Spirit Into Trade ,
CHICAGO , Oct. 18-Dettcr cables , larger
clearances , smaller receipts and better ex
port demand ucnt wheat up ? ic today , but
larg-e offerings at tlie close weakened the
market , and May finished U < 3 higher. Corn
nnd oats closed practically unchanged , nnd
provisions nllh slight losses , Wheat opened
Vic over yesterday's closing price. The ca-
blcgrnma were more encouraging than for
Homo time past. The Cincinnati Price Cur
rent says the market for winter wheat was
61111 restricted and the feeding or It main
tained. After some selling against calls had
cauMcd n slight shading ot the first advance ,
New York Infused n little more spirit Into
the bulls by wiring that there were some
foreign buying orders there from the conti
nent , upon which Information another \ic \
per bu. was mldeil to the grain with which
the market opened. 1'rlmary market re
ceipts were smaller than on uny previous
day , nml the Atlantic pjrt clearances were
larger. December whetit opened nt 52Uc ,
Bold ppnrlngly at G2c , and utter reacting
to raiie It rose to u&c. ! ! The presence of
Wheat In the. New York clearances was
fiomcivliat disappointing- bulls and cooled
their ardor for awhile. The price began to
weaken again , nnd was down again to from
l % c to Sc about 11:30 : a. m. Although n.
good deal of Belling- out by scalpers caused
comparative weakness , now nnd then the
market made higher reactions after each de
cline. The death of the ameer of Afghan
istan , damage to the Argentine wheat crop
confirmed , and a repetition cf the early reports -
ports from New York of a good demand
from the continent were the later Influences
Which put December up to We. Offerings
Increased near the close and the market
declined to a moderate extent , December
finishing- CS'.ic.
Corn averaged firmer. It started with
borne trading nt the price It stopped ut yes
terday , nnd n little nt Uc per bu. higher.
The- better fpi'llnir wns due In part to the
llrmneas of wheat. The dally reports ot dis
appointing results from husklngs were con
tinued , and those came today from Illinois ,
Iowa and Ohio In greater number than be
fore. The principal bearish factor was snld
to bo the growing Indifference of the east
ern consumers , who do not appear to view
the light stocks with alarm. The day's
fluctuations for May delivery were confined
Jvlthln)3'.4c ) nnd 4 ! > % c , the Intes't trading
being nt 49o to 43Hc , or 1-lCc lower than It
closed yesterday.
Trading In oats was quiet nnd confined al
most entirely to scalpers and local parties.
A slightly Urmer feeling existed In sym
pathy with corn. May started at 32lc. sold
os low as 32V4c , ns high ns 32'Jc , and again
was selling from 32J&C to 32c , closing at
from 3Z o to 32Hc ,
Liberal receipts of hogs caused heaviness
In the rnnrkct. hut very little trading re
sulted. Fluctuations were narrow , as a re
sult of a general disinclination to do busi
ness. The leaders refrained from leading ,
and their followers stood still. Prices
started with a decline of 5c In pork , lard
and ribs , nnd that represented at the close
the result of the day's business In lard and
tlbs , pork losing another 2Hc.

Under Vlgorou'i Pressure.
THUnSDAY , Oct. 18.
Receipts of cattle have- fallen off over 2,000
icad so far this week , as compared with
ast , and the decrease In sheep amounts to
over 10,000 head. In hogs there has been nn
ncreasc of about -1,500 head.
The cattle market was Indifferently sup-
illeJ both as lo quantity nnd quality , th.2 r -
celpts being several hundred lighter than
jn Wednesday , and something like 2,000
Ighter than n week ago today. There was
no material change In the trade. On account
of the continued shortage In desirable beef
cattle , the demand for this claes of stock
wns active , enough to firm prices up a shade
on these grades. It was Impossible , how
ever , to get over steady prices for the gen
eral run of steers.
Cow stuff wns in rather better demand
than usual , and with no Improvement In the
receipts , prices averaged stronger all
around. Venl calves were also In active re
quest at firm prices. The market for bulls ,
stags and rough stock generally was not
ciuoiably changed ,
Store life ami strength characterized the-
fltocker nnd feeder trade today. There wns
more of a demand and less of a supply.
Prices accordingly averaged up strong on
nil suitable offerings. Representative sales ;

CHICAGO , Oct. 18. Sales of cnttlo wera not
as slow ns on the preceding days ot the week ,
and , while prices were no better lhan before ,
the feellni ? was firmer nnd healthier. Receipts
were less than expected , and there wns a return
of confidence. Choice beeves continued scnree
nnd show a tendency to BO higher. They would
no doubt at once advance , but for the abundance
of poorer kinds. Today's arrlv.nls were estimated
nt 15.WO head , of which nliout 6,000 head were
natives. 5.000csUrns nnd 2.000 Tcxans , Natives
were Quoted at from SI ta $0.15 , with most of
the sales tit from tl.73 to $2.110 for cows , heifers
nnd bulls nml nt from $4 ( o J5.25 for Fleers.
Sales of westerns were Renernlly at fioin J2,2to
J2.7& for cows nnd nt from $2 to JJ for steers ,
with from } 1.0 to } 2.10 the range of quotations.
Tc-xas cattle xvere lulnhle nt from Sl. i to 53.M.
There was no quotnble chnnue In the prices of
tiopa. The run wns ncnln nbove expectations ,
amounting lo 27.000 head , but there was n coed
demand nnd sellers had the satisfaction of nee-
InK the pens well cleared nnd nt full prices. A
Brood deal ot fault wns found with the quality
of the olTerlnRs. nnd Justly so , for there wera
comparatively few prime , heavy weights nnd
iKht mixed predominating. Only nn Inalgnlflcnnt
few of the supply sold nbovc J5.10 , thoueh as
hlgli ns $5.40 was pnld for prime heavy. The
greater part of the supply chnnsed hands nt from
14.8(1 ( to S3 , Many common lots were an low as
from J3.85 to $3.75 and pigs were not readily dis
posed oC nt from $2 to $2.33.
In sheep the fresh arrivals wore estimated at
12,000 head , which wns comparatively small , but
there were about 18.000 head of Hlicep and lambs
left over , FO that the supply was close to SO.fiOO.
As half Hint number would more than have met
nil needs. Bellern- were ncnln In buyers' hands.
The reputed pales showed a further loss of from
lOc In Uc per 100 Ibs. . the bulk belnK sold nt
from J1.75 to 12.50. The Intter figure bought the
choice cheep , nnd the top of the market wns
around ? 3. I.amUf were off to from J1.S5 to $3.60
for poor to choice. The pens arc still full of un
sold stock.
