o ; THE OMAHA DAILY Bis : FRIDAY , OCTOBER 5 , 180J : . COMffifiCIAl AND FINANCIAL Grab Markets Opened Tirra. on European War NOWF , BUYING SHORTS WERE NUMEROUS ENOUGH Thnt r.lonicnl Acted on tlio Information from EnRlnml nnit l'r nco on tlio Sub ject of Ornvo Complications Slock * ami lioncli. CHICAGO , Oct. 1. Despite the apparent collapse of the European war scare , the grain markets werenrm today , closing with wheat lo higher , corn 2o higher for Oc tober and iyo higher for May. Oats show a gain of % c. Provlslom marred the gen eral harmony by acting weak and closing lower. The northwestern receipts at coun try points were reported to have fallen oft ibout 23 per cent ; spring wheat was In good demand for shipment east and a fear tliat & movement was about lo give further evi dence ol the liberal feeling of the article all contributed to the day's strength. Wheat pjiened nrm on what the ihorts raw In the morning papers on war. While that class of buying received a little stimulus from the cause referred to , buying for the long account did not Beetn Inspired by It to any extent. English consols recovered omo of yesterday's decline , and private cables reported nn abatement In England of the war scare , Liverpool was , how ever , reported-firm at llio opening for wheat , and Paris and Berlin were likewise quoted each a trifle higher. The bulls observed that the receipts at Minneapolis and Duluth were 929 cars , and that spoiled their ap petite for the time being. The buying Bhorts wore numerous enough , however , to keep Iho price Vie anovo yesterday's clos ing figures. December wheat opened with buyers nt 53&c , kept within the range of that and 62Hc. It however gradually weakened until ( hero were sellers for a matter of ten minutes or so nt C3c. Just then It began to be whispered about that 300,000 bu. of No. 2 spring wheat had been cold here for shipment , and lh.it caused a lively scramble among the shorts tor the offerings , which dried up suddenly when wanted , and the shorts bid December up to 53He. The primary market receipts gave further evidence of the approach of com parative scarcity. They amounted to only 760,000 bu. Export clearances from the- At lantic ports were light , amounting only to 291,000 bu , In wheat and flour together. Second cables .reported Berlin lower , but prices retaining the early slight advance , and Liverpool ' /id higher since yesterday for Ted winter. What was taken for confirma tion of the sale of the 300,000 bu , of spring wheat gave HID market another hoist , De cember ! touching on this spurt from G3c lo C3c. The confirmation referred to was the naming of the reputed purchasers , Ed- gerton & Wlnans , Armour & Co.'s name was mentioned as the reported sellers of the wheat. This stimulated buying , and another rise lo 54Ho took place. The mar ket ruled strong to the end , December touched El'/ic , and closed at 6lc. Reports of much smaller receipts nt country points In the northwest today was an element In the bullishness. Ilecelpta of corn were light , numbering only 51 cars , and only 80 are estimated for tomorrow. The moderate receipts , moderate estimated and actlvo demand for the- near deliveries of corn conspired to make a strong market for It. October corn , which closed yesterday at 4SHc , rose to G0"/4o , mid closed at the latter price. May opened Irregularly at from 6054o to 50 > c , and after fluctuating during the greater part of the forenoon between BOVSe nnd 49c , It be came very strong and sold up to from Elc to 61c , and closed at 60c. Country offerings were reported , to ba light and. the seaboard users of corn were said to be show ing more dcslro to buy. Business In a speculative way was fairly active. In oats there was a l.argo amount of stuff that c'liangcd hands and quite a big ad vance In prices. The firmness In corn , to gether with a generally good disposition to buy , were both Influential In causing oat values to advance. Sellers were quite numerous , but the buyers , principally shorts , Were considerably In the. majority. Trading was mostly all ecattored. Carrlngton-Han- Jiah , however , bought freely. May started % o higher than It closed yesterday , at SSftc , told down to 33o and up to 34'Ac , closing At from 3Htc to 31'Jc. A weak hog market and a strong op position to an advancei In prices by the packing Interests caused weakness In provi sions. BiiBlne&a was rather light and of ferings not pressed In large amounts. Pork broke 30c , lard 22c and ribs IBc. Later the strength in grain helped to some Im provement , and the losses at the close amounted to TAa only , In pork and ribs , and lOo In lard. HOK receipts were 27.000 bead. Freights were fair at l ? c for wheat nnd Vic for corn to Buffalo. The leading futures ranged as follows : Articles | LoW. NTOUK3 ANU BONDS. Slmre Speculation Vestertluyaa Cliarnc- tcrlzrcl by Marhotl Ktreiitll ( , NEW YORK , Oct. 4. The share specu lation today waa characterized by marked strength and a fair degree of activity , The Improvement In the marlict was due In some measure to Uio fact that the Anglo-Franco war scare waa proven to bo baseless and the moro favorable railroad reports for Septem ber , but the main factor was a demonstration of bull pools against the short Interest. Chicago cage Qas waa the- leader of the speculation and was taken In hand early by nn outside clique , which proceeded to- squeeze the shorts In the stock , the loaning rates having- been put up to 1-32 premium. Accompanying this movement waa a report that an agreement had been entered Into by the Chicago Oas and Municipal Gas companies for a division of territory. Under the covering which fol lowed , assisted by purchases for the long ac count Induced by the scarcity of the stock , the price moved up sharply to 72 % , a gain of % pep cant on the close yesterday , At the higher figures