1 THE OMAHA DAILY BEE ; SATURDAY , SEPTEMBER 8 , . 189k n COMMERCIAL m FINANCIAL Reports of Russian Importation of Eje Oaused aSonsatlou. BULLS IN WHEAT AND C'ORH DISTURBED Corn Opened with n Oonllntmtlon tit thn lluylnc IVvriMYhlf.h.Slrnck thn Mar ket Thur.Hilar AfIrriiixtii Stock * encl llniul * . CHICAGO. Sept. 7. The public cablet do Hoi often furnish a sensation , " but today's Iondon dispatch to ( ho Board of Trade proved nn exception. Two cargoes of Kus- glan barley were reported for shipment , to Now York at a prlcfr equivalent to about 40o for forty-eight , pounds , duty paid , ex- vessel , at the latter port. That Russian In vasion at New York was of much advantage to the bears In the grain market. Corn declined 2c per bu , for September > and October deliveries , and wheat brought from CSlic for December down to from B7c to 57'/&c , closing % c lower than yesterday , September oats finished tower and provisions closed practically unchanged. Wheat averaged strong during the fore noon. It opened with nn addition to- yes terday's closing price for December at from ViC to % c per bushel , but had some little difficulty In maintaining the advance , owing to occasional lapses of ( ho corn market. Business was heavier than on the day be fore , but It'was far from reaching Its usual autumnal gait. The receipts here and In the northwest gave some Indications of fallIng - Ing off , 214 carlo.icU being nil that was re ported here , 348 at Minneapolis and 135 at Duluth , The aggregate receipts of 993,000 bushels at the primary western markets was , however , still too close to the 1,000,000 , bushel mark to permit of much comfort to the bulls from any falling off of any farm ers' deliveries. A matter which caused con siderable disquiet to the bulls In bath wheat and corn was the reported sale of two car goes of Russian barley at Odessa for ship ment to Now York. Whether barley Is being Imported for feeding purposes or for malting , .is claimed by some , It will In any case set free an equal quantity of American grain for one or Iho other of these pur poses , and thus Its effect became all the more bearish the longer It .was consld i-rcJ , and finally It broke both corn and wheat. The opening price of December was nt from liSc to uSVac , anil after thnt the tendency WPS generally downward. It did not suffer much until after about two hours of the session had passed , hut It broke badly after that , losing nil but abaut % c of y.cs terday's advance , the closing quotation being from & 7c to 67',6 c. t The corn market opened with a continua tion of the buying fever which struck the market yesterday afternoon , but In the course of the session the speculative wind veered completely around and prices had a severe break. September corn sold early at G86c , nnd May opened at from DG'/c to GG'v&c. Later , after the sensation of the day had worked Itself well Into the under standings of the crowd here and ( ho outsldo people to whom It was telegraphed , the market broke badly. September dropped to EGic ! , October to G ! > % c. and May to 65Vic. nnd there was but little subesequent recov ery. Some of the country holders realized profits on the opening bulge nnd the local contingent sold heavily. Closing prices were near the bottom of the day's range at G8c for September , 56M.C for October , and from B5V4C to 65o for May , For the first time In a long- while the oats market showed some Independence. At the start prices were steady to a shade firmer , but Instead of going still higher with the fluctuation in corn , they gradually declined. Thera were few buying orders and outside points especially were prominent In selling. September opened at 30&c , sold to 30Vic and weakened to 30c , closing at 29c. The provision market was quiet , but linn , nnd did not take fright like tua grain markets at the Russian Invasion. Hogs werev light at 17,000 head , and only 10.000 head are looked for tomorrow. Price * for the products were rather Inclined to advance , but In the end closed without change , excepl as regards January pork , which Is 5c lower. It Is certain the opinion Is general that Distilling Is not a safe Investment by outsiders. The clique , which haa been manFpu- latlnc the stock during the past weeks , was the moving Inlluenco therein 'today. Heavy offerings In the early dealing ) caused a break of IRfcc. but before noon a recovery of 1'A rer cent had taken place. The changes In the rest of the list on the day's transactions were merely fractional , and were nearly all In the direction of lower values. The market was weak during the greater part of the day , and was decidedly heavy In tone at the close. The bond market was rather heavy during thu morning , but gained strength as tlie djy advanced , and was rather strong nt the close. A majority ot the Issues dealt In show an advance. The Evening Post says : There was less disposition to trade In stocks toduy than on other occasions Iti the week , and except for some desultory hammering at the granger stocks In the afternoon , nothing ot consequence quence was ; done up to the close. ' The Evening Post's London cablegram says : The stock markets were dull today for flrsUclass Investment stocks. Ameri cans were generally lower , closing dull. The best opinions favor a further but not serious decline. The trade returns for August are bad. The Imports are down 'to 7oO,000 and the exports 1,000.000. The heavy fall In values partly accounts for the figures , still they are disappointing , and give no certain Indication of a revival of trade. Y. , claims the champion rattlesnake hunter tn the person of 16-year-old Mary Burton. Early In the reason she killed a rattlesnake In her father's yard and cut off the rattles. Since then she has developed a craze for collecting the rattles of these snakes and spends her time In huntIng - Ing the renemcus reptiles. Up to date , says the New YorUJSun , she has killed twenty- elRlit rattlesnakes , and from them has ob tained twenty perfectly matched sets of rattles. Bich set had nine tattles or seg ments. The other eight seta are odd ones , ranging from four to ten rattles lu ri set. The women of that part of the state seem to have taken an amazing courage In deal ing with snakes this season. A report from Hancock says that Mrs. Frank Tower of that place was on her way home after dark the other evening when she heard a rattlesnake sound Us rattles In the weeds at the road side , She hurried home , Bald nothing to any one , got a lantern and a club , and re turned to the spot where she had heard the rattler. It was there still , and sprang Its rattlers as soon as Mrs. Tower approached. She turned her light on It , saw U lying called ready to strike , and smashed Its head with a club. The snake was an immense fellow , measuring over five feet , but It carried only nine rattles. A youns girl named Henrietta Quick , across the Delaware In Lackawaxen , Pa. , heard n noise among her chickens. She went out and saw a rattlesnake maneuvering to capture one. She cut Its head on with a hoe. This one had thirteen rattles. Sayj M , W. Selby , Muncle , III. : "Last summer a coat miner came to my drug store one night , half dead with cramps. There was no doctor to be had. He asked mo If I had anything that would help him. I opened a bottle of Chamberlain's Colic , Chol era and Diarrhoea Remedy and gave him a large dose , In twenty minutes his pain was all gone.
