CHICAGO , Aug. 1C. The grain markets
Were strong nt the atari and weak nt the
finish today. Deafish news was In the ma
jority In wheat and frco realizing oftcctcd
corn. September wheat closed % c lower , at
G5c , and Scptomhcr corn Vic lower , at
CG' c. Boiitembcr oats finished lie higher
and provisions closed nt n decline.
Wheat wns moderately active. The feel
ing was rather mixed , ruling strong early
nnd weaker later , the closing being easy.
First trades wore at from \4c \ to % c ad
vance , hut gradually worked down from Tic
to Ic , ralliedJc , changed FOIHO ,
nnd closed as stated. The trade
bought freely at the start on the
theory that corn was going to advance
sharply , though the higher cables and higher
opening nt Now York helped to strengthen
the situation. The weather In New Knglaml
was reported as unsettled , and this was a
minor factor. At the advance there was free
realizing , several of the largo commission
houses splllni ; liberally , which caused n
weak feeling to set In , and , In absence of any
outside support , the prlco steadily declined.
The largo arrivals at primary markets , light
clearances nnd falling off In the export busi
ness In the cast were Influences which aided
the reaction. The trade evidently overbought
nt the start and at the first show of weakness
holders hastened to sell out , which created a
sharp break. The export clearances of wheat
nnd flour aggregated 318,000 bu. , of which
only 7C.OOO bu. was In flour. Nw York re
ported thirty-five boat loads taken for ex
port nnd there wns quito a llttlo demand for
cash wheat here.
Corn continued to rule active , nervous
nnd unsettled , being subject to frequent ups
nnd downs. A good trade was witnessed and
the feeling prevalent was on the whole easier.
There was not n great deal of corn for sale
at the start , while iiutto an urgent demand
prevailed , nnd It was some time before the
call was satisfied , when offerings Increased
and prices sagged back , but again rallied.
The country bought to a moderate extent
today , the Felling as usual coming from
local professionals and longs , who purchased
earlier In the week and today took their
profits.
The principal bullish Influence was the
variously weekly crop bulletins , which
were Generally much worse thnn the trade
had looked for , and most of the reports con
ceded that the rains had come too late In
many places to do much If any good to corn.
The Washington forecast for the next thirty-
six hours Indicated clear nnd fair conditions
through the west. The west bought consldcr-
nble during the first hour and elevator people
sold considerable September. The speculative
market opened with an advance of from % c
to Ic and sold off slightly , advancing % c ,
declined from % c to % c , rallied from % c
to % c , then declined again from Ic to lc ,
changed some and closed as mentioned.
Oats advanced early on the strength In
corn , reacting later and closing firm. The
market was active , with n range for Sep
tember of % c.
Provisions were fairly active , advancing
early with corn nnd better prices for live
hogs. Offerings Increased later and prices
declined. Compared with last night , Septem
ber pork Is 17V4c lower , September lard 2'/6c
higher and September ribs 2c lower.
Freights , corn to Buffalo , Ic , and corn nnd
oats to Port Huron , "ic.
Estimates for Thursday : Wheat , GCC cars ;
corn , 152 cars ; oats , 258 cars ; hogs , 30,000

