visions , finished strong at liberal advances
all around.
The price of wheat during the first halt
hour of the session cave evidence ol little
chance In Ihe Ideas ot the speculators re
garding Its value , Klve minutes after the
opening the early orders Irom country cus
tomers appeared to be exhausted nnd the
price of December , which for three minutes
bad ruled about Vic higher than Saturday's
closing price , returned to about that level
ngaln. In the course of the next 16 minutes
there was another slight rise. The market
began to weaken again , when the figures of
the vUlblo supply statement wcro received.
DCCJtuber , which started at 50iiC ? , sold to
COV6c , and recovered again to G7c , reacted
from Gfl&c to GO&c , when the visible supply
was Indicating an Increase of about 2,000,000
bu. When the amount of the Increase
was found to be 2,178.000 bu.
the market recovered a trifle In some
covering purchases by the scalpers upon their
finding that outside selling orders were not
forthcoming , even with such tempting In
ducements. The strength In corn near the
end of the session put some fresh vigor Into
the action o'f the longs In wheat and caused
an' advance to a fraction above Its previous
highest point , 67 Ac being quoted for an In
stant , cloning at G7c.
Corn did not show a great deal of strength
Immediately nt the opening , but It did later ,
and It kept the shorts on the broiler dtir ng
the greater part of the session. The weekly
local bulletin for Iowa wns received by a
house here , who said thai It reported GO per
cent of the corn crcp cut for fodder In many
uf lte ] southern counties of that state and
that as high as 80 per cent of It had been
similarly treated In some other counties.
That was perhaps the main reason for the
strength which was developed In corn.
8liortn came In freely , but n good number
of the big local shorts stood pal. There
was a decrease of 232,000 bushels In the
i mount on ocean passage. The visible sup
ply Increased 114.000 bushels , as compared
with an Increase of 177,000 bushels last
year. May corn , which on Saturday closed
at G3c , started Irregularly at from G2c to
G3V4c. Tlio.su were the lowest prices of
HIP day. It rose on the ilrst swell to G4e.
and after resctlng to 53ct It advanced
again to G4c , and there were some few sales
at an high as G4',4c , closing at G4c.
Today almost everything In oats was
bearish. The SPSSon was active at times ,
nnd during the day quite a fair business was
transacted , mostly local , however. Septem
ber started steady at 29 , Jc , sold tip to ' 'S'sC ,
was weakened slightly by the visible supply
and sold back to 29c. rallied again and
closed at 29c bid. Dearer hogs , higher
corn and buying by the. Anglo-American
1'ecklng company wcro the principal reas'-'ns '
given for another cons'derable advance In
the price of provisions. The market opened
firm , gradually Improved , and In the end
U wjs quite strong at the highest , prices of
the day. Compared with Saturday night ,
January pork Is 22' c higher , January lard
2Gc higher , and rll > s lOc higher.

Today's receipts were 4,500 cattle , 8,000
hogs nnd 177 slicep , as against 2,903 cattle ,
1,983 hogs nnd C7 sheep yesterday , and 3,811
cattle , 8,054 hogs and 278 sheep on tlio cor
responding day ot last week. Some of Ihe
trains did not arrive until late , the last one
coming In about mlilday , BO that the market
was delayed somewhat.
CATTLE The receipts of cattle were
large , and were mndo up of western
rangers and native cows and stock
Cattle principally. Thcro were very lew
native beef steers of any consequence. One
bunch ol corn fed natives Bold at ? l,10 ,
which was the first sale at over $4. since
Tuesday of last week. The supply of range
steers , was quite large , The market on beef
steers was generally about steady. The sup
ply of cows , both native and western , was
large. The buyorn started out bidding lower
on the best cow stun on the ground that
that class of cattle had been selling too
high. The canners and medium grades sold
at about steady prices. Stockers ntv feeders
were In large supply , but there wcro a good
many buyers In from the country , and the
trade was a little more brisk than It lias
been on some days. With a fair demand
sellers were enabled to obtain about steady
