The jobbing trade oC Omaha continues lo
Yorr fair shape , that portion , at least , which
t' , embraces staple lines of seasonable
goods' . As noted a week ago , tlio country Is
buying groceries , dry goods , boots and shoes ,
and , whllo not buying as freely as tn some
seasons , the trade Is , reaching very satis
factory proportions. In dry- goods the vol
ume of business exceeds that ot former sea.-
sons , owing to the largo number of new
customers that have been coming to Omaha
during tho'past month ,
The jobbing trudo has been something of
a aurprlso to a good many -who were ex
pecting to see business , completely paralyzed
by the short crops , and who were unpre
pared for tlio reasonably good business that
has been experienced. The fact that stocks
In the country have been allowed to run
down to the very lowest possible limit la
the apparent cause for business being aa
- good os it Is. Merchants have been putting
off buying just , as Ion ? as they possibly can ,
and are now forced to stock up. Cold
weather would no doubt act as a powerful
stimulus upon trade , as It would start up
business In the country and hasten the reStocking -
' Stocking process1 , It would also send In a
good many supplementary orders ( rom mer
chants who placed very light ordcrn lo
commence with , and who will ba forced lo

the country.
. The bank clearings at Omaha show a
'slight Increase , amounting to n , little over
0 par cent. Whllo this Is not BO laigc as the
business men at this point would llko to
see , and does not coma up to the Increase
reported by some other cities. It Is ahead
ot the average for the whole country. Col
lections In the country are holding up re
markably well , when everything Is taken
Into consideration.
THE MANUFACTURERS.
The manufacturers of tha statn have been
roatojiably busy during the past week , and
v'he majority of them report business as In
pretty fair shape. Their association com
pleted the election of directors for the differ
ent cities and towns of the state early In the
week , and on Friday the directors from all
parts of the state met In Omaha and elected
officers lor the coining year.
The association Is preparing for an active
campaign the coming winter amO will try lo
Increase the Interest In home Industries.
I'ubllo meetings and banquets will be held In
the various cities of the state for this pur
pose.
pose.Miller & Egan of Nebraska City wrllo as
follows regarding the construction of water
yrorkn at Syracuse : "We have recently been
awarded & contract for the erection of a
water works system at Syracuse , this state.
"Wo wera awarded the contract on the
grounds that we were homo men , although
there were several bids as low as wo were.
The board of trustees ot Syracuse expressed
a deklre to use Nebraska workmen and Ne
braska made material , and vre have com
plied with their wishes by placing our order
for all the material , and , in some Instances ,
at A higher price , with the following manu
facturers : Wilson & Drake , Omaha , stand
plpo and boilers ; tho" Phoenix Foundry com
pany ; Omaha , hydrants and cast Iron spe
cials ; the Crane , company , Omaha , valves ,
wrought Iron'plpo , pumping engine , lead and
packing ; M. II ; Collins , Omaha , order for all
cast Iron pipe. All those goods will bo manu
factured In JOmalia. with the - exception
ception 'of "cast Iron pipe and engine. ' Wo
did , tha next beat thing In ordering 'these
lattOr supplies through Omaha agents. There
are ninny towns In Nebraska that contem
plate the 'building ot water works , and If
they will do as the Syracuse people have
done they will help home- Industry and the
development of Nebraska manufacturing en
terprises very materially. "
LIVE STOCK MARKET.
The receipts of good cornfed steers have
been very light.all the week , and the. same
might bo said ot choice range beeves. Owing
to the scarcity of good beevtB , in the face of
a good demand , the market has been .about
steady on the best grades , but common cattle
have been very plenty and the market on
such weak , The1 fact Is the great majority
of the catle arriving here has been made up
. of feeders , butchers' stock a'nd trash of all
kinds. On. Tuesday a bunch of choice corn-
ted catllo brought $6 , which -was the highest
price' paid at this point In over two years.
The'feeder market broke last week under the
Influence- large receipts and a sudden
stoppage In the demand. After experiencing
a decided drop In prices the country seemed
unable to withstand the temptation and com
menced buying again. As u result the market
ket- gained rapidly In strength toward the
close of the week.
The liog market , after breaking rapidly
during the. early part of the week , halted
on Friday anfl took an upward turn on Sat-
- - - - " ' advance , howovcr. Is not to bo

dtchtlrig that the bottom has been reached.

Traction after a heavy break , Induced In
some degree by heavy buying on the
part of largo packers , it was something ol
a surprise to those -who had not watched the
I course of events to sco the packers auddenlj
1 become anxious for hogs at the close of the
week , after being apathetic for some time.
The fact Is that for the first tlmo In three
or four weeks hogs will pay out , figured era
a basts of October provisions. Fur some
time back lioga have been so high In com
parison with provisions that it was no objccl
to the packers to operate.

