COLLECTIONS ARE QUITE SATI-fACTORY Jobb n Jtrport n Very 1'nlr Itrmnml for ScKinoniiblo fJiiuili In .Mint All Jliie Local Itctiill Trnda Htiim * n Very ? lu U-rlul Iin liroroiiicnti The past week hat been practically devoid of tny especially now features of Importance In the jobbing district of Omaha , The cool weather has helped to stlmutato the demand for seasonable goods , and the volume of business has been well maintained OB com pared with the previous week. While there lias boon no great Increase In the amount ot business doing , trade has held Its onn , and the situation , may bo summed up as fairly satisfactory to the dealers In staple lines. The Jobbers are covering a very wldo ter ritory , and are making up , In part at least , for what they lese In tha short crop sec tions by pushing out farther and Into new territory. In the end this opening1 up of now territory will bo a good thing tor the Jobbers. Tha volume ot business Is good In every section of the territory tributary to this market , except In. those states and localities where the crops were cut short. In the Black Hills country business Is especially active , and Omaha jobbers are enjoying a very largo share ot the- business of that section of the country , Although times arc Bald to be- rather quiet In Oregon and Washof" Ington , the merchants In those state : are buying a good many goods In this city. The local retail trade- has been quite brisk during the past two weeks , and vrhlla the volume ol sales Is not as large as some would like to see , the situation shows somuch Im provement ever a tow -weeks ago. that no one Is disposed to complain. As a matter of fact , the IncreaseIn the volume ol retail sales Is limited almost exclusively to winter goods , showing that the cool weather Is the Incentive to buy. At the present time jabbers are generally anticipating a continued fair demand for goods during the winter and coming spring. White previous crop failures have been always followed by n light trade- , the situation at the present time la very different from what It was during previous short crop years. Dullness men are pretty gener ally recognizing this fact now , and are shap ing their business accordingly. Commercial papers published In widely separated sec tions , ot the country arc calling attention to the great extent lo which liquidation was carried on during the past year and the d- . pitted condition of stocks , This Is especially true of tlio ilry goods business , as shown by the Dally Record ot New York : "In the nlno months between October 1 , 1803 , and July 1 , 1891 , there never had been Btich a liquidating policy practiced by the manufacturing , converting , jobbing and retail branches of trade" as was than effected. He- tall era and. jobbers , to em-ploy a metaphor , waded into the stream , but Mould not cross It. In entering upon the schemeof liquida tionwhich was opened up to them a year ago the matter ot purchases was of secondary consideration aa long as they could realize on stocks In store at a profit , cost or loss- . This policy was forced upon them by the condition of trade that opened before them when tlio panic of a year ago had spent Its force "The results which followed were conspicu ous In n general stfr.pp.igc of the mills. This did. not stimulate ) the demand , If It did not have a contrary effect. Every buyer reasoned that tlio mills had full stocks , otherwise they would not have shut down. Such being the condition , which appeared to be well sup ported by tha action of the mills , buyers argued , as If by concert of action , that the ' best thing they could do to maintain a large i'- percentage of the productive capacity in a - state of Idleness was to restrict purchases to the smallest quantities possible , and by "sweating" prices discourage the mills from starting up. How well tliclr plans succeeded Is too well known to require further statement than that In the year ended with September the out put of the mills surely averaged a decrease of one-thin' if a normal production. "Upon the jobbing and retail trades the effect of such a , policy was exceedingly whole some , as carried over stocks were reduced tea a minimum never before approached. This was particularly true or all spring goods , that at the end of Juno hart been marketed beyond- expectations In the matter ot quantities , which before the end of July had disappeared to a further greater extent. "Because of so many mills having been stopped and values sweated below a , cost at which the goods , could not bo replaced , the mills