Up the Work ,
The board of directors of the Young Men's
Christian association held Its regular meeting
Thursday evening at tlia association building
and took up the plans ( or the work of the as-
relation for the coming year. In looking
forward to the winter and In consideration of
the fact that on account of the llnanclal de
pression the association liad run somewhat
behind In Its receipts , Including a deficiency
from lout year , the finance committee recom
mended a very considerable reduction In the
budget of expenses for the balance ol the
fiscal year , to May 1 , 18D5 , ol $3,400. $ ,
Mr.Valtomeyer , the financial secretary ,
presented his resignation to take effect
November 1.
The reduction In expenses , while It will
prevent the association from extending Its
norh iia planned , will not lo any extent
cut tloun the privileges of the association to
young men. The salaries of the secretaries
and employes of the association were all cut
from 10 lo 15 per cent. More dependence
will bo placed upon the volunteer services of
the members than before lo assist In extend
ing the work.
The gymnasium \\l\l \ be opened on Monday
evening next for the regular fall work , but
without any special formalities at this time.
The railroad men's class will be held at 11:30 :
a. m. , theboys' class at 4 p. in. , the regular
business men's anil lawerg' class at 5:15 : and
the young men's class at 8:15. : Everything
has been put In excellent order and will be
under the direction of Mr. Cook as usual ,
aided by a corps of competent volunteer as-
Hlstants. Plenty of dressing lockers are
provided and arc ready tor the use of new
members as rapidly as they may apply.
The evening classes , will fully measure up
to last year , and an exhibition of the best
work of the Young Men's Christian associa
tion classes of this country will take place
In the parlors early In Octobrr , Just prior
to the opening of the classes. A strong
entertainment course U being aiinnged. and
In addition to this n. course ol entertainment :
by I lie best local talent will aUo begin In
January , which will be at a very slight
charge to the members. The membership
committee reports that It has made a gain
In the membership In tin last month , and
that they now have 1,267 men on the rolls.
Same decrease has been noted on account at
members who have removed from the city.
The reception committee has In mind a
scries of receptions to be given to the young
men of Omaha by the various young people's
societies of the churches , also a scries of
"Nights of Nations , " which will attract the
young men of different nationalities to the as
sociation.
There Is also $ mteinplated a series of com
mon sense talks on Ihe economy of living ,
establishing a home , getting along In life ,
etc. , nnd with as much sound advice as can
be given by men who hate studied economy
of house keeping , living , etc. They also
plan to repeat the scries of law lectures
and advanced bible training class as ar
ranged last year , under the leadership of the
most able man obtainable In the city. The
Current Topic club , of course , will be con

c-uple had traveled the mountains for three
wccl < s , they came back lo Omaha , after
which Koss got on a roaring old drunk ,
Hiding up In a residence down on the row.
After sobering up he started In to take an
icroilnt of hi3 finances and discovered that
he had but $100 , the rest of the money and
the proceeds of the bank account having
gone glimmering. It was then that he re
ported the case to tbe police , claiming that
he must have been robbed of $700 , If not
more.
Hoss. went back to Lincoln to tell several
fairy tales concerning his whereabouts , while
the detectives went out on the blind trail ,
shadowing numerous parties , but not a par
ticle of evidence did they eectiro against any
party. Finally , they found a doctor who
was a friend of Hos& and this gentleman
told the officers that he had $700 of the
money which belonged to lioss. He had
taken It from him nhen lie was on the
drunk and had afterwards deposited It In
one ol the banks , subsequently sending the
man a check for the full amount. There
the case Avas dropped , and yesterday Chief
Huze received a letter from Hess , telling
him that he could call off his sleuths , as he
, had decided not to prosecute the Investiga
tion any further.
It Is a thousand pities that Mra. Potter
did not begin ilicr , engagement with "In
Society" at Hoyd'd Instead of the "Iron
master , " which at boat \a \ a drama of limited
scope. "In Society , " however , was given Its
premiere before an Omaha audience last night ,
and the verdict wa quite In favor cl the
stars and tlialr supporting company The
play Is by Alexander Dumas , ills , Englished
from "Frnncllllon , " uhlch was so Immensely
successful a few years back. It Js a story
ot today , with a decided leaning { owards
the eroticism that so completely seems to
have takoti hold of the English and French
stage. Iff the" exclusion of. the homller virtues
that were so Integral a part ot thodrama
during the'iflrst half of the cpntiiry , While'
there is1 a'-decTdtll ' moraMn the. story , brightly
nnJ verj- cleverly told , It Is , doubtful If It ,
avails muclieiln the questionable shapd' , In
which It Is prft. at the sacrifice almcel of
teachings > ivhlch have stood for all that Is
beatiln the- social world front tlle 'aforetl'ine.
The' dialogue Is terse , very often epigram
matic , and suggestive of "Lady Winder-
mere's Fan , " which It more nearly resem
bles In motif and manner of working out
than any of the fin de selcle plays which treat
of the marriage question and the rights ot
husband and wife In a bold and uncompro
mising manner.
. As the faithful wlfo , who In aa unguarded
moment almost brings the house of do
Illverolles toppling about lior head , Mrs. Pot
ter Is clearly at her best. She is required to
play a society woman of Ihe best family and
she plays Mrs. Potter. There Is no denying
that the woman with the Titian hair can
play a society woman to perfection. While
she lacks the power to make her audiences
forget that she Is acting. Mrs Potter last
night was never commonplace , her French
accent and her Introduction of French
phrases being the only blemish upon an other
wise creditable performance Yet this should
not be considered a draw back , for U Is an In
terpretation of the character ot Franclne ,
and as such must be seriously treated.
Mr. Hellew was In splendid form and his
Luclen deserved to be classed among the
very best things that he has done. He
was grace and polish Itself , and his bit of
pantomime in the second act , when his wife
tells htm that she has been untrue to him ,
was one ot the features of the performance.
Asa whole the company was excellent.
Mason Mitchell , as. Henri , has a part which
lilted him like a glove , and his little love
scene with Annette ( Pcrdlta Hudspeth ) he
placed splendidly , as did the young lady.
Miss Lisle Leigh showed a line contrast be
tween the AthenaMs of Thursday night and
the baroness of last night , a very pretty
character , somewhat unreal , probably , but
nevertheless In every sense refined , a
woman of the world , but one with a heart
in the right place. Miss Leigh showed her
self a caieful , Intelligent player , and gave
promise of much brighter things In the
luture.
Mr. Itolleston's Stanislas nnd the Mar
quis of Vcrner Cjargcs showed many ex
cellent points. On the whole the performance
was creditable and a pleasant aftermath to
the "Ironmaster. "
Today the Potter-Bellow company will
close Us engagement at Uoyd's theater by
giving two performances a matinee at 2:30 :
this afternoon , wliau the twin stars will ap
pear In "Camllle " The engagement will
close with the evening performance of the
new play "Charlotte Corday. " These will
bo the last opportunities our play-goers will
ha\o of seeing tliowa artists.
