It , too , passes through historic ground , Custcr's ' battlefield being only two miles to the south ot the Crow agency , and the monument which marks the site of the massacre. Is only a mlle from the Ino of the Burlington road and In plain view from the car windows. The road skirts the Little Dig Horn , whcro Sitting Hull and Chief Gall , with their C.OOO Sioux and Chey enne warriors , were encamped when Custer and his handful of men of the Sev enth cavalry marched down to their death June 25 , 187C. There ore still to ba seen the marks of the Indlau camp ; : , tepee poles still standing along the banks of the stream where the Indians were camped , but It Is a peaceful scene now. Klghleen years atro a white man's life would not have been worth a farthing In that valley. Tod.iy there Is a good sized settlement ofwhites about the agency , and while there are plenty ot Indians to be seen , they are peaceful Crows , who are as "good Indians" as nny live Indians can be. They own their farms , they have wagons and buggies , and , stranger yet. all sorts ot farm Implements , Including reapers , mowers and threshing machines , which they put to use after a Fashion. Workmen are busily engaged in laying the track In the Hillings yard , the last spike having been driven on the line between the Burlington and the terminus of the Northern Pacific. M'KSTUKN ROAD'S A KB FIR.II , Will Fight Ilather Tlmn Abanilo'n the emi grant CIrurlnir House. CHICAGO , Oct. 3. At tha meeting of the Western Passenger association toduy the bus iness transacted was largely of a routine nature , tha principal matter disposed of being the question of the readjustment of North Pacific coast rates In the trunk line territory. Chairman Calflwell was Instructed to follow up the matter ulth a view of se- cmlnc the adjustment of these rates to the agreed basis between tha Western Passenger association lines and the Trunk. Line associa tion. This means that the western lines are not going to take any back water In their fight with the trunk lines over the emigrant traffic. The western lines are more deter mined than ever today that they will not allow the trunk lines to do away with the emigrant clearing house , and they are bound to maintain It , even at the expense of a big war , although they are anxious that such a contingency may bo avoided. There Is no money In a fight for anybody and the west ern lines are as well aware ot this as tha trunk lines can possibly bo , However , they are determined that the emigrant clearing house , which has proven the best solution of what has always been a hard problem to western roads , shall not lie done away with. All the other business transacted at the meeting was purely of a nnitlno nature. Karnlnes of the Chicago , Milwaukee & St. Paul road for the first week In October were $ CC7,201 , a decrease of $164,564 compared with the corresponding week of last year. S. C. Matthews has been appointed auditor of the Ilock Island road , to succeed the late P. W. Porter. The grain blockade which threatened Chicago cage some weeks ago has now been entirely 1'Jted ' and the western roads are once more taking all the freight they can procure. The matter at ono time threatened to become so serious that a few of the lines were com pelled to command their western agents to take no more grain for Immediate shipment. The trouble lay not so much In the lack of ability of the roads to haul the freight as In the fact that shippers had no place to put their grain , and the roads were compelled to act both as carriers and warehousemen. 15NHOUTE TO I rolltlcluns unit Ci\pllull t In the Purty ( ilinrt Ntop In Onniliti.