remained Idle , ami , as stocks were re duced mora rapidly than the purchasing trade thought possible , the ninrkct awoke to Its trua condition the middle of last month. Then , to meet Immediate , near and later wants , advance orders wore located , and a legitimate demand nt ( his date- has control of a very largo percentage- the output Into and through December. Buyers have been compelled to recognize this view of the situ ation. Of tlio more staple descriptions of all clashes ot goods the stocks are nominal and a good portion ot the uatput Is sold ahead. This phase of the situation was un expected. " AS DUN H iiS : IT. llreak In Hugur tlio lWturo ! ot the Wcnk Onmli. % Tlnipt Not So Hard. Mr. W. H. rtoliernon , manager of n. (5. Dun & Co. in Omaha , speaking of trade tor the- week , says : "No marked betterment of conditions haa developed anywhere along the line of trade or home Industries. Wholesale markets continue to report a sat factoiy volume of miatne&a , as vvult ua exceedingly good col lections ; especially Is thlfl true In dry goods and groteilcs. "Among grocers the special feature this week -was the break In sutrar , brought about by the withdrawal nf Chicago houses from what has btcn known aa the 'equality agreement/ under which a uniform price1 for this commodity within certain territory existed. Omahn. Jobbers , bitnc notified of the withdrawn ! of the Chicago houses , were. of course , us they are always , ready to meet the Issue. To do this and protect themselves they Immediately wired their traveling men to reduce the price S9c per cut. on giatiulnted and > c on all other erodes , thus barring Chicago from a large market , except entered nt n loss , Discuss ing the sugar question with one of our largest Jabbers , lie gave me the following Interesting ilgures : 'Tho yearly output , ' Bald lie , 'of Nebraska beet sugar refineries la about 150 curs , threejuartcrn < of which product Is bundled by Omaha dealers , while the total distribution by Omaha Jobbers Is about l.SOO cum per annum , of 100 Tjarrets to. a. car of 30.000 pounds capacity. Lincoln and Fremont jobbers sell about 450 cars , Sioux City , St. Joe and At chiton In Ne braska , 150 cars , while other Interior job bers fall Into line , with fifty earn , making In round numbers a totnl distribution In Nebraska of 1.050 cam , with nn average valuation of about $1.750 per car , equaling a. total of nearly 73tl4COOworth of sweet. Itess , the prlca now being 174 cents , or vlth- In one-half of t cent per pound of the low est point ever reached. Law prices , how ever , in alt the necessaries of life , Is now the rule. ' "Never before , ' said an old merchant , could BO much that enters Into family lite and use be purchased for a dollar us today , regardless whether the dollar bo gold , sli ver or greenback , nnd we have to soil two " or threu tlme.i the quantity of goods that we used to In order to get the nme amount of money , and we are selling them. ' "Which latter fact , by the way , goes to aliow that the hard times 'bugbear' Is per haps not PO much In evidence In Omaha , rns In the minds of some of Its people. Our ' traveler * reports this wcrtc from Interior cities nearly all Indicate a healthy fctute of trade. "Senator Paddock said to me the other evening ; 'The cash sales lost Saturday of one of our I3eatrlci3 Mores was Jl.MO. while another ono claims the last two weeks' business ns the best In two years. ' "Lincoln retailers say the week ha been up to the average , ami ono house is quoted with itn average of Jl,300 dally cusli sales , "It in to bo risretled thai the sun of prosperity bus not xhonc upon Kearney's of financial horUon this week. On Wednesday ho First National bank of that city found Itself umibla ta honor lh > checks of Its depositor * , but claimed th * bank would be able to resume } Thunulay , on which date , howtv r. It wo forced to suspend , the Bu penslon ot Ihe PufTalo County National bank following on Friday. The amount of money on deposit , subject to check In the First National being reported lens than pi.QOO , with time-certificates of 130,000.when considered with Its reported capital of J200000. may be the measure by whichwas RUageu the strength of thla Institution by the business public. The trouble which brought the Ilu/Talo / County National's down fall antes back for some time , ami nan been n , source of much anxiety to Its friends. Until the national tank examiners , now In rhargo of HieBe1 Institutions , make their re port , no definite llgurea as to value of as- I * nnd nubilities can be furnished. "Tha