corn canted the strength In these markets
and oats followed. Wheat closed with a
Kaln of l'/4c ' for September. Corn closed lo
higher and oats gilntil He. I'rovlslons flu-

Wheat wag quite iictlvo within the cslnb
llshed range of lc. The feeling displayed
was etroneer. Initial transactions were at
n Uo to Uc decline , at G.1c for September ,
end gradually advanced from % c to Ic , cased
off Vic , rallied Ic , changed some , held steady
and closed with September ut 65'Ac. ' The
easier opening was duo to Rome extent to
the action of corn , which opened oft several
fractions , due to the large receipts of i,113
cars. New York , however , was ( Inner and
there was a decrease on ocean passage , which
counteracted the weaker tone , and , on free
buying by the local crowd , the price advanced
nnd was further helped later by the In-
crcas ? In the vUlble supply being smaller
than expected and the free acceptance. ? by
the continent of offers from this side. Ca
bles came In stronger and contitirntal advlcei
were "bullish" In ton : , which helped advance
prices. The weather In France was reported

moderately sharp upturn In corn also aided
the upward tendency. New York was a
iood ; buyer and the shorts , who sold freely
Saturday , covered on the upturn today.
Corn was weak nt the start , but soon
firmed up. Local players were covering
shorts and did not find sellers as plentiful as
they expected. The country sent some more
buying orders and both classes of buying
were In active competition at times for very
limited offerings. Crop reports were gen
erally as bad and In some cases were worao
than before. There was an active demand In
the cash crowd for tbe earliest offerings to
KO to store atJc per Imshel over the Sep
tember price for No. 2 yellow and at Septem
ber price for regular No. 2. September sold
nt the opening at from G2c down to 62Vic.
It rose to G-tV&c and closed at 53c. May

The activity In the oats market did not
amount to very much , but during the session
quite a good business was transacted. Even
with a decrease In the visible supply of
cats of 1,789,000 bu. , the market ruled
firmer , Influenced by corn. September opnecl
Uo lower than It closed on Saturday , nt
29 0 , sold right up to 30c and closed nt
30V6c bid.
There was n fair amount of trade done In
the provision pit , but prices were higher
from the start , differing In that respect from
the grain markets. The markets stiffened
ns the session progressed. The hog receipts
were only SI,000 today , Instead of 31,000 , as
had been estimated , and only 1G.OOO head Is
tJtlmnted for tomorrow. January pork found
buyers at the opening nt J13.4G , ns ngalnst
$13.40 nt the close of Saturday , and ad
vanced to nnd closed nt $13.60. Lard Is lOc
higher than at the end of Saturday's ses-

the new tariff bill ns passed are being dis
covered. It was said today at the custom

playing cards and so If It becomes a law
nothing can be sold without a revenue stump.

Today's receipts consisted of about 2.20C
cattle , 3,800 hogs and 1,730 sheep , as agalns
1,000 cuttle nnd 0,100 hogs on Monday o
last week.
H will be noted that the receipts of hog
were the lightest for any day In a lorii
time. The cattle , as will bo noted from tin
representative sales , Were made up largcl >
of westerns , which are coining forward quite
rapidly at the present time.
CATTL.K There wcrc not many good
native beef steers on the market today , bill
theie was quite a showing of western steers
The weaker markets In the east nnd large
supplies had a naturally depressing effect
upon the TTiarket here and the trade was slou
at a decline , amounting In many cases to
lOc. A good deal of the advance made It
the market last week was lost today. There
were no native cattle good enough to brltif ,
$4 and the highest price paid was $3.90
The market on butchers' stock was also lower
on the more common grades , though the best
cows and heifers brought close to Saturday's
prices. The market on stockers nnd feeders
did not show any material change. The re
ceipts are not very large and the demand Is
limited. The general trade Is slow at very

HOGS Not only were the receipts of hogs
light , but the quality was poor. The ship
ping demand was light and advices from
eastern markets unfavorable , which made the
general trade slow. As to prices , the market
was all of 5c lower and In some cases lOc
lower. At the close the feeling was better
and the market a little stronger than at the
opening. The bulk of the sales were made
at J4/JO to $5.10 , against 14.90 to { 5.15 on
