THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : SATURDAY , NOYEMBIER 0 , 180-1. 11 COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Wheat Aclod Tired During the Greater Part of Yesterday's ' Boaaion. CORN AVERAGED EASIER BUT CLOSED FIRM vlnloiin V'ern Dull nnd u hbndo l.o\ror und < lali IVnund Up UnchanceU llliliosttlon In Sell \Vua Very Scmit. CHICAGO. Nov. 2. Wheat ncted tlrol the r/roater part of today's enslon , but was Ilrm at the finish , closing with a gain of Vic. Diminishing receipts , which nre giving rise to the expectation of less thnn CW.WJO bu. Increase In the- next visible supply state- mcnt , and considerable Inquiry from the United Kingdom for offers , caused the con tinued , strength. Corn averaged easier , but closed firm and ' ,4c higher In sympathy with wheat , Provisions were dull and u shade lower nnd oats closed unchanged. The wheat market opened rather Irregular 6ver a range of about Uc per bu. , or He l > low to Ho above the previous day's clos ing quotations. It did not Jump those limits during the first two lioura of the session. \VJth the exception of the rain there wns nothing to change the previously prevailing sentiment. The northwestern receipts were heavier than yesterday , although somewhat' smaller than on the corresponding ilay of the yenr before. Chicago receipts were light. Foreign markets were firm. The lightness of HtwItH In Knglnml and Ihu boor condition of the farmers' deliveries In both England and France Is Bald to be forcing the mlller.M of those countries to use a largu proportion of foreign wheat. Bt , Louis advised a sale for export of what was called u uoo < 3 sized line at Uc more than was offered for It yesterday and 2c over the best obtainable bid earlier Ihls week. The highest price for December at the opening watt & 3'ic ' , and It Hold down after that to G2ftc. It did not again aell as high until within 15 minutes of the close , when H brought C3ic , nnd n little Inter It touched G3c. May , from CSc lo DSUe at the start , sold down lo G7c and back again near the close to GSUc. The closing quota tions were from M'.ic ' to KlUc for December nnd from &SHa to DSUe for May. Closing cables from Uerlln reported 14 mark ad vance and Liverpool /id higher. Corn was fairly active for about.half on hour and then Hank Into a state of sus pended animation , which lasted during the greater part of the remainder of the ses sion. The price took a Jump of about I4c per bu. at the opening , and nfter that up to w 11 bln an hour of the close the tendency was moderately downward. The rise at the start was attributed to the In fluence of the ruin and the prospect of more wet weather. A good deal of realiz ing catiaed the decline , Hv 12 o'clock May , which haul sold partly at 5Vic ) and nparlngiy at DlT&c. nt the opening , was down to DHic. December , which sold neur the opening as high us KJ'.ic ' , was down to Gl'.ic by noon. Tlio firmness of wheat at the finish caused a reaction and May closed nt CL'-ic and December nt filic , Kxtreme dullness continued to be tlie only feature of the onts market. The disposition to sell was very scant nnd outside as well OB local orders were equally as scnrcu. Fluctuations were entirely In sympathy with corn. May opened slightly llrmer at 32 % , sold off later to from 32 ! o to 32c , anil the close was at 32ic. The provisions market was both heavy nnd dull , The trade Is depressed with n disquieting feeling of prospective heavy re ceipts of hogs. Receipts were 31,000 head nnd for tomorrow 38,000 head nre expected. Ixml Is again undisturbed from Its previous day's resting price , but pork Is 7Vic nnd rlba 2'/fcc cheaper. Ihe HuslTit' Is I'mflinlilci , Although Many of tlm jMHChinrr Stolen , There ar- > probably a dozen places In this city , says the New York Sun , where tlie > uslness of renting now and second-ham ! : ypowrltors la carried on. Most of these con cerns do an excellent business , and many of their lists of machines out on rental average rom 150 to 200. names. Nearly all tlio machines rented are llioj& ot a high grade which have jeen tested by experience In business olDces and In shorthand schools. A strictly now typewriter seldom rents for less than $5 a month , while- one thai Is only slightly damaged brings fJ a month. A ma chine that can bo lilred "for (3 ( U