least two of the lines emphatically ilenlci
the story , but no less a person than Q ncra

Hock Island No , R , Is responsible for tlio as
scrtlon that the boycott ngalnst the Unlot
Pacific will be lifted and that the gateuayi
for western business will open October 1.
For three years almost the Union 1'aclHi
has been compelled to light the combined op
position of the Rock Island , Burlington am
Illo Grande on account of having closed th
gateways to these roads In 1891 , a boycot
against the * Union Pacific resulting In 1892
While the Union Pacific may not have lost i
great deal of business through this policy , 1
la well known that it suffered consldcrabl
annoynnoe > , and General Passenger Agen
Lomax has been anxious to straighten ou
the tangle. However , there has been n
good ground upon which to demand a settle
nient until the northern lines began playtni
"horse" over the differentials , when the gen
eral passenger agent of the Union Pacific
taking advantage ot the situation , made i
proposition to the southern lines to stop th
war and get together on a basis satlsfactor ;
to all Interests. This has been accepted , an
during the meetings ot the transcontlnenta
association in Chicago this week Messri
Sebastian of the Rock Island. Francis of th
Ilurllngton. Hooper oE the Rio Grande an
Lomax of the Union Pacific will complete th
details looking to a resumption of transcon
tlncntal business along old lines.
When the Union 1'aclflc refused to tak
trafTlco for western points except at the Mis
sourl river It put on the defensive" com
petlng lines , nnd they were not slow to re
illze tlio position which the action of th
Union Pacific placed them In. Instead o
accepting , the situation they proceeded t
give the Southern Pacific business whereve
slblo and iiulctly stuck the knife Int
the "Overland" wherever possible. Ho\
much the Union Pacific suffered throug
.ho combination will never bo known , bu
that It did suffer the auditor of the passen
ger accounts would undoubtedly guarded !
admit if approached.
Now all the heartburnings , the rccrlmlno
lions ere at an end , for the compact ha
about been sealed and a new order c
things will be inaugurated commencing Oe
tober 1 , when the Union Pacific will throi
oipen the Ogden and Denver gateways fo
business -west of Huntlngton Out for point
like Boise City , Tampa or Dillon busljics
must be given the Union Pacific at the Mil
sourl river under Its demand for the Ion
haul.
haul.This
This action on the part of Mr. Lomax wl
tend to harmonize the Interests betwee
the roads and will have a decided tendenc
to strengthen the lines at the Missouri rive :
Major Hooper of the Rio G-rando was en
phatlc In his statement that some such ai
tlon as outlined above might be expectei
and thought It would result In good for a
Interests.
Speaking of the Rio Grnnde's earning ;
ho stated that he thought they were nevs
moro prosperous and expected them to she
better than last year , notwithstanding
was "Centennial" year. "Colorado , " sal
he , "Is in magnificent condition ; we ha\
got crops , gold In abundance and evoryboi ]
Is becoming Impressed with the Idea that tl
tldo of depression has turned. "
Upon the question as to whether a tran
continental agreement would result from tl
meetings now being held in Chicago Maji
Hooper was not Inclined to say much , c :
cept that prospects seemed br'ght for
modified agreement , but this was pure coi
Jecturo on his part ,
Snutliorn Pacific's Thrcnt.
"The threat of the Southern Pacific to d
mand local rates on the Shasta route fro
Portland should the northern lines persist I
their demands for unconscionable differentia
Is a body blow. " said a well known rallroi
man yesterday. "Should the Southei
Pacific people enforce the threat It wou
bring the roads to their knees sooner thi
anything I can now recall. The northoi
lines are unreasonable , Mr. Receiver McNe
of the Oregon Railway and Navigation cot
pany particularly so , although It Is clear
bo seen that back of him Is the Gre
Northern. It Is another case of tlm vol
being that of "Jacob , but the hands are tl
hands of Hsau. ' Controlling as It does Ca

The City Kleutrlclnn Milking li 1Iinrnuh
JiKpoctlnu of I.ur ( ; Structure * .
City Electrician Schurlg IB working on a
complete Inspection of nil buildings of Im
portance In the city. The Inspection has been
partially completed , and several liulldlnga
have been found In which the wiring was de
fective. In these cases the bad work was
condemned and the owners notified that they
would liavo to make such nltcratlons asvero
necessary In order to meet the provisions ot
the ordinance.
It Is rather surprising that most of the
property owners seem to regard the order to
repair their wiring ns an Imposition rather
than a necessary precaution tor their own
safety. It a ptcco of wiring Is condemned
they nrgue that It has been In there for two
or three years , as the case may be , and
nothing has happened , tlu-rcforc , U will ba
safe to leave It In for an unlimited period tn
the future , This sort ot argument does not
go , however , and the objectionable apparatus
has to be replaced.
