Grain Markets Had a Tempestuous Time of
It Yesterday ,
WHEAT HAD A STRONG START GENERALLY
It Had H ( rc ly dot Under Wnjr , IIoitoTcr ,
When the Orders of the Short
Boiler * Were Turned
Loose.
CHICAGO , Oct. C. The grain market had a
tempestuous timetoday. . The reported death
ot the czar , a Ii6avy New York failure , light
receipts nnd light clearances mixed them
selves and the traders up badly , and fluctua
tion ) ) tvero sharp and numerous. At the fin
ish December wheat was % c lower , May corn
Unchanged and Mar oats V&c lower. Provi
sions declined modcratly.
The email local receipts of grain and firmer
markets abroad garo the wheat market a
ntrong start. It had scarcely got under way ,
however , tvhon Pardrldge and Learning and
other commission houses whoso principal
clients are short sellers opened their flood
i Kates and swamped the early buyers. Decem
ber , which started at from 54He to ClUc bid ,
and with a sale or two nt 54c , was knocked
down to G3o In the course of fifteen min
utes. The short sellers , had but a few min
utes of triumph at that time. The people
who handle cash grain reported buyers of
their goods at an early hour of the session.
The reports from the- northwest were con
firmatory of what was telegraphed yesterday
regarding the falling off In fanners' deliveries
at Interior stations , but the- decreased move
ment was generally ascribed to the rainy
weather and consequent bad state of the
roads. The report that the czar ot Russia
was dead was a matter which tangled up
legitimate Influences for a short time until
the rumor was killed and the czar restored
to his. family and subjects. The price recov
ered equally from Its decline and Boon sold
up to G41&0 for December , May keeping step
In the advances and declines of from % c to
1-lGc , moro or less than that. The strength
61 corn at this time helped wheat. The fail
ure of a Now York stock house was the sig
nal for general selling again by the local
scalpers , under which the prlco dropped again
to 53ic for December. A few buying orders
at the decline quickly changed the feeling at
the crowd once more. The prlco on the last
named advance reached Blc. Primary mar
ket receipts were light at 749,021 bu , , which
Included two days' arrhuls at St. Louis. To
offset that the Atlantic port clearances were
only equal In wheat and flour to 220,000 bu. .
Including 10,000 bu. at Now Orleans. Clos
ing cables were firm and higher from Liver
pool and Berlin , but rather caster from Paris.
The last turn of the whirligig market was
downward. The boars took moro comfort out
of the Wall street falluro than the bulls
could find In all the favorable features ot the
day's news. The market declined to C3Vtc
under the bear hammering an ! clotod
Drm at C3o to 63 % c.
Corn was strong the greater part of the
icsslon. The selling tfrcsluro by heavy speculators -
ulators has given place to buying by a sim
ilar class. The strength of the cash situa
tion , which Includes the smallness ot ele
vator stocks , and very light receipts were
the main element of strength. October corn ,
which has ruled lower than the May future
recently , got to a good premium today , and
spot corn brought Uc premium' over sellers
01 the month. A sale of 100,000 bu. of No.
2 corn for shipment to Peorla , which was
reported early In the session , emphasized the
scarcity of spot stuff , but liberal offerings
of No. 3 for November and December de-
llvetlca received from points In Illinois found
no buyers at from 4c to 4'c per bu. dis
count under May prices. Local receipts were
only sixtyninecars , and 110 estimated for
tomorrow are likewise very light for this
season of tha year , TliB market , after being
strong nearly all day , closed weak , effected
by the decline In wheat. October opened at
50'c ' bid , advanced to BOVJc and closed at 51c ,
Or V&o Improvcpicnt for the day. May started
with buyers at QlVsC and from that up to
bl'/ic , compared with COTaC at the close yes
terday. It rose to 51c , slumped to G0c and
0o , and closed at GOT&c bid. '
Oats met fairly good tales , nnd after open
Ing a shade easier gradually firmed up. The
movements , of prices In corn continued to
Influence oat fluctuations principally , although
there were strong bullish features In this
market. The disposition to buy was very
good , and with local scalpers about the only
parties selling , considerable- strength was de
rived from that. May started steady at
34Uc , touched 84c ! , sold down to 33c , up
to 34c and 34V c , and shortly before the
Close sold at 34Vic , closing at 3lc.
The market for hog products ruled weak.
The prices , compared ivlth those at the close
yesterday , are 15c lower for pork , 6c lower
for lard and 7c off for ribs. Packers were
again the sellers. Liverpool market was
Quoted weak for meats and is Is 6d tower for
lard. Hog receipts were 17,000 head today
and 10,000 head are estimated for tomorrow.
Freight rates steady at lc for wheat , Hie
for corn and barley , and l4o ! for oats to
Buffalo.

the Improvement was moat marked , and ol

A prominent factor ot the situation was the

In the market to any appreciable extent.
Yesterday's covering movement was contin

So far this week receipt ! ) Of cattle liavo
> ccn nearly 7,000 heavier than last , while
hog supplies hare fallen oft about 3,000 head
and sheep nearly 2,000 head.
Late arrivals on Thursday swelled the re
ceipts to 8,647 head , -Milch was the largest
number of cattle ever received hero In an/
ono day. The largest previous run was 7,786
lead , which number arrived nearly a year
ago , on October 23 , 1893. A good share at
the cattle that came In Into on Thursday
were on today's market , so that , with the
4,900 fresh cattle tbcro were over 7,000 on
sale today when the market opened. Neatly
everything was direct from the range and
.hero was an unusual scarcity of beef for so
arge a number of cattle. Conditions were
all against the Boilers and they had to ac
cept a very material decline In prices. With
such ample offerings buyers could afford to
59 Indifferent , and In the faca of a decline
ot from 50o to 60o In Chicago this week
they were inclined to bo very bearish. Bids
and sales were all of from lOc to lEc lower
than Thursday , muklng a dc-cjlno since Mon
day of from 25o to 40c. Of course , the
under grades , being most abundant , suffered ,
the most , but oven the moro desirable grades
[ lid not escape. It was a dull , weak market
throughout and nothing like a complets clear'
anco was made.
Cows also shared In the general depres
sion. Including holdovers , there must have
nearly 1,000 loads on sale , and , although
the demand was quite active , both from local
ind outsldo butchers' , most sellers were per
fectly satisfied If able to work oft their hold
ings at within from lOe to IBc of Thursday's '
; > rcca. Calves were In good demand and
Inn , notwithstanding the liberal offerings.
Bulls , oxen and stags generally sold at a
shade under Thursday's quotations.
The market was simply oversupplled with
stackers and feeders , so that buyers were
able to shade- prices somewhat , In spile of
he continued active demand from all sources.
3ood to choice feeders -are quotable at from
P2.70 to $3.16 ; fair to good , from $2.40 to
2.70 , nnd common grades from (2.25 down.
