THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : SATURDAY , SEPTEMBEK 1 , 1801. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Good Buying Qavo tbe Wheat Matkot a Steady Tone , SHORTS BID SEPTEMBER CORN UP There \Vnfi a iloml llciimml Iroiu r.lrtulnr . Men During Uio Advance Till * ( .tuna of I'nruliiMvrtVmun I Imporlniit 1'iiclor. CHICAGO , Aug. 31. Guctl buying and re ports of heavy buying for export gave the wheat murkel a steady tone loday ami De cember closed with a gain of ' ,4c. September corn was bid up by shells , closing lc higher. September oats finished Me higher and provisions closed with moderate gains. The wheat market was a shade easier at the opening than It closed yesterday after noon , but very quickly it turned In the other' direction and advanced * , ic over the lowest price made at the moment of opening. There was a good demand from elevator men for September during the advance , nml , In fact , the rise was due principally to that class of buying , Armour & Co.'s brokers were the most conspicuous bidders for September dur ing the advance referred to nnd they were not at that time selling nny December against their purchases , Later , when the rise stopped with a gain so Immaterial , Armour & Co. commenced to sell. The northwestern re ceipts were heavy , numbering S07 care at Minneapolis and Duluth. The opening price of December was &G4e , and , after advancing to 5'Vie , It got back again to the opening figures and 06c was the trading price again about 11:30 : o'clock. Closing cables Indicated nome further Improvement In the- foreign market and there was a good demand re ported from abroad for spring wheat. Towards the close prices rose ugaln to a * point higher than had previously been readied. December sold up to 67c and closed with sellers at 57Uc. Corn was strong and September was more urgently wanted than any other delivery , although the day's receipts were 411 cars , as compared with yesterday's estimates of 370. The advices from the Interior of this state are to the effect that the week will nee the end of the free deliveries of corn. The bulk of the receipts now being received are from Illinois and are sent to fill sales for Septem ber delivery. The shorts fought the move ment for a short time today , but when It rose to about 6 c. from aroundX2c at the open ing , some of the shorts became satisfied that discretion' ' was the better part of valor and began to buy. The market costly rose an other vie on that extra demand. September was not so easy to buy and rose from 55c , near the opening , to CG'/ic about half an hour from the close. Dullness was brisk In twenty-minute spots and dull for the greater part of the time. The situation , as regards the September shorts , became more distressIng - Ing as the session nearcd Us close , and G7o was paid for some , with Sfic the current price In the end. May closed at Its highest point for the day and week , B3c. Cash oats were wonted , and , as a good supply was to be had , a fair business was transacted. Values on all varieties were up a trllle. The speculative crowd was .equally as active. Influenced by higher cash prices , the strength In corn and continued good buying orders from { he country. September sold from 2'jyic to 30c , where It closed. Provisions were again firm until near the. close , when there was. some rcallzlnc by September longs inpork , and a lessening of the buying pressure from shorts In tljat article and In. September ribs. The January deliveries were wanted to fill orders from out side and they closed strong , but , as a rule , at some reduction from the highest prices of the day. Compared with yesterday's close , prices for September , the following changes nre noted : Pork , 7Vtc lower ; lard , lOc , and ribs , 2'/.c higher. In January deliveries the following changes are noted : Pork , lOc ; lard , I2'/4o ; and ribs. TAc higher. The leading futures rung d as follows : Articles. I Open , | lllgll. | I.OW. | ClOBO. Share speculation : oday was unsettled In tone , nnd , na a result of the transactions on the Stock exchange , 3rlcca are pretty evenly divided between declines and advances , the preponderance , If ar.y , being toward the weak side of the mar- < ct. The London buying movement , which was quite pronounced yettcrday , was not well sustained and there wasi oven some selling for : he foreign account , chiefly In Louisville & S'nshvllle , nltliough American securities were strong on the London Stock exchange. There \vero no particularly depressed Influences at work nnd no great pressure to sell , except In Sugar , which was offered down on renewed reports that the now eugar schedule was worded so as to permit of the entry of re fined sugars nt lowe > rates than the trust anticipated. A notable Incident of the day was the decline In Hock Island to a point lielow the current prices of St. Paul , which IIHS not occurred before for many years and which Is to be attributed to President Cable's declaration regarding the uninviting pros pects of the company for the coming year. ICock Island touched Cue during the after noon , a break of 1 % per cent from yester day's closing , while St. Piutl did not go below cr > U. fluctuating between that figure and C"I"B , and closing at the lowest of the day , % per cent below yesterday. Rock Island rallied % per cent