considered fit for only a "plug" operator , and such type writers are rented rarely. There are upward of seventy shorthand and : ypewrlting schools regularly conducted In this city , with classes of from ten to 200 students , This docs not Include the public day and evening schools , numerous public libraries , and general educational institutions where sucli things are taught , and scores of private Instructors all over the city. Type writer manufacturers In many Instances sup ply schools with complete outfits of their own machines free of charge , as a means of In creasing the number of operators thereon , for as Boon as a graduate obtains employment he naturally prefers the same kind of typewriter 10 has used at school , Some operators have to provide machines [ or themselves. A largo number begin by renting a machine , propos ing to buy later. Frequently they fall to dose so , and the- books of a Barclay street house , which derives a handsome monthly Income 'rom ' rrnts of machines , show that It Is a com mon occurrence for twice the value of a typewriter to be paid In monthly rentals. It Is not customary for these dealers to require - quire security for the return of a typewriter other than a written agreement stipulating that It shall be delivered lo tlie owners at the expiration of the period of rental In as good rendition as when flrst received , barring the effect of ordinary usage. Hence It la not surprising that typewriter tlileTcs are very common. 'Stealing a type-writer , " said tlio man who looks after the rental department of a largo typewriter house In Broadway , "Is grand lar ceny and a state prison offense ; yet this and tlio further fact that an immense number ot thcso Culprits have already been sent to pen itentiaries In dlffeient states do not deter dozens of others every month from making Ilko thefts. We have a. standing list of from 100 to 200 typewriters that have ueon stolen [ rom our branch offices nnd agents In various sections of the country. Every typewriter lias its own number , which , cannot be effaced , and whenever we hear thai a jnaclilns Is missing we Immediately communicate Its number to our representatives la tills country and abroad , with Instructions to seize the machine when found and lo prosecute the person holding It. H U only a matter of time when any typewriter will need adjust ing and repairing and wilt bo taken to a re pairer , and then the tlilef Is easily appre hended. Tims we actually lose few or no machines. " ftlnniiu M'llliinit ii JMIiarlo. In some of Iho eastern countries , notably Arabia and Persia , a manna answering closey to that mentioned In tlio scriptures Is still naturally produced In consldorabe quantity. It comes from the tender brandies of the tamarisk , and Is Kii'jwn to the Persians by tlio name of taramlsk lionty. It consists of tear-tike drops which exude In consequence of the puncture ol an insect In June and July , In tlio cool of the morning It is found Bollflod , and the congealed tear * may bo shaken from tlio llinlis. That , In fact , is ono ot tlio methods of gathering manna. Herodotus alludes to thu gams nutritious product , so that tliero In no doubt It has been known In. tliosa regions from the earliest ngea. It is easy to see how It might bo produced In wonderful quantities without any upeclal inanffestaUoii of the supernatural , It Is a sweetish substance , pleasant to thu taste , and highly nutritive. Some students of the blblo have supposed tha manna there mentioned to have been u fungux growth ; but while the explanation would be a natural one , the modification which It would requlro Is an unnecessary one. Ail Unpopular Wuiimn Ex-Empress Kugenlo has never been popu lar in Kngland. Sue Is generally disliked , partly because utie Is thought to be a fanati cal Homnn Catholic , and partly bucattsp she Is believed to liavo driven her con , tha 1'rlnco Imperial , to xclf-baiilsliinent anil death by her liarsh treatment of him. Thla charga against lier Is distinctly made In Conite d'llcrrlxou'a book , "Tho Prince Imperial , X polnon IV. , " just published In i'arls. lie says ; "After his father's death till persons that had been devoted to the emperor and the yaunu prince were dismissed ; the Kmpross KuKenle ro fu ed to notlco that her son ww no loncnp a child ami treated him accordingly.
