Conn , Sept. 13.-The little village of Tliomp'ontoRn , one mlle south of here , wus excited about 9 o'clock this nioni- I"K by a report that Clnrencu Ward , the 10-ear-old son of Ferdlnaril Word , the ex- binker nnd llimnctcr of Ne York , had been kidnaped form the home oj tils Kiiardlnn , Mr. Frederick Orcen. The boy's father has sev eral limes tried to get possession of the child but without success The boy has made his home vvlth his uncls , Mr CJreen , In ThompMrntown , since the death of his mother , while Ms father was In Sing Slug. Mr. Green was app luted the ljo > 's guardian by the. New York courts , and has charge of the proputy lift to Cl.in-iioe by his mother. Ferdinand Ward , since hla re lease from prison , has made several attempts to gain Ihe custody of the boy through the courts , but bus failed SPRINGFIELD , Mass. , Sept 13. Ex-Dep uty Sheriff Jossph C. Love of Webster UoU n prominent part In regaining possession of the Ward boy , who has been for several years under the care of bis uncle , II. R Green , ot ThompsontoHU , Conn , where he was placed en the death of his mother , Mrs Ward. It Is known that a fortune of about * 50 000 was bequeathed to the boy , or held In trust for him , from the estate uf his mother Ferdi nand Ward has been trying to get possession of the boy. Last night Ward -vvent to Web ster In c in ' with and pan j' an accomplice se cured rooms at the hotel. He took a team , and , with his companion as a driver , went to ThonipsontovMi , Conn , on a prospecting tour. Nothing was accomplished , h.wever , on this trip , and they returned to Webster to pass the night. This morning the man who was with Blr. Ward hired a team again and took a Webster man for n drive. They went again to Thompsontonn , There they found the bay , Clarence Ward , In school with his mates. Ward's ace mpllco Becurrd an Interview with the young fellow uiul told htm Ills fath r was waiting to hive achance to talk with him Either by the boy's contuit or foice he was placed In the carr'age and \\n& laken by the two men from the school In the direction of Webster. Mr.Green the bjy's uncle , started In pursuit. The race to Webster was a close one and Sheriff Lo\e met the two parties not for from town. He allowed the kidnaping party to pass him , but as soon as he learned from the pursuers the nature uf the chase , hent once turned about and joined In the pur suit. In Webster the boy and his captors were found at the Joslyn house , where the team had been put Into , the stables. The boy's captor , whose name Is unknown , had taken him to a room In the hold. Mr. Green attempted to take possession of the boy and take him back home , but the raptor objected and a struggle resulted Sheriff Love , who was waiting In the corridor , heard the sound of the struggle and went at once to the room He demanded of the man who held possession of Clarence Ward -what pa pers he had to show his right lo the- boy The man stated he had none , but that Fer dinand Ward would soon appear with papers showing his right. Sheriff Love at once said that until those papers were produced the boy must remain in possession of his uncle. Green It was found Ferdinand Waid had been consulting a local lawyer and getting out papers ot habeas corpus. When It was found that Mr. Green bad taken the boy across the line Into Connecticut Mr. Ward soon left the place. Where he has gone IH not known. There was no attempt made to arrest him , because the olllcers did not feel sure he had no right to the child , and under the circumstances It would be perhaps hard to prove the crime of nbductlon , ISO.IT ll'ITIl .1 1'11,11'i , , . ! NEW YORK , Sept. 13 An exposition has been given In the government ship oft the Dattery of the model of a fin-propelled boat , designed by Mr. Frank Taff of Whitestone , Long Island. Itc proposes to submit It to the naval authorities The model Is fitted vvlth a small vertical engine of three-quar ters Inch stroke , worked by steam , with gasoline- for fuel. There are fish-shaped fins on either side of the hull , Just abaft the amldshlp section , a few Inches apart and midway between the ivnterllno and the keel The thick , or head ends of the fins are fixed In Ihe ends ot the thrust shafts , the web ends ex tending aft. There are two thrust shafts extending across the hull , each shaft having a fin at cither end. The shafts work alternately , counterbal ancing each other and keeping the boat steady. The main surface of the ( in , which Is called the web , Is thinned toward the edge. The thrust of the shafts drives the fins out from the sides of the vessel and forces it ahead. About two minutes alter the gasoline lamp was put under the boiler , twenty pounds of bteam was generated The model was launched and glided out toward midstream , followed by rowboats , which subsequently picked It up. Engineers who witnessed ( hs work of the fins were both amazed and pleated with the performance. The action ol the ( In is such that there Is no dead water and there Is also no drag. The water Is held tight. , Jhere Is no wave or foamy water produced. It Is claimed that a steamer having fins with the same surface as propellers have would make better time under the same expenditure of power applied to the propeller - pellor and that power would be secured from a greatly reduced Initial pressure to the extent that one ton of coal would do the work of four tons or more now used.