the bears made a drive on the stock , which caused a reaction ot 1 per cent to 71 % before noon. After midday the buying was resumed and became very heavy late In the afternoon , se-ndlng the stock up to 73 % , the last , being the highest price of the day and 3 % per coot above last nlfilit's closing , Sugar was forced to take eecond place In the dealings. An early advance of % per cent was followed by a decline of "fi per cent , < tia trading at this time being very light. It was not until later In the morning the share * came Into good buying demand , but strength of the market generally led loa covering movement In Sugar , which resulted In advancing the shares 2U per cent to 5 % , with only a Ilnal reaction of U per cent , Advances were established In the other In dustrials of 1 % per cent In Tobacco , 1 % per cent In Lead. HI per cent In Starch second preferred , General Electric H pur cent , and UUtllllni ; % per cent. The latter stock sold up 1 % per cent during the morning on sales Induced by President Qrcenhut's statement that the rebate system had been abolished and tiiat all rebate vouchers outstanding will be paid on maturity. During the afternoon the stock received but little support and sagged on Hi per cent. In the railway list the crangera were most active and Iho most notable event of the trading therein was a bear attack on Hock Island , causing break of 1U per cent from the opening price , which was U per cent above yesterday's closing. The stock was found to bowanting support at tto time , and torn * stop Lcj * order * wera uncovered. Burlington , which opened V4 per cent higher , receded Tfc per cent In sympathy , nntl St. Paul , which made an curly advance of % per conl , also fell off % per cent As there was no unfavorable news In these stocks 1h < 3 recovery was rapid , St. Paul re gained nil hut W per cent ot the loss and Hock Isl-ind aJJ buj % per cent , whllo Bur- llngtori iZcoVlreu all tli3 decline and made nn advance of % per cent. There was a. very strong buying movement during Iho last hour and the market closed strong , nnd at , or near , the best figures o ( the day. The advances above a fraction are : New Jersey Central nfid Ohio Southern , 1 per cent ; New England , 111 per cent , and St. Paul , Minneapolis & Manitoba , 354 per cent. Alton & Terre Haute declined 1 per cent and a very few other shares a. small frac tion. Tha bond market was , steady all day , and notaHy In the afternoon , when It moved In harmony- with the share specula tion. The trading was active , the sales aggregating $1,432,600. The Evening Post's London cablegram says : Full details of the cabinet meeting are not disclosed , but the restoration of con- fldencu la almost complete. Consols recovered most of the fall , and also ether securities , Including Americans. It Is believed the po sition of stocks Is materially strengthened by yesterday's sharp shake out of weak bulls. Americans closed under the best. The largo decrease In the Dank o [ England's rc- serve In today's statement was mainly con nected with Internal requirements of cash at end of the quarter. Coin and bullion were down 1,25(3,000 ( , of which -127,000 , were ex ported , 200,000 to Iloumanta. 120,000 to Egypt nnd 166,000 bars sold , while 50.000 came In from Australia and 11,000 from Portugal. There are rumors of a large- gold loan for Austria for currency purposes , Thla might possibly take gold from the United States , but no confirmation ot the rumor Is yet received. The Evening Post says : In the second hour a curious attack was made upon the mar ket , attributed , and no doubt rightly , to the strong and most expert combination of local bear speculators. This movement centered In Hock Island , -which was suddenly broken down 1 point. The other railway stocks did not so much follow the action of Hock Island as to cometo a temporary halt themselves. Meantime , however , covering movements In the Industrial stocks continued. So far this week compared with last cattle receipts exhibit an Increase of over 3,000 head , while there has. been a decrease of 2,000 hogs and 2,000 sheep. The supply of cattle was heavier than it has been for nearly a year , but was made up almost entirely of low grade western stock. There * were no native beef cattle on sale to amount to anything , and fat westerns were not to be found. On ac count of the big supply of. Inferior cattle and tlio Indifferent tone to reports from Chicago the market was about as dull and unsatisfactory as It. possibly could be. Dressed beef men would pay about steady prices for the few desirable beef steers on sale , but would bid all of lOc lower , when they could bo Induced to bid at all on the ordinary run of thin and rough stock. A good many of the cattle were late In arriv ing , and the trnda "dragged Its weary length along" through the greater part of the day. The general tone to the trade was very weak , and there were lots of cattle still In first hands nt the close. The market for cow stuff presented a marked contrast to the fat cattle trade , for In spite of the very liberal supply the de mand was active , and the seventy or more loads on sale sold readily nt full yester day's ' prices. Common and canning grades were In particularly vigorous request , and In some cases sold fully a dime higher than Wednesday. Veal calves sold freely at fully steady prices , and bulls and stags went at not quotably different figures. The stocker and feeder trade was active enough to suit the most exacting. Both sup ply and demand were liberal ; all grades and conditions were wanted at steady to stronger prices , and a big volume of business was transacted. Good to choice feeders are quotable at $2.75 to (3.25 ; fair to good , $2.40 to $2.70 , and common grades from $2.25 down , Representative sales : DRESSED BEEP. No. Av. Pr No. Av. Pr. No. Av.