NB\V YOItK , Aug. 15. The stock market
today was very uneven. London was on both
elites of the market. Speculation was Itss
active than on the preceding days of the
week and the aggregate transactions were
less than yesterday's by some 130,000 shares.
At the opening a heavy tone prevailed , due
mainly to the taking of the profits of the
recent advance , but the Rolling of long flock
was supplemented by the putting of fresh lines
by the short Interest , which has boon largely
Increased by the day's operations. Sugar
rose If per cent at the opening , receded 16
per cent , to 107 , touched IOS',4 before 11
o'clock , reacted to 107 % , moved up to 108 % ,
the best of the day , at about 1:30 : , selling off
to 107 % , closing at lOSU , a gain of 1 per
cent on the day. Distilling was cold heavily
on reports that the company was endeavoring
to negotiate n loan of $5.000,000 with which
to take Its whisky out of bond , and that
It was meeting with diniculty In raising the
money. Semt-olllclal denials of the story
were made , but the stock declined steadily ,
touching 20 > 4 , the lowest price of the day ,
shortly after 2 o'clock , being a break of 2 %
per cent from yesterday's final sale. In the
later dealings purchases to ? over short con
tracts caused a rally of % per cent , making
the net loss 1 % per cent. Burlington was
sold by Ilpston and the west on a. renewal
of the rumors touching the scaling of the
next dividend , receding 1 per cent , with a
final rally of 'A per cent. Rock Island closed
at the lowest of the day , making a loss of %
per cent from yesterday , but off 1 % per cent
from the top figures of the morning , when
there was an advance of 1 per cent from the
opening on the announcement said to have
come tram President Cable that the regular
dividend would bo declared next month.
Louisville &Nushvlllo Is down 1 % per cent
and Kansas & Texas ) U up ! ' , { per cent.
The bond list was strong and active.
The Evening Post's London cablegram
says : The stock markets were quieter today
and experienced a healthy reaction after
the recent sharp rise. Americans opened
firm und then gave way on realizations , clos
ing In the last hours at the lowest point.
After hours there was renewed activity and
an advance , Louisville & Nashville leading.
The tone Is still bullish. South Americans
continue very strong. China Is buying. The
present prices apply four weeks ahead. The
Indian council sold 40 lakhs today at a trac
tion over 13d.
The Evening Post says : The course of the
market was Irregular , showing strength In
spots and a disposition to rally whenever
the selling pressure was removed. Sugar led
In point of activity. It was sharply attacked
In the early hours , but received good support ,
and there was more buying than selling dur
ing the day. There was a tendency on the
part of the grangers to respond to better
crop news , and , In quarters where the soiling
pressure was not exerted , considerable
strength was exhibited.

WEDNESDAY , Aug. 15.
Today's receipts footed up about 1,900 cat
tle , 12,000 hogs and 415 sheep , ns against
2,000 cattle , 10. GOO hogs and 800 sheep on
yesterday , and 2.SOO cattle , 14,800 hogs anil
$50 sheep on Wednesday of last week. For
the first three day * of this week the re
ceipts nro C.OOO cuttle , 29,600 hogs and 1,200
sheep , as against 7,000 Battle , 36,800 hogs and
2,700 sheep on the corresponding days of
last week. This comparison shows that there
has been a falling off In the arrivals of all
kinds of stock the present week as compared
with last week. In the case of cattle and
sheep the decrease Is not very large , but
with hogs It amounts to over 7,000 head.
CATTLE Out of the moderate receipts
there were n few loads of very fair corn fed
steers , but the offerings were not large.
There was a good demand for a few cattle ,
but the orders were all small , and at the
close there were still some quite desirable
cattle unsold. The market did not show
much change from yesterday , so far as prices
were concerned. One bunch of 1,250-lb. steers
brought { 4.25 and another bunch weighing
a few pounds more , brought the same price.
The bulk of the sales were under $1. There
was quite a llttlo demand for butchers' stock
and the market of desirable cows and heifers
was fully steady and perhaps a little stronger.
The tendency of the market 'on this class
of stock has been upward the past weak and
sales arc being made at considerably better
figures than last week. With a moderate
supply of stockers and feeders the market
appeared to have a little more life and prices
seemed fully steady to strong. The better
grades sold quite largely at $2.25 to $2.50
and from that down to the low point at which
the more common grades are selling. Rep
resentative sales :

HOGS There was a good demand this
morning for fair to choice loads of hogs and
the market on such was active at an advance
of fully Be. The local packers were liberal
buyers again and that caused an Improve
ment In the demand for the more common
mixed loads and the market was even better
on those. The offerings were taken quite
readily at the advance and a fair clearance
was made early In the day. The best loads
sold largely at $5.05 to $5.35 A week ago
the bulk of the hogs sold at $4.70 to $5. Rep
