades. These -old nt right close to
steady prices. Cntiners dltl not fare so veil ,
On account of the Inrse proportion of this
class of stock offered the market ruled weak
and Be to lOc lower than Tuesday. There
was very little change In the market for
vouls or for rough Block Generally.
The stocker nml feeder- trade wns rather
mill. Good , fleshy stock nnd well graded
up yearlings met with n fair demand nt
steady prices , but other grades were more
or less neglected , and prices ruled about
a dlnip lower. Good to choice fecdcra arc
