SMALL RECEIPTS A CONSPICUOUS ITEM
Death of tlio Cxsr Influenced Some
anil Sent December AVho.it Up to

1'lrit Journey.
CHICAGO , Nov. 1. Diminishing receipts ,
steady foreign markets , the dcalh of the
czar nml good buying sent wheat up loday ,
And December closed So higher. Corn
climbed. Into the band wagon with n ? c
Bain for Mny , and May oats added ? c to
yesterday's closing- . Provisions were dull ,
but slightly higher.
Another dny of comparatively small re
ceipts of wheat nt Minneapolis ana Duluth
w&t the most conspicuous Item of the curly
news , and It hnd a bullish effect upon the
market. There were buyers at yesterday's
closing- prices ns soon us the trading com
menced , and sellers were reluctant to part
with much nt that. December , which
opened at M c , rose to 53c In about an
hour , but dropped back In the next hour
to from 62',4o to 528c. < . May ranged nboul
4 6-lCo over December. Cables all the
opening came firmer , and New York re
ported some acceptances of yesterday's
cable offerings to Antwerp. Foreigners
were reported ns buyers of fulurca there ,
nnd some buying orders from Liverpool
were received here nlso. The czar'a death
Influenced some buying- orders , which sent
December wheat up to We on Its llrst Jour-
Jiey , but II sold down ' .4c , as already men
tioned , A subsequent rise to a shade beyond
D3c was ascribed to a letup In the volume
of the receipts , a partial confirmation of
the tulle of the USD of wheat for feeding ,
nulllclcnt to Influence a great deal of buy-
Ing. On the second advance , 63c tu & 3V c
wus the top. and the close was at 63c.
Iluslncss In the corn pll was fairly good
nnd nt generally Improving prices. Ile
celpts were Hllghtly less than had been
estimated. The bulls showed more con
fidence than they did yesterday. They
were less nfrnld of feeders In the east
toeing soon swamped wllh Ihe new corn
from the 1.200WOWXi , bu. crop. May corn ,
which closed ytst rday at B0c , started with
sellers at that and with buyers at over
COHc , nnd with some sales at from MHsC to
GOHc. It Improved gradually until It struck
do. ami after 'Ac reaction It rose to
01c , and wns llrm al GlHc at the close.
Trading- the oats market was limited
and fluctuation.1) were entirely In sympathy
with corn. Mny started nt 32c , sold
down to from 32 > ,4a to 32c. up to from
32o to 32c , nnd shortly before the- close
was selling at 32c , It closed at 324e.
Provisions were steadied by the steadi
ness of the grain market. They were , how
ever , held In narrow bounds. Trading was
at a standstill during the greater part of the
session , orders from outside being scarce.

THURSDAY , Nov. I.
There was a fnlr run of cattle today , n
tberal run at hogs and a light supply of
iheeii. Compared with receipts for the
lorrespondlng four days last week there hns
been an Increase of about 1.500 cnttlc , while
iog anil sheep supplies rttch allow a de
crease of Home 4,000 head.
Although there were 325 cnrs of cnttle
in. sale , there was not n. decent load of
> eef steers In the entire outfit. Trade
could hardly have been otherwise than
slow. Dressed beef men professed to be
ready niul willing to pay good , strong
prices for desirable stock , but sellers found
t dllllcult to get them to look at their poor
: o fafr stock , and prices generally shaded
'ower.
The cow market wns slow nnd lower.
There were about ilftj' loads on sale , and
while some of the Lest did not show much
decline , the common grades were hit hard.
Prices were nil of 15o to 23c lower than
the llrst of the week. Veal calves were
n vigorous demand and strong , with bulls ,
stags , etc. , about steady.
Quite a. little business was transacted In
stockers and feeders. There was enough
demand to readily absorb all desirable lots
offered at fully steady prices , but dullness
and weakness characterized the trade In
the medium and common stock cattle. Good
to choice feeders are- quotable nt J2.C00
3.25 ; fair to good. l2.25Jf2.CO , and common
grades from $2,20 down. Representative

CLEVBLu\ND , Nov. 1. The Iron Trade
Review this week says : The Iron trade has
oorno to a date at which calculations usu
ally begin to be made reaching Into a new
year. There la much expectancy nnd more
prophesying relative to 1895 , but n practical
unanimity In the opinion that If any de
ckled chaiiRe in conditions coma In ( he next
twelve months no sjns | have yet developed.
In the lake Superior ere trmle another
year's record Is soon to be closed , with ship
ments likely to run closer to 7,00),000 tons
than was counted upon early In thu sea-
Bon. The outlook for besserner ores wns
never more promising , and for nonbesscmers
the demand IH ut the lowest point In years.
I'lB Iron producers are llndlngat the end
of Oclober a. less oncouro.KlnK' Hltuatlon In
some respects than nl Iho opening of the
month. The Inability of the farther west
ern railroads to borrow money for ro-cqulp-
ment and retracklng lit not especially en-
couni liiK to H | eel mills In mat section
that , have carried lontr overdue hopes of a
railroad revival. Western bar mill men did
not iret together as planned , owlni ; to the.
( allure to enlist Important Ohio mills. Wire
null men havi : been worklnK Industriously
on a coiriblnallon , but one or two unwilling
producers stand In the way ,