at the close , showing a loss of % per cent on the day. Sugar opened ' / per cent higher , rjulckly lost the Improvement , rallied ' , ' per cent , to 107 % . and then moved downward steadily 2 % per cent , to 104i , closing at that price und mak ing a loss of 1-li per cent on last night's figures. The preferred stock recorded a de cline of ' ,6 per cent. The trading In the rest of the list was light , the transactions In no case exceeding 9,500 shares In any slock. The speculation wasi strong for the first half hour , weak during the following thirty minutes , then took an upward turn , which lasted fnr but a brief period and long before noon tPe ( market was again on the downward move. The depression continued until nearly 2 o'clock , when the covering of short con tracts caused a rally , and the final dealings were generally firm. In the bond market the trading was fairly adtlve , the sales aggregat ing $1,612,000. The market was generally fair , The Evening Post's London cablegram says : There was n bullish feeling everywhere today , but actual dealings were chiefly confined to South American securities , which were very strong. American rails showed n further Improvement , closing % per cent under the best. The rise InT-outh Americans Indicated a very favorable speculative outlook here. Mercantile difficulties In the jute trade re ported from Dundee ore reported very serious. The receipts totlny were 4,700 cattle and 7,000 hogs , against 4S30 cattle , 0-IGO hogs and C75 sheep yesterday , nnd 1C7C cattle , 6,442 hogs and 00 sheep on Friday of last week. For the week thus far the receipts amount to 19,257 cattle. 3..39I hogs and 1,280 sheep , ns against 10,130 cattle , 35,212 , hogs and 3,123 sheep for the same days of last week. From this It will bo noted that thcro h.is been n heavy gain during the week In cattle , but a slight fallIng - Ing off In the hog receipts. CATTLE The receipts of cattle today were about the same In number as yesterday , but almost three times as large as the ruti on Friday of last week. Out of the number received fifteen loads were consigned direct to the packers from Kansas City. Thcro were no very good corn-fed cattle , the mar ket being as bar ? In that respect ns has been the rule during the past few days , There was p. demand for a few good cattle anil the market on anything really desirable was fully steady. The market on cow stuff was very slow and lower. The offerings were large , It being estimated that there was as high n eighty cars In the yards. With so much to select from the buyers were Inclined to be rather particular and were In no great hurry to fill ! tliler orders. The supply of stockers nml feeders was hardly so large as on yesterday , but there was enough lo fu'.ly satisfy the demand. The market was rather slow and easier. The extent of the demand for stock cattle Is a surprise to most deal ers. It was expected that the short corn crop would cut off the demand for stockers and feeders , but , on the contrary , In some sections It appears lo have stimulated the demand. A great many farmers ara buying stock cattle to put In their stalk fields. The books of the Stock Yards company show that there were more stackers and feedsrs shipped Into the C9untry In July than there was In July a year ago. While the figures for 'tho prisent month are not complete , It looks as If there would be some gain over August of last year. Representative sales : DKttSSKI ) 1IKUK. No. Av. Tr. No. Av. IT. Av. Sheriff Drexel left for Prlmghar. la. , yes terday after the negro who Is Buppoacd to bo Joe Williams , the notorious poisoner for whom the Omaha police have liccn looklpR for two years past. Information has been received at the sheriff's ofllco which leaves no reasonable doubt In their minds but that the Prlmghar suspect Is really the much- wanted Joo. The crime with which Williams IB charged was commltttcd December 28 , 1S92. Wil liams was on terms of Intimacy with a fam ily named Kulng In the northern part of the city , and had sustained criminal relations with the daughters of Ewlng. On this ac count Borne feeling was engendered , and when It was found that poison had been put In the coffee drank by the family on the morning named , Williams was suspected of beliiR the culprit. Albert Ewlng , the young est chlltl , dlnl on the same day from the effects of the drug , and as the evidence of Williams' guilt became conclusive , he disap peared , and since thfii lias eluded all at tempts at capture. The Omaha police have never made such u determined effort to get hold of any single criminal as they have to lay hands on thi ? negro poisoner , and a dozen wgrojs have been nrrcttert at various points on suspicion , only to lie discharged , as It appeared that none of them was the right man. man.The present suspect was arrested by the Prlmghar authorities for assaulting a railroad conductor. In company with another negro he was stealing a ride , vvlicn the conductor trlid to put them off. They botfi pitched onto the official and gave him a terrible beat- Ing. Me was suspected of being the Omaha criminal , und was eo thoroughly Identified In various ways that Sheriff Drexel ls satisfied that lie Is the right man. The sheriff Is accompanied by a colored man who was well acquainted with tutt prisoner. In order to make the 'identification complete.
