NEW TOttK , Oct. C. Dun's weekly rfr.
view of trade , which Issues tomorrow , will
say : \Vlth the chief crops ot Iho west and
south sinking lit value , It Is not strange that
mrcliases ot manufactured jiroJticls nr
smaller than was expected. Wheat lias
ottched the lowest point ever known tor op *
Ions , and cotton the lowest point ever known
n any fonn with the present classification ,
and the nccummulatlon ot stocks In both pro-
lucts la discouraging ( or purchasers for an
advance. I'roduccrs are compelled to sell at
irlces below the ordinary cost ot raising
crops , and In some western states thcro la
also a lamentable failure In the corn crop.
Under the circumstances It would bo very
strange It the demand for manufactured pro
ducts should bo qulto as largo as In other
rears. "Wheat suffers most from ac
cumulation of stocks In eight , which
are far beyond what Is usually expected for
: ho season , nnd the exports In September
were unusually small. For the first week ot
October Atlantic exports were 1,097,372 bush
el * , against SC,1,74C bushels last year , nnd | |
woste-rn receipts were only -I.CIG.COO bushels , /I
against'6,130,087 , bushots last year. Thcso
Igurcs give some encouragement , but have
llttlo Inllucnco In view ot Iho unusual vlslblo
supply. The prlco for cash wheat Is a. small
fraction higher for the week.
Corn Tocelpts at the west have only been
a third as largo as they were last year , with , J |
exports amounting to nothing , but the prlco f
lias not further declined after the heavy fall gf
during the previous fortnight. f
Pork products were weak In tone , though
only lard Is quotably lower. Cotton la V4
cent lower , the cash price being the lowest
known for forty-live years , and , considering
the difference In classification , It Is , per-
liaps , lower than at any tlmo since 18ID , nnd
estimates that the crop Is more than 10,000-
500 bales arc more commonly credited now
than estimates of 8,500,000 were two m on tha
ago. With favorable weather the yield seems
likely to be the largest ever known.
The condition of the industries Is In some
respects moro satisfactory. Evidently there
Is larger demand for Iron products than
thcro was n month ago , though the Incrcaso
In output has been somewhat greater than
the Increase In demand , BO prices steadily
tend downward , llcssemer pig Is selling at
J10.90 at I'lttsbttrfi nnd bar Iron at D5 cents ,
with steel bars at $1,05 , while a contract to
suppress tha principal western competitor In
nail manufacture Is expected to hold the * _ < |
prlco at $1 for wire nnd SB cents for cut
nails. The structural market Is fairly active
at the west , without change at the cast. SI
The coke output has now become the § 1
heaviest ever known , 149.770 tons for the
week , the price is declining and atepa are
being taken to limit the supply.
The boot and shoo trade continues to deliver - * I
liver more goods than In any previous year ,
O.B It did In September , nnd most of the world II 1
still have orders for one or two more week.11 III
-I
ahead , although for mare medium priced -
goods. There Is a little better demand thla
week for goods of. higher quality , however ,
and the demand for leather Is ttlll reducing
the reserve.
The failures for the past week liavo been
219 In the United States , against 320 last year ,
and thirty-nine In Canada , against forty-flya j |
last year. J

NEW YOISK , Oct. 5. "nrndstrcet's finan
cial review will say tomorrow : The- Indus
trial stocks have again been the market !
that Is to say , two of the prominent mem
bers of that group , Sugar and Chicago
Gas , have monopolized attention and In a
mensuie decided the tendency of tha en
tire stock list. Apart from this there were
( aw developments of Importance , Pro
fessional trading continues to be rampant
and public Interest , except In the Invest
ment market , where n conservative de
mand for nrcurlllt's Is shown , la at a min
imum. The rumors ot complications be
tween England nnd France e em to hnvo
created more or less of a "scare" la tha
London market , but this wan not followed
by any hcnvy selling of Hccurltles here for
London nccount. Bo mo few thousand
Blinrea were marketed , hut scarcely enough
to affect prices. The situation , in fact , BO
far as the general railroad lUt la con
cerned. Is governed largely by the fact
that the prevalence ot cheap money ren
ders holders unusually tenacious and In
disposed to part with their shares , Tha
tone of the market 19 aa a whole weak
nnd depressed , and particularly on Mon
day nnd Tuesday was It to , and a break
In Sugar to W % per cent on Saturday ,
accompanied by heavy transactions In tjint
mode , Iniluenced the temper ot the traders.
If It did not prove of vtry much effect
on prices neneinlly. Coveting of the short
Interest In the leading Industrials ensued ,
however , on Wednesday , nnd rallied the
price of that stock , whlla discouragement
appeared In the ranks ot the beam In
other stocks. Distillers became stronger
on. the announcement that Urn company' *
directors had abolished the rebate system.
