pVhen the \oto was asked for on the question
iC time the rates should become effective1 , It

SAN' FRANCISCO , Sept. 25. The Southern
Pacific company is making preparations to
increase winter travel over the Sunset route
amPto tills end will offer superior advantages
to tempt the travelers nway from other
rofds. Beginning with November 1st , a first
class train will leave every Thursday from
New Orleans for San Francisco , and similar
trains will run from San Francisco to New
Orleans It Is claimed by railroad officials
lliat these trains will he unsurpassed west of
Chicago. The cars will bo vcstibulcd , with
a first class dining car , a smoking car with
writing tables and stationery , bath room und
barber shops , and the whole- train will bo
hct.tcd by steam and lighted by gas. The
tlinu from Neiv Orleans to San Francisco will
bo seventy-seven and n lull hours end sev
enty-nine hours eastbound , The change will
reduce the time to Now Orleans twenty-nine
hours and to New York thirty and a half
hours , giving the fume quick service as over
the Central route. A connection will ba made
at New Orleans without an hour's delay , the
paisengers being transferred to a limited
train -on Lhe Piedmont Air line for Now York.
Speaking of tlio above. ' General Manager
Dickinson of the Union' Pacific said tlmt the
Increase in train service had been contem
plated by the Southern Pacific for snmotlme.
'Sixty ' hours was first talked ol for making
the run between San Francisco ami New Or
leans , but this was abandoned , My Impres
sion Is tlmt the rastbound time Js to bo
about eighty hours. This will materially re
duce the time between Sail Francisco and
New Orleans. Tlio train Is to run once a
week , the volume of business not being
deemed sufficiently large to warrant two
trains per week.
"Thcro Is llttie In the railroad situation of
any moment. The receivers are still 1n New
York grinding away on Hie clctnlls ol the
system. Freight Is moving : steadily , and
upon some divisions the men have all they
can do to keep trafllc open ,
"As to the Hurllngton extension I am of
the opinion Iliat the Union Pacific will not
ba very far behind to all North Pacific coast
points with the exception ot Helena and
Spokane. Wo will Increase the running tlmo
of our trains If necessary and will < lo every
thing In the way of perfection of service to
hold the trade we have gat In the western
country tapped by the Northern I'aclflc. "
A representative of a Chicago line talking
of the determination of tlio Southern Pa
cific to send Us swell train over the Sunset
Route said : "Thnt'a tlie way with the South
ern Pacific , not satisfied with the earth ,
they want a portion ot the atmosphere fenced
off for their own particular use. When they
get Into a tight place and the fight In the
south becomes very litter they call upon
the Union Pacific , Burlington. Rio Orando
and Hock Island to protect their Interests ,
but when II comes to a question ot Increased
train service , they send the train via the
southern route , totally Ignoring the Central
route. " _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