mercantile failure * of the -week- have not been large In. number or important In amounts. " _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ HNCW , CUUJtVII A CO.'S YJKMT8. Onuilm's rielcl nn n Jablillic I'oint U Itnpiilly on HIP Incrrmc. Albert Andrlano , local superintendent for Snow , Church & Co.'s mercanllla agency , writes : "An event unexpected to the large major ity ot business people , was the failure of two banks at Kearney , Neb , According lethe the Information which has thus far come to ham ] , It appears that these Instftulons. went to the wall principally for the reason that they could not realize on their securities. This Is only another Indication of the de pression prevailing in some parts of this state. It is dllllcult , however , ut this time to have a clear conception of the case , und the facts will only come out when the af fairs of the collhpseil concerns have been overhauled. There Is always a feeling of uncertainty prior to an election , affecting mercantile pursuits of oil kinds to a greater or less c > egTec. "The Issues thl * fall , however , arc mainly local , and the effect la , therefore , not very depressing. "The seasonable weather of the past week has made retail business fairly good , In wholesale linen there Is little change In the situation. When the failure of crops some months since was reported , there was a widespread feeling among feeders and feed merchanti that there would be a. scarcity Qfcj food product this winter. Aa a result all manner of devices were used to meet the emergency , nnd there Is nn amplitude of feed of n.11 kinds. The reports at the time were largely exaggerated Large bunches of" cattle were shipped Into the packing centers , and the number of head to be fed during- the winter Is smaller by a consider able percentage than usual. Good hay Is high , and may be higher during the -winter , as usual , bul reports to the effect ths.t It will reach extraordinary figures nre discred ited Uy well posted feed men. "Speaking of trade In general , It may now be safely sahl that thi * last vestiges of the recent depression are rapidly disappearing , und I do not hesitate to say that , making way for a normal condition of nfTalrs , the business world stands at the beginning of an era of unusual prosperity. This , no doubt , will revert toIhe benefit of this state nnd of Iowa , and Incidentally to that of Omaha. In connection with the failure of crops , I heard the assertion repeated again and again that the field of Omaha aa a Jobbing center is limited , and the feeling sec ma to prevail with some wholesalers that trade cannot be profitably worked from Omaha , beyond the limits of a certain re stricted territory. A. number of houses , however , notwithstanding advice to the con trary , have aggressively pushed trndej ns far west as Ihp coast , and have been re warded by a remunerative business In this Held. In considering the future of Omaha at a Jobbing town , It becomes evident to the most camial observer that thcie nre great things In prospect for this city If Its ad vantages are properly pushed nnd de veloped. "Irrigation work In western counties Is rapidly progressing. Ditches nre building all alongthp North Lottp and other running streams In the state. Most of them will be built before spring , nnd farmern hope to reap the benefits of Irrigation before next summer. With n large area , of welt Irri gated territory tributary to Omaha and a fair crop lu Nebraska and Iowa , the field near this cltv will give opportunity for the upbuilding of n very largo wholesale trade , "The Burlington road has recently com pleted Its extension and connection with the Northern Pacific , giving another coast line touching Important points in the- northwest territory. According to agreement , freight rates between Omaha and the const , an well as to the Intermediate and local shipping points , will be the same as those from St. Paul This opens up to competition Wyom ing , Montana , Idaho and Washington on nn even basis with St. Paul , In a territory which has heretofore been nlmost con trolled from the east bv that city. Crops In that country and In the Black Hills have been/ peed this ye.ir , and the country Is In n , prosperous condition. Trade In Nebraska for the next few months will naturally be llRhler than In previous seasons. The openIng - Ing of the territory will , therefore , Pnnble jobbers to make > up for what thpy will lose In the home field. This ability to compete with St. Paul has longbeen the desideratum of aggressive business men at Omaha. "A