Albert Andriano , local superintendent for
Snow , Church & Co.'a Mercantile agency ,
lays :
"The warm -weather during- the last week
md a very perceptible Inlluence on business
n all lines. The falling off was , of course ,
most noticeable tn retail lines. Seasonable
weather Is a necessary condition of good
justness to retailers , even In the most pros- '
> erous times. Trade this season has thua
'or been very light and Is eas-lly affected
by the slightest unfavorable condition , Ite-
: iillers nro accustomed to see their trade
luctualo with the weather. In a light sca-
Hon , such aa the present promises to be ,
business Is tnoro dependent upon the
changes ot weather than usual.
"Consumers are limiting their purchases ,
as far as possible , to the necessaries of
life , and rnaivy are buying wearing apparel
only when forced to by the exigencies of
'he season.
"Beyond a slight falling off In order * dur-
.ng the latter part of the week , there are
no material changes In the wholesale mar
ket. Dry goods and boot and shoe dealers
report a very satisfactory trade , furniture
houses are doing a fair business and In
other lines the situation Is about the same
ns lost week. Reports from other trading
centers ore very encouraging and there Is
every Indication that the reported revival of
uuslness Is of a permanent nature.
"At Omnha there seems to be a growing
endency to exert every Inllence to stlmu-
ate business. The canal proposition Is about
to be submitted to the people. This project
should be actively pushed and all the bene
fits of Its successful consummation inatlo
apparent to the voters of the county.
"Work on the Irrigation ditches In west
ern counties Is progressing , nnd , with n
continuation of agitation of this nature , the
entire western part of the state will soon
be a network of ditches. In those- sections
where running streams are not available
many farmers nre sinking wells and put-
MnK in their own plants.
"Some weeks since I made special refer-
nce to the reports which have been spread
by eastern papers to the effect that the
western part of this state Is being depopu
lated. Tills Is such a glaring misstaternent
of facts that It should not be passed by un
noticed. It Is admitted that many people
are. leaving the western part of the state ,
but a careful examination of the real facts
gives the matter an entirely different phase.
Most ot these emigrants nre stiuattcrs and
poor renters , who , In the most prosperous
times , were possessed of very limited means
and wlio have been unable to hold out un
der the recent strain , engendered not only
by tl-,5 failure of crops , but by the business
depression. Had llicse snme people lived In
any other state. It Is doubtful If they could
have held on as long as they did In Ne
braska.
"In good times there Is no state more
prosperous thnn this , and the liberal ex
tension of credit practiced by the small
dealers here Is the 'only reason that many
of thcpir emigrants have been nble to hold
on up to the present. Many country store
dealers have been forced to the wall by
their. Inability to realize on their heavy out-
stondlnirs. In many cases out of all proportion
tion to their capital. With this lesson be
fore their eo'ea nnd the contraction of credit
which has been gradually taking place at
jobbing- centers , country merchants have
refused further credit In. many Instances
and Insisted on n cash basis In others.
With little or no credit and no means , many
of these people are moving eastward.
Where they nre going nntl how they expect
to Improve their condition Is an unsolved
problem.
"According to rc'port , they would rfo much
better at home and would certainly betaken
taken oare of. Die persistency with which
such reports arc repeated In eastern publi
cations Is emlnestly unjust and reflects lit
tle credit on the Intelligence and responsi
bility of their Informants. "

CIIIGAQO , Sept. 29. Helped by good buy-

'revisions acted firm and cUned with a mod
erate gain. Oats followed corn and closed
c higher for May.
Wheat opened strong for a change at S3V4c
'or December , compared with BSHo at the
close yesterday. The market ruled firm for
lalt an hour or so , then had a slight back
set , which , however , was of short durallon <
: t sold sparingly at 53c , and then worked
back to from B3V4c to 63 § c , with an appearance -
anco of firmness at that time which the
shorts did not relish. The regular routine
market news afforded no explanation of the
firmness , nearly everything point UK to tha
probable aggravation of those features ot
ho situation which have hitherto caused so
many ol the traders to sell confidently on
every slight rally. The buying of aom 2SO.-
> 00 or 300,000 bu. yesterday by W. R. L.mn
InHuenced perhaps 106 pit speculators who
may have taken a matter of 25,000 bu. each
of the market. This had some effect on the
bull side. The hog consumption of wheat Is
coming more plainly In evidence. Today's
advance In the face of a generally unfavora
ble outlook proved that the foregoing consid
erations were gaining weight. The week's
exports of wheat and flour from both coasts
as reported by Bradstreet amounted to 2,600-
)00 ) bu. , against 3,537,000 , bu. on the wesk be
fore , and 3,490,000 bu. on the corresponding
week of last year. Foreign markets were all
weak and lower. Another heavy Increase In
the visible supply Is looked for on Monday.
Business was fairly brisk and well sustained
during the resalon. December near the close
rose to 53Tjc , and closed at frcm 53c to
53c. The taking ot all the No. 1 northern
and No. 1 hard spring wheat In New York
at fitjjc over December by the millers ot that
place helped to sustain the advance toward
th close. *
The ccrn market was strong and recovered
all ot yesterday's decline and Vic In addition.
Thcro was a sudden drying up "of ths Dn > rIngs -
Ings , as reported by receiving houses. The
country advices were very generally to the
effect that reserves of old corn are very light
and new corn Is not expected to bo In a con
dition to move much before December. To
day's receipts wejo 239 cars , and 138 are ox >
ected for Monday. Opened at 49c , sold for
) moment as low as 49Vic , and near the close
It was worth 5Q94c. with 60Vic bid as the ses
sion was ending.
A fairly active session was passed In oats
and values nro all higher. Sympathy with
corn was chiefly Influential In causing the
firmness. The greater part of the trading
was scattering , and -the shipment sales
scarce. Carrlngton-Hannah probably bought
as many oils as any other firm. May started
at an advance of J,4c over , yesterday's last
quotation at 33c. touched 33Vic and ad
vanced to 33c , at which price It was of
fered nt the close. October closed % c higher
at 28Hc bid. The provision market was
flrrawith good general buying by outsiders
anfl packers.
Hog 'receipts ' were 10,000 head , and their
value was quoted lOc higher. The week's
receipts were only 00,205 , and only 100,000
are looked for next week , Prloes for Janu

of yesterday's session are So higher for pork ,
