NEW YOItK , AIIR. 28. Alter yesterday's exciting day on the Slock exchange Iho speculation was tame Indeed by comparison. From Die opening until about 1:30 : , and with scarcely a rally , prices tended down. Then came a period of dullness , during which only tlio specialties made any material move ment , and these also sought a lower range oC values , Speculation closed barely steady , the final sales showing losses on the day of \i to l'i per cent In the general llet. exceptions being St. Paul preferred , Dela ware & Hudson , Louisville & Wheeling and Lake Erie , which recorded advances of > per cent each. Distilling was tiRaln the leader of the market In. point of activity , but the transactions therein were less than a third of yesterday's sales. There was heavy selling In the sh.ircs at thu open ing , which came from holders who hoped up to the last moment that the trust would be able to make Us loan nnd take Its spirits out of bond. The failure of this project did not , however , cause any serious stam pede , and the lowest figure to which -the stock fell was 1S ! { , only 1V& | icr cent below yesterdty's closing , and only y , per cent lower than the bottom price of yesterday. The low price was reached shortly niter the opening , hut beforu noon n recovery had been inado to 1UU. During the after noon the greater decline wns to IS , , from which there was a rally of H per cent , the closing quotation being % per cent off from yesterdiy's last sale. Sugar was tUalt In irregularly , n fluctuation with narrow limits during the morning being felt , but being sold more freely In the afternoon , closing at the lowest of the day at a decline of l',4 per cent. A fairly good business was done In the grangers , Si. Paul being sold by Lon don , as well as by the traders. Some good sized lots of Iturllngton were placed on the market by a Boston house to realize profits. There was also some slight liquidation In Hock Island , with the result of losses of I per cent In St. Paul and rtnrllnnton and I'.i per cent In Hock Island. Northwestern on moderat sales fell off ' , per cent. Pull man broke 1 % per cent on sales of 200 shares , nnd Manhattan I'/i per cent on sales of COO shares. The bond market was generally weak nil Jay , In sympathy vlllt the slock market , hut some shares sold at an advance at the close. The Evening Post says : Distilling certifi cates went down to yesterday's lowest flg- tires , then moved Irregularly up. It long ago became Impossible to discuss with seriousness the movement of this concern. At present Wall street is merely divided in opinion as tn whether the trust's "insiders" have accomplished all they e.\pectcd In the money market , and are preparing some new trap for simple speculators. The Evening Post't London cable says : The attendance of brokers was confined today to thu fcptllenunt. Money was easy. Contnn- goca on Americans were 2 to 2 < fc. There was a further material rise In , South Americans. American railroad slocks were low , closing at the lowest. Grand Trunks were exceptionally strong. Sliver was firm nt a decline. Yesterday's sharp rise w.ts due lo a special mintage order for the colonies. Gold Is going In small amount * to the con tinent , but nothing like a drain Is expected. There was a bunch of extra good rangu steers and as high r.s (3.15 was paid for some Wyoming Texas sleers. The demand was good and the packers were not long Iti Idcklng up the bulk of the offerings. It wus upon the whole a good , strong tind fairly active market. There was more butcher stuck In the yards , such ns cous , heifers , etc. , than there has been for some days. Owing to the larger re ceipts the market on the better grades of cows was a little weak , but the lower grades , such as canners , were about steady. There were some right good western cows In the yards and as high us $3.35 was paid for one bunch. There has been u larg ? percentage of sunshine , although tin1 sun has been partly obscured during the last half of the week by a smoky linxc. The rainfall has been everywhere below the normal , and over a considerable nren no rain lias fallen or only a trace. The largest reported was six-tenths of an Inch a l 1'ranklln. Pastures are everywhere very dry and in most sections stock has to be fed. In n few localities where rains have fallen some plowing and seeding are In progress , but generally the condition of the ground Is such as tn make It Impossible. Taken all In all this Is the most severe drouth that has been experienced In the state- since the Nebraska weather service was organized In 1877 , and probably for a consldcrabln period longer. Wells are un usually law and many streams dried up. The weather of the next month can have but little effect In changing crop conditions In the state , and II has accordingly seemed best to close our series of weekly crop bul letins for ISO ! with this Issue , nnd we take this opportunity to express sincere thanks to our correspondents for their assistance and co-operation during the reason. It is thought that owing to the In creased acreage this season th.re will be as much corn as last year. Many fields arc re ported past recovery and In sonic parts of 1'orry and Monroe counties it Is telng cut for fodder. The corn on the bottoms Is still In good condition , and tml-'ss injured by frostwill yield well , llroom corn harvest Is still progressing1 and the yield re ported good and ot an average quality. Owing to the recent rains the ground Is In falily good condition and plowing Is being pushed , and In some sections some se.'dlng has already been done. In many sections of tlie state this work Is still retarded by the unfavorable condition of the ground. Threshing is about completed.
