DECEMBER WHEAT TOOK A SLIDE

December Wheat.
CHICAGO , Ocl. 17. The markets were all
very dull for an hour today. After that
there was a fair amount of business at Ir
regular prices. Wheat , corn and jmts be
came very weak , buE woke up and milt
flrro , with wheat and corn at practically
unchanged prices , ns compared with yes
terday's ' closing rates , nnd oats Uc higher.
Provisions nre moderately steady. Ucfore
Its reaction December wheat made a low
price record , nt Ol'/ic.
Wheat line been n chronic record breaker ,
Bnd by Us previous record of dullness was
In danger of being1 broken. Hulls and bears
appeared by common consent lo have agreed
tor an hour that there was no chance- for
profit in buying December wheat al from
E2'/dc to 52'.ic , or In selling It at KIUc , those
being the extent of the fluctuations In thnt
time. There wns nothing of a disturbing
character In the early news. Chicago re
ceived 1)9 ) cars , Instead of 120 estimated , but
Minneapolis received K5 curs nnd Duluth
3G2 care , making together at the two last
places 917 , compared with 813 on the corre-
npi ndlng day a year ago. Out of 63.000
bu. shipped from Chicago , the fact that
62,000 bu. of it wns contract , was thought
worthy or remark. Foreign markets were
ntrady at the opening. After maintaining
for un hour Hie mere shadow of business
there came upon Ihe market n few more
celling orders than could be lilted at the
current rate. IJtforo. 11:30 : a. in. December
had declined lo fil'ic , which marked another
low price record. Slay , from 574c ! to SV\c
nt the opening , declined to f > Gc to SC'.ic ' ,
These declines were followed by n quick re
covery of Vie per bu , The reason nf the
weakness wan principally caused by the re
ceipts which disappointed nil hope regard-
Ing1 the prospect of any Immediate reduc
tion. Primary markets received a total oC
over & 0.000 bu. , with shipments of only
135,000 bu. An imnuthentlcatcd report that
some Chicago wheat had arrived at Liver
pool In bad condition wns used by the bears.
it struck the market when the price of
December had recovered to fJ2c after ( he
break referred to. The market remained
firm during the last hour of the session.
December closing at 53'ic , after touching
C2'--c. There was a good deal of Inquiry
for red winter for shipment , but only & 0.000
bu. was taken up to the close. The visible
supply Increase was less than the 5,000,000
bu , expected , and this was a strengthening
factor at the finish.
Corn opened rather flrm , and remained BO
lor nn hour or so. It yielded some when
wheat was taking Its early header , but had
begun lo Improve while the other market
was still In Its struggle with Its own record.
Hecclpts , which were only 75 cars , were of
Borne encouragement to the bulls , nnd 155
cars estimated for tomorrow did not dis
turb them. May opened at Me , but after an
hour's steadiness dropped to 4STSc to 4 c.
About half nn hour from the close It was
back again to 43VsC , where It finished.
Receipts of oats were even more moderate
than the small number estimated yesterday ,
being I'i8 cais. For tomorrow estimated re
ceipts are 1(5 ( cars. The market was irreg
ular and followed wheat nnd corn. It was !
firm nt the opening , became weak , and then
firm again at the close , the price of May
resting at 32c. !
Hather a. light speculative business was
transaclcd In hog products and the feeling
was somewhat unsettled and prices Irregu
lar. The receipts of hogs were ( smaller than
anticipated , with a slight advance in prices.
Offerings , however , were fair , and In sym
pathy with Ihe weakness In grain , prices
gradually receded to Inside llgurea. Near
the close a. little more steadiness prevailed ,
with moderate demand from shorts. Com
pared with last night , January pork and
ribs are2V c higher und lard unchanged.
Freights Blow ; grain lo to ISuffnlo ; char
ters to Midland at Uic for corn and Ic for
oats.

WEDNESDAY , Oct. 17.
Hecelpts so fur this week , compared , with
last , show a falling oft of about 500 cattle
and some 1-1.000 sheep , while there lius been
an Increase of nearly 3.CVO head of hogs.
The fat cattle market wns Indifferently
supplied , and as the demand waa good from
all sources , 11 was dlillcult to discover any
? rcat change In prices , as compared with
the two preceding1 days. The local dressed
: > ecf men were nil ntcr ( supplies , nnd not
withstanding1 the rather unfavorable tone to
reports from Chicago and other markets ,
sellers experienced little dllllculty In real
izing right around steady prices for nny-
thlng the buyers really wanted. There was
a. rnft of low grade stuff In the yards that
no one wanted , and sellers had to accept
iretty mean prices In order to [ jet rid of
i . ii" ifl'tnmm '
With cow stuff It wns pretty much the
same. Supplies were In the neighborhood
of fifty cars , or substantially the Bame ns
on Tuesday. Buyers started In to pound
the market , but In the end paid right
around steady prices for all grades. There
wa a good , brisk Inquiry for veal stock
at right around Tuesday's figures , and the
mnrkct for bulls , stagu ami rough stock
generally was fulrly active and fully steady ,
The stocker and feeder trade , was no bet
ter. Buyers wanted good , fleshy stock , that
would not need a great deal of corn to
make fair beef , or else light stockers that
would not need , any corn , at all the coming
season , These gnides were salable at
steiully prices. On the less desirable stock ,
the betwixt nnd between grades , the inar-
Ket was as dull nnd weak as could well
b ? Imagined. They could hardly bo sold
at nil. In fnct. Good to choice feeder * are

There woio not enough Good shlpplnu cattle to

Therefore , whllo the former were \vnnted nt

The recent advance of c la the London imiiKet
