however , came reports of a hitch In the
loan negotiations , and on the announcement
by Itussel Sago tint they had fallen through
a break to W e was made. The trust people

IN BAD CONDITION.
An Examination Slmws tlie Blxleeutli btrpet
Vluduct to Ho Uniafe ,
The condition ot the Sixteenth street
viaduct Indicates that the proctsa ol re
juvenation wan begun none too BOOH and the
only wonder In the minds of those who have
examined It is that It has not tumbled down
long ago. The continued dry weather , which
Is playing such havoc with the wooden pave
ments , produces an equal effect on the worm-
eaten timbers of the viaduct. The combined
Influence of time and hot luns have reductd
some of the timbers to about the conaUUncy
of punk , but through some Interposition of
fortune the debilitated structure has managed
to hang together.
Chairman Wlnspear of the Board of Public
Works mode an examination of the viaduct
yesterday and found that the planhtnH vva
so rotten that It would not hold the spikes
with which the roils of the street railway
company vvere fastened. Numerous c lls
were found whlcn vvere held In place by onlv
two or three spikes for the entire length ot
the rail , The timbers underneath wera ap
parently so rotten that It the rails thus In
securely fastened should spread a little so
that the wheels should be aliened to etrlk *