casual glance at the map -will show the following state of affairs : Iowa , Ne braska , northern Kansas. Colorado , now the recognized Omaha territory , and Wyom ing , South Dakota , Montana , Idaho , Wash- Ircton iind Oregon , nil open territory to this city The complaint off a limited Held no longer applies. The field of nny jobbing center is limited only by Its railroad facil ities. With good connections and favorable rates. It onlv depends upon the aggressive ness of local Jobbers and the enterprise of Interested property holders In securing the location and establishment of more whole salers to tntike Omaha a center of very great Importance. Omaha business men would do well to give this subject careful consideration nnd detailed attention. " Ncir Vurk Itry ( limili Uirkot. : NEW TTOUK. There- seems to be n necessity of cheapening In so mo way the cost of transportation. One of the large Items Is the multiplicity of agents looking after each separate Interest. There * fore It IB proposed to have one office for all tlio companies , each company doing Its own business and getting all the money It receives. CHICAGO , Oct. 13. Wheat was very dull todny , keeping within Uc range. Aided by better clearances nnd steady cables , the market was steady , closing lie higher. May corn closed He lower , May oats ' ,60 lower and provisions lower nil around. The wheat market opened with a slightly Improved tone , but with very llttlo Increased activity. The clearances for the- week were heavier than the dally clearances from the Atlantic trarls had seemed to Indicate. An other reason for returning confidence was found In the steady feeling reported from England and the continent , and the growing necessity which eastern millers appear lo be experiencing of coming to western , com mercial entry ports for red winter wheat. Some little strength was imparted to the market by a private cable from Antwerp , reporting a favorable outlook fur tlie Ar gentine crop , but was lost owing to the apparent Indifference to such news of the market from which it emanated. Corn was easier except for a few minuter In the rarly part of the session. Business was of moderate volume. The demand , however , has been f a very urgent nature fiom nJI classes of ealers , the shortage In good beef cattle ntloubtedly being In a large/ measure re- [ lonslbte for this. II certainly furnished lie occasion for a general ndvanco In rices of from 25c to 40e , as compared with lie extreme low point on lost Friday. IJuyers have had to depend almost entirely n the range cattle for their supplies , ns here was absolutely not one load ot geode o choice native beeves tii Iho jarxH all week. The weakness nt eastern markets as cut comparatively llttlo llgure here , ns laughterers simply had to have thecuttle , nd If they could not get as good cat tin ur is many of them as they wanted they Imply had to take what they could get. In onsetiuenco there vvai a. good , strong tone o the trade all week and buyers nt the lose were still "entile hungry. " Ilecelpts today were the lightest of th reek , but there were a. few loads of very air beeves , both natives und rangers. The narket wna active und stronger all nruund nder the Influence of a good , brisk demand , mainly from local dressed beef houses , md the forenoon's trading1 practically leared up the supply. Common toery air 1.050 to 12TiO-lb. native steers sold nt rom U.SO to JI.20. and J2.83 to JJ60 bought a good many fairish to pretty good rangers velghlnfi- from 1,100 to l.aw Ibi. Cow stuff has also sold at higher prices n sympathy with the advance In fat cattle. \.n active demand from e.istern butchers las made competition lively nnd the move ment has been brisk all week. The- supply ' oday was rather smaller thaji usual awl It 'Id not take bu > ers long to clean them up. 'rices were steady to a shade stronger nan Friday and 15c to 25c higher than hey -vvere a , week ago. Veal calves have > een In good , active request at llrm juices ill week , and sellers have experienced llt- le dllllculty In moving bulls , stags and rough stock generally nt llrm figures. . During the early part of the week there was a rattling good market for stackers and feeders. There were lots of buyers nnd he supply , while liberal , was none too lenvy for the demand. Prices advanced sharply nnd this , In turn , had a tendency o keep buyers away , while at the same Ime It stimulated the supply Aa a result Buyers were able to pound tlu > market iri-tty ' hard the past day or two , taking off 'ully a quarter without any dllllculty